I just did this for the first time yesterday in Laguna. My darkest filter is a ND64. Had to wait until golden hour, but got some great pics. Great video.

Yes exactly you will have to shoot early or late with those lighter NDs

Great explanation and demonstration. Love the final shots. Try the Polar Pro ND filter app to easily figure out the filter type needed for current conditions.

Wow, Awesome, My M2P arrived two days ago, getting everything ready for the first flight, I just bought the polar Pro ND8 ND16 ND32. I love long exposure, and that was my main reason buying the M2P. Really digging the adjustable aperture. I have learned so much from your videos. I got into this about 3-4 years ago and got serious 2 years ago. I own a home inspection company in San Diego and use drones for the roofs and other areas I cant see. I've been giving more and more free services like 360 of each room so the buyers have a better idea of decorating and get more excited about their new home. Also, with the drone I look for balance and composition on every shot. Between you and the paid Lynda.com paid courses, it's been a huge passion. Going to New York in a couple of weeks got my waivers set, now drone shots in NYC and Long Island. . Your book is great by the way.... thanks or all you provide/

Great video thanks for sharing. Good instruction and tips. Imagine getting longer exposures in the evening (eg. 8 or 10 secs) with the ND1000. Maybe some traffic shots from above with light streams. I guess with the variable aperture now it opens up a whole new range of photo options, which is fantastic.

wow that is very cool! But i have a question if anyone can answer. In photography you usually adjust aperture depending on how out of focus the background is going to be. Why is it that on the drone you have to stay under 5 aperture for it to be sharpest? wouldnt higher mean everything is more sharper? Lower aperture in photography means background is blurred out. Would imagine it would be the same here.

How does the mavic keep the camera absolutely still in the air? For long exposure you always need a tripod and a remote trigger even.....

This was handy to watch as practicing with night time videos at the moment and at my first test all the dark areas were really grainy and not very sharp. Do I need slightly slower shutter speed to get darker darks with less noise?

Check to see what your iso is, ideally you want your iso to be 100... the lower the iso value the less grainy your picture/ video will be

Have a quick question since I love long exposures too. I´ve bought the ND 1000 from another brand and want to start experimenting. The question is: do you end up with a lot of blurry images since it´s long exposure a little movement will register as well? What´s the shutter speed you feel comfortable with after you find many blurred images.

Lastly, can you send me some pictures of unedited photo using nd 1000 before i buy. Thanks

@Vlaakster
@Vlaakster 5 лет назад
Really great video! I want to get a set of these for my M2P so I can do some slower shutter speed stuff. It looks from your video that the color cast isn't bad either. One question, why is it that when you held the ND 1000 in front of the camera, making the exposure speed 1 second, that the video of the surf looked normal (I'd think a 1s shutter would result in a slide show effect in video with that filter on). Does the drone raise the ISO for video transmission to keep the video smooth and then lower it back to your setting when you take a photograph?
@pj.pavadore
@pj.pavadore 3 года назад
Hello! I love your work, and I love long exposure photography. I've found that with my Mavic 2 Pro and an ND1000, I can slow the shutter down quite substantially. Question, do you find that an unexpected gust or a slightly breezy day adds unwanted motion blur to stationary things (i.e. rocks)?
@donhorhestv
@donhorhestv 5 лет назад
Does it affect when you are in manual focus or you will use auto focus when taking long exposure?

U can u auto and then half press to focus.

No need to "try out" the various filters. Simply count the stops between 1/640 and 1 second. That's turns out to be between 9 and 10 stops. The ND 1000 is 10 stops.

@hans2504
@hans2504 3 года назад
Hi, Just wondering, do you have experience with faking long exposure photos by doing a burst of photos and then use Photoshop to create an average of the set? This way you might not need ND filters at all. Hope it's correct and possible (didn't tried it out yet)

I’m not too sure how practical it would be to do an exposure longer than 1second as any slight movement of the drone will cause a blurry photo.

Do you find that your Mavic 2 has problems calibrating the gimbal at startup if it has a polarized filter installed? Mine is OK with regular ND filters but the heavier polarized ones make the gimbal drop and stare at the ground if it is on at startup. After startup I can change to a polarized and it is fine but no luck otherwise.

Do you have to use a filter to be able to shoot Long Exposure with this drone?
@FlytPath
@FlytPath 5 лет назад
Cétan Hamilton Sr. The goal is get to a 1-2 second exposure. So you need to switch to manual and dial in your settings to shutter speed 1 sec, iso 100 and adjust fstop. If u can’t achieve those settings, use must use nd filters to get there

I'm shocked that the Mavic can hover THAT still for a 1 second exposure. With SLR photography you're on a tripod and not touching it while the shutter is open. What's your experience with motion blur from drone movement - what would be the shutter speed (slow) limit?
@FlytPath
@FlytPath 4 года назад
It really depends on how far or close you are to the subject. Longer exposures are doable when further away.
@mohamedalsawaialsawai9883
@mohamedalsawaialsawai9883 5 лет назад
So ND 1000 makes a picture sharper
@FlytPath
@FlytPath 5 лет назад
A dark neutral density filter like the ND1000 allows you to slow you shutter speed down significantly. Thus allowing you to do long exposure photography.
@davejackson8303

I am a DSLR shooter getting into drone photography. The part I can understand is how come the rocks (in example you showed) are sharp? I just can’t comprehend it since the slightest movement should make everything blurry...
