How To SHORTEN A LONG T-Shirt

One of the most annoying things is finding a shirt that's just straight up TOO LONG! This is especially true for shorter guys. In this video I'm going to show you how you can quickly and easily shorten a shirt at home with a sewing machine.
I got this shirt at Target on clearance like I do a lot of my shirts, but it's SUPER long. You can shorten it with keeping the factory hem, but this shirt needs to be shortened so much that we have to get rid of it. We are taking 7 inches off of this shirt!
The first thing you want to do is iron it down so that it's nice and flat. Next, measure and put a pin one inch from the bottom of your shirt. You're going to put one straight stitch across the bottom, and then a second one right below it a quarter of an inch down.
What was good about this video is there were some problems and mistakes that I made. I didn't properly check my stitch tension, so I ended up with some skipped stitches that made my shirt look bad. These things can happen to you, so make sure you check your settings! All in all, mistakes happen and you're going to mess up. We are all human. Practice and practice some more, and you will MASTER IT!
BTW, to anyone reading this, you guys leave me some awesome comments and send me cool messages on IG and I just wanted to say thank you. As random as it sounds most of the time it puts a smile on my face and makes me feel good, so thank you!

Stick around until the end of the video because you're gonna learn a valuable lesson, check your sewing machine settings. No ones perfect, you're gonna mess up a lot of clothes, and mistakes are gonna happen. That's life, might as well get used to it huh? You need to get yourself a magnetic seam guide! Makes sewing straight lines so much easier. $4.99. And, raise your table with bed risers $10 or so. Much easier on your back and easier to see your stitching. Love your videos, motivating me to alter my tees.

Can you explain why removing more than 3 inches you CAN'T keep the original hem? if the shirt is a true tube and precisely the same width would that be the exception?

Your comment about not having your mom to ask questions and using her machine really struck a chord with me. My mom passed earlier this year, and I've been teaching myself to sew in honor of my mom. She created many pieces of clothing, pillows, quilting, biker pajamas for me, etc. I was so proud of myself for recently fixing a broken patio umbrella rod pocket seam the other day. Finesse didn't matter since no one would see it, but i got it done on my mom's old sewing machine! Thanks for your videos (and Patriotism), I'm looking forward to tailoring some of my potato sack t-shirts.

@@toodlerue Oh THANK YOU! I can see and understand fully after watching the video the difference. In this tshirt I have before me, that twin needle is more likely how this hem was formed. Is has that zig zaggity thing under neath and on top the dual stitches are synced and calming my ocd. No offense to our host, but his technique has me shaking and quivering. I was wondering how the stitches could mirror one another with a single needle the answer is they can't. Do keep in mind, I have no idea how to turn on a sewing machine, how to load or wind a bobbin, nor what thread to use ... so he is leaps and bounds beyond me and my "expertise". I wish I knew how to use a sewing machine. As a slim guy, I am sick of shirts off the rack having way too much fabric with my correct size. I am not into the blousey look. Even "slim fit" shirts usually still have too much. having all my shirts tailored gets too expensive. I wish also manufacturers made shirts with waist sizes, just like pants.

Curt Randall it’s surprisingly easy if you have a good machine. Try the Singer Stylist 7258, toooons of different stitch settings and veeeery user friendly. I’m kind of trying to figure it out on my own and let mistakes happen so I am really learn and see what’s wrong, my first mistake, not ironing before, I was wondering why it came out wonky and wasn’t flat enough. 😬

Ok, so you need to use a stretch stitch for tee shirts, otherwise the thread will eventually break from just putting it on and taking it off. Pull on the original hems of any of your tee shirts, in the direction of the stitch. Then, in the same way, pull on one that you've sewn without a stretch stitch, and you'll see what I mean. Also, there are double needles for your machine that do that stitch a quarter inch apart in one pass. They can be a pain, though. There's also a quarter inch double-sided tape for hemming called "Dritz Wonder Tape". It goes inside the fold of the seam and adheres the fabric together. It really helps to keep the hem in place, and it prevents the fabric from stretching while you're sewing. The tape is not permanent--the adhesive dissolves when you launder your shirt. Finally, a walking foot, instead of a regular presser foot, really helps to advance the top fabric of the hem at the same rate as the lower fabric during sewing. So you see, hemming a tee shirt properly isn't exactly an easy prospect if you don't have some experience sewing. Keep practising, though. That's what sewing is all about. Good luck.
@StylishDTailors
@StylishDTailors 5 лет назад
Thanks for sharing your tips! I sort of agree with you on the stretch needle, but I've sewed dozens of tees with a regular universal needle and haven't had any issues with blown seams or anything like that at all. You obviously want to be careful taking it off and putting it on, but that goes without saying. I also know there are double needles and special presser feet that make jobs like this easier. I like to make my videos for the guy who wants to buy the minimal amount of accessories to go with his machine. Would a double needle make this easier? Absolutely, but it isn't NEEDED though either. One thing I definitely agree with is the fact that yes, sewing gets easier with practice. It's taken me years to get everything down, and as you know mistakes can still happen, but it's life.
@rennzzos788
@rennzzos788 5 лет назад
@@StylishDTailors Stretch stitch, SD, not stretch needle. It's an adjustment on your sewing machine. So, you can make a regular straight stitch a stretch stitch by just turning the dial on your machine. Make sure you do some practice stitches on the scrap tee shirt fabric that you've cut off, so that you can see if the stitch length and thread tension are ok.

Actually SD you shouldn't treat your garments before you sew if you value your machines. Starch and other chemicals will be pushed into your machine with your needles. Same principle as hemming jeans with dirt in the hem. It builds up. You can press before you sew if you want but putting pins in and hemming it and then pressing it is just as good. A lot of times the edge you press rolls and your hem is a little off. And I've taken up original hems as long as 14 inches. It works. Like your vids. 😊

They are all a good weight 6, 8 or 10 ounce pima cotton. And 4 to 7" too long. Really want that factory hem as I am just learning. Most of his Tshirts are the TUBE style. No side seams. @@b.walker5955 Yes you can do the original hem on t shirts any length First measure how much you want to shorten it. Divide that measure in half. As in if the total you want to shorten it is 4” you’re going to use 2” Turn it inside out and make a fold 2” NOT including the original hem. It should be about 1” Pin your hem to the fold making sure your total being folded up isn’t more than 3” because you need 2” folded Sew a seam very close to the original stitches but not on them about an 1/8 of an inch Then trim off your 2” folded fabric to about 1/4 inch Press down your new hem with your excess all pressed up Now sew a seam on top 1/8 inch away from your seam You will have 3 seams showing the two original and your new top stitch but if you match it close to the color it kinda goes away Hope I gave good instructions 😊😊😊 It’s the same principle as in original Jean hems

Hi SD! Loved your stitching videos and I became a big fan and started to watch ALL of them. However, I got two questions that were not answered by watching your videos. Or it could be: you have, but I just missed them. 1, How to downsize T-shirt shoulder to make them fit? 2. How to downsize Jean’s waist? Thank you! Keep the good work.

That was fun to watch. Thanks for your help. I'm 4'11 and ALL my t-shirts are too long. What tension should I put my machine on? I have an old Singer with no fancy stuff on it. It was my grandmothers :)

this is dope! Been binging since i found your channel. Id love to see a video shortening a shirt but keeping that U shape at the bottom. This shirt had a cool shape to the bottom and id love to see how you can make that shape on a shirt. Hope that made sense lol

My new favourite channel! I got a problem though... I watched the hoodie video, and i was planning to fix an anorak with a waterproof zipper from the bottom of the anorak to the armpit on the right side of it. Its made out of ventile cotton and i really do not want to mess it up.. You think its possbible to reattach the zipper after i made the anorak slimmer? It should be as easy as an hoodie other than that zipper on the side of it

You have to use a ballpoint needle when sewing a T-shirt (considered a “knit” fabric, dude!). A standard needle is for woven fabric like cotton used for dress shirts. That’s why the skipped stitches, bro.

Just tried this with one of my shirts and it went well!! At 9:52, you're cutting the excess fabric from the shirt and you're left with an edge of exposed thread. It's not visible when you wear the shirt but does this become a problem after washing and wearing the shirt later? Will it unwind later? In your video on where you hemmed denim pants you fold the excess fabric inside so that the edge isn't exposed.

Man, you cutting off the bottom of that shirt is giving me hives. I look for shirt with that much length. For some reason retailers think chick shirts all need to be crop tops, and I’m like but my food baby!
@StylishDTailors
@StylishDTailors 5 лет назад
Yeah shirts that are that long are definitely in style that's for sure, they're just not for me. I could have gotten away with taking off 5 inches instead of 7 though for sure.

Hear, hear! All the T-shirt upcycling videos for chicks these days are all the same: just chop it off under your bust! ...No. I have a long torso. Regular shirts are already crop tops on me. I need to know how to LENGTHEN my shirts!
