Off hand is without a doubt the hardest and most inconsistent position to shoot from. In this video we offer some tips from proper stance to what magnification to have your optic set to.

In Finland this is the way for 80% of the elk hunting scenarios as dogs are chasing the animal for hunters.

Where’s the sling..??…?? Where’s the sling?? You’re not teaching people to use a fling..military style..to quickie aid in stabilizing your rifle. And what’s with all the elk talk?? More. Why the can? Why are you using a can on a hunting rifle? You’re promoting elk shooting but you’re sporting a can on that hunting rifle? Why? In all my hunting days and all of the animals I’ve taken plus several elk…when touching off a round hunting..I’ve never paid attention to rifle report. Report is just not a factor dude!! It’s not! Plus have you “Really” hunted elk? Busting through oak brush or through snow slide areas accessing vantage points? I have and I’ll tell you straight up that even 24” magnum barrrl length rifles will hang up in brush etc and rip at you. Let alone sporting another 6” added because of a can??? I question your experience man. A military style sling whether leather or nylon webbing is vital..extremely vital in off hand shooting. Yes..timing is crucial for shot placement…but what about having/explaining triggers that break cleanly but still have that 3-4lb trigger break for safety sake!! I dunno…your advice is very sketchy at best and honestly not very well informative. Off hand shooting in western terrain happens…but in all my days it’s happen very seldom and usually shooting opportunities on animals allows me to get into a sitting position while utilizing my sling as added stability to shoot ethically. Cleanly. Snd only a very very few times have I ever taken a shot without the aid of my sling. Yes I’m preaching to you. Because I’ve hunted for 50 years and taken a cab lot ..a lot of animals…except a billy goat..too tough and rough even for me in my prime.

Most excellent video and covers the basics really fast. I learned about this by dry firing off-hand at home. I hunt on public land. So, I could be walking over a small rise and there is a game animal (whitetail) within sight. While hunting on public land, I carry the rifle across my arms just for this scenario. So, now there is a buck and not enough time set up the tripod, etc. I need to shoulder and shoot. The thing I learned is that, with off-hand, there will be wavering. You had to allow small circles and use timing. But this method of starting high is obviously so much better. The rifle is going to drop anyway. Why not let gravity help? And also, because of the waver, I could be 2 MOA, even with a sub MOA rifle. Most definitely, off hand is only good for 100 yards and less. And no head shots, vitals shots only.

Great video on shooting a rifle offhand and standing. I am learning how to shoot with a .22LR rifle out to 25 yards into a 3 inches diameter circle(offhand and standing), when I start my aim, I start right on top of the target and I fire the shot when the rifle comes down. I have tried to start my aim as high as the way you do and as my rifle came down to the target, my aim was all over the place. My explanation is my best aim is at the moment I start aiming and it does not last long before I lose it completely, you definitely can hold the rifle steady longer and therefore you can start your aim higher. I have great success on getting a 3 inch group out to 25 yard for now and I'll progress to stretch the distance out to 50 yards, once I am happy with my accuracy at 50 yards, I'll switch to a bigger caliber rifle.

Great video showing the most important parts of shooting while standing! I just came from Argentina hunting Axis deer. I missed a very nice buck because I attempted to shoot without any support (there was nothing available around to lean on). I will practice all these tips in the range for my next trip.

at 1:32 untrue, they don't lean on the back foot yes you kick your hip forward while standing sideway but you also put weight toward your front foot and no your strong arm elbow does not sag down to the ground, you life that elbow up like the chicken wing that people like to make fun off that ww2 soldiers did. YES YOU CAN HANDLE PRETTY BIG CALIBER WITH THAT STAND. Am 120 pouund 5foot5 and can shoot up to 30-06 standing up hiting 3/8th size target not so much 1/5th size yet. No excuses with a 200lb+ 6 foot tall hunter can handle 300 win mag no problem

Also I may add he said squeeze the trigger where your cross hair end up Where you want to hit by then it’s too late, as you’re coming down or up, you want to anticipate when you cross hair about to cross path with the spot you have picked on the target prior to aiming.

You folks need to shoot offhand with a flintlock cause what your doing won’t work. I thought it was kinda funny actually. Yeah I shoot flintlocks and hunt with them. I also shoot service rifle with an AR and the coat and all that. But a poor stance is a poor stance coat or not. . If you are shooting at a big target, at close range you can get by I guess. I would also point out that the 6x scope is useless. 24 power is a joke and has no place on a hunting rifle. And I used to guide for elk and deer hunting in my younger days. Rushing a shot, offhand or other wise is not a good idea. And I VERY seldom shoot at an animal offhand.

Thanks for your comment. We agree with one thing you said. Offhand, is very rare to shoot at an animal and should only be used at close range. The rest of your comment, not so much. Thanks for watching.

Hi Greg, what do you think about using a hasty sling for the offhand shots? It does help to stabilize the the rifle.

You bet. Everyone has something different than that helps them. If it makes you more steady use it.

I'm trying to shot with both eyes open through a scope. When I try to do it, I see 2 sight pictures. Do you have any tips or suggestions on how to do it ? Thanks
@OutdoorSolutions

Depends on distance and optic type. If it’s a hunting rifle with a minimum magnification of 3 or greater, try closing your other eye. If using a red dot or a 1x optic try adjusting your eye relief. You may be to close or to far from the optic.

If your right handed but left eye dominant or left hand/right eye it will be a thing. Makes shooting pretty much anything with both eyes open difficult. Squint but don’t close the eye that you’re not aiming with and keep the one your aiming with full open. It will force your brain to favor the non dominant eye and it will be one sight picture but you will still be able to see the world through both eyes. One of the best match pistol shooters I know negated the same issue with the above and it’s who I learned it from. Children shoot with one eye closed and also people who don’t like being able to be on target instantly. One eye squint my man. A couple minutes of playing with the idea in your living room will fix the issue and a fair bit of shooting doing it will make it instinctive.
