How To: Should I Replace and Upgade My Central A/C Unit?

Are you thinking about upgrading to a newer and higher 16, 18 or 20 SEER rated central air conditioner? I spent a lot of time comparing SEER and EER efficiency ratings and tried to determine how much money I would be saving in my electricity bill. I had such great electrical savings that I had to make a video showing how much you could save by putting in a new high efficiency A/C unit.

That old unit is certainly better built and with better quality heavier components too. Problem is, efficiency back then wasn't even a consideration when they were built. These new units are monumentally more efficient (even the mid eff. models), work better, run quieter and despite the technology, likely at least as reliable as those old ones were when new. At least for their shorter design life. 49 years...wow! My father's gas furnace is 45 yrs old and he won't replace it.

Thanks for the video. I’m about to upgrade my 17 year old seer 13 Goodman to a 18/20seer Trane or American standard variable speed. I’m curios about my savings. I’ll do a video also once I get it done to compare savings.

I researched Goodman, Trane, and RUUD, and you know what not one is superior over the other all have their weakness and strength. For more bang for the buck I went with a Goodman 4 ton (Jan 2017) replacing my 20 year old York 3.5 ton unit. I hired a recommended tech to install my entire system and I couldn't be happier. Last summer my June electric bill was $240 so far with the new Goodman unit my current June bill was only $124 that is a $116 savings.

The temps you're taking are the surface temperatures of the surface you're pointing at, NOT ambient air temperature. Different materials absorb heat, and hold it, at differing rates. If you want to measure the ambient AIR temperature use a meter with a thermocouple attached and clip it to the outside of the cage that surrounds the Condenser coil.

I never thought about it but, when they take away your old unit, which could be full of freon, they can take it back to the shop and empty it into there tanks, and sell it the next day for high dollar, total profit. Next thing to study up on is what should they do when your yearly check up is performed, normally its listed on your maintenance agreement ( hopefully ), make sure the tech does all the things listed, I have found they dont at all. everything listed is important stuff, make darn sure everything gets checked, I find this to be a major problem in the industry. Dont be a nice guy, get your moneys worth, your a/c will thank you. Study up, looks like your good at that. A/C companies are listed number 2 on the BBB rip off list, just under Roofers. Going with a larger company means nothing. Good Luck

We just changed from an older model HVAC low end brand to the Goodman 2 tone HVAC Condenser and evaporator. We have a slab home with foundation and the lines run through a PVC under ground. Original installer rammed the tubes through the pipe and damaged the smaller tube, causing a leak. New installer pulled the tubes through the pipe and made the connections. When evacuated (last procedure before start up) our system went to - 287 millibars of vacuum ( the pump had no more air to pump out and any thing below 1,000 indicates no leaks) our Goodman has a life time warranty on the compressor and all aluminum evaporator so we ought to be good to go for years.

♦️Here is a secret the air conditioner sellers don’t want you to know. Question: Which home air conditioner uses the least amout of electricity? Answer: The one that is off. I live in Northern Wisconsin, USA. A/C unit is 26 years old, no repairs yet. I use the air conditioner less then 30 days a year. Even then, its noirmally only 1/2 a day at a time, so about 350 hours of run time per year. Also, our local utility has restructured their rates such that the fixed portion of the monthly electricity bill is larger and the variable “usage” portions is lower. This new billing structure reduces the energy savings incentive to upgrade to newer, more efficient appliances. Although a new air conditioner unit may be more efficinet, my utilization rate is so low, and variable energy rate so reduced that when I ran the numbers, its not worth updating my air conditioner until the old one fails. By my calculations, payback exceeded 20 years. Now my furnace, which runs about 8 to 9 months a year is another story. I updated my gas furnace about 7 years ago, as I took advantage of a warranted failed heat exchanger. With the discount due to the heat exchanger, the payback was under two years, actually 19 months.

Looks great, sounds great and works great! It was a "family" deal but I have a neighbor currently pricing a 5-ton 16 SEER unit and is getting quotes between $4700 and $7200. It varies by brand and SEER rating. I paid closer to the low end of that spectrum. It's a Goodman which gets a lot of bad reviews...but they have recently overhauled their manufacturing processes, lengthened their warranties, and are working on their public image. Guess we'll see!

Really good content, the point that really drove it home was the savings reflected on your monthly bills. I had my entire HVAC system replaced 2 days ago, I went with a big name brand system (Bryant), 3 speed gas condensing furnace & 2 speed AC. It's too soon for me to realize any energy savings yet but the comfort level running the new vs the old is amazing! My old furnace, vintage 1965, and AC vintage early '90s both added up to crazy high energy bills. Thanks for the video!

Incidentally, you probably know this already, but, in case you don't: It's much better to have a system that's borderline low capacity than one that has too much capacity for the area being air conditioned. The system must dehumidify effectively before it can cool comfortably, If the system is too large, the living space will be cool (cold) and damp, not comfortably cool and dry. It's VERY hard to convince people in subtropical climates of this fact.
@mikename6614
@mikename6614 5 лет назад
Most don't understand, they say bigger and colder but the downside is moving the volume of air. Yep 40 degree air out of the vent is great but it runs a short cycle thus not dehumidifying the volume of air. Remove the humidity and cool not just blast cold air and have a short run cycle, most would be tempted to drop the air down to feel the comfort. I have timed my system on hot days in SC and I can expect 12-15 run cycle and off for 5-7 minutes before the outside heat chases the inside temp back up. So i average about 40 minutes of run cycles per hour in the hot summer months. I replace my 2 updraft filters very often most could take my "used" filters and replace them with theirs I am willing to forgo the $4.88 per filter, not the cheapo green one but the 3M 90 days filters, so I don't run into issues with making the system work harder. My outside coil is cleaner than a dinner plate after a dog licked it and my duct work is sealed and checked, soft ducts and checking for pinches on the braided straps they hang from. It is a great idea to talk to neighbors who have the same system and compare energy bills. My unit is 13 years old, I can go pretty much October thru mid April without using the a/c. I do this by venting with outside lower night temps and closing all windows before I leave for work and come home to a 66 to a max 71 degree temps. If humid I resist and will run the a/c as I don't want to promote moisture or any mold in bathrooms. The most my energy bill in the summer running the a/c is about $180 compared to other neighbors who have a bill of $380 per month total as they don't pay attention to things like what is was before running the a/c so cannot factor in the a/c cost. Doing some research I would say most spend about $3 - $4 a day for running the a/c 24 hours a day. If I spent $6000 grand to replace my system it would take me longer than I would ever remain in the house to even out the cost. Even if I saved $50 a month that is 6 months of running the a/c which is $300 so it would take me 20 years to relieve those replacement cost, even say I saved $70 and my $6000 estimate might be low it would be a very long time. I keep my air set to 74 and don't mess with it, I installed ceiling fans and window treatments that block the sunlight, 3M UV window film on windows that get blasted really hard during the day and caulked and sealed all cracks and leaks. IMO before you start thinking you need to replace I would say keeping the heat from penetrating and getting in the house is a more useful task than trying to fight it with a/c usage. Now if you have really old system that fails and doesn't cool and you don't have the knowledge to fix or repair then replace and live on. Once you educate yourself, I did this also with vehicles at a younger age you will begin to realize these systems and components are not that complicated. I bought a backup capacitor and contacts in case of a breakdown, literally $50 for both parts but to replace by a tech with labor would cost your the flat rate they charge which right of the bat could be $400 for some companies but per hour you could spend $120 to replace the capacitor and the same for the contact. I have R22 and bought 5lbs just in case as well as you will get hosed on how much that cost now, $150 a lb. I spent $170 total for 5lbs if needed. I refuse to make the energy companies rich. I work too hard to give it away. I spent 2 hours cleaning my outside coil, removing all the outer housing cage and top, mine does not have a convenient flip top cap so it took more time, gently brushed cleaned the fins and gently water washed them after. Most companies charge $89 to do this but they will not do anything labor intensive and will just spray the coil but you get buildup in the corners that gets missed. Once last thing just like you have bad meal at a restaurant, bad service at store etc. just b/c they are called pro's doesn't mean they are really good at what they do. They only care about the up sell and corporate gimmicks.

Trust me... the condenser coil was corroded, it's base was rusted way and I had it sitting on wood blocks in the drain pan. 39 degrees supply air is way too cold. Increase fan speed if you can. That along with 65 degrees inside temp when its 95 to 100 outdoors tells me your system is over sized as well. Bigger is not always better bro. Your not removing enough humidity from the air because your system will be short cycling. That effects the comfort you get from the cool air circulating thru the house. Not Good!

Daniel, it is obvious that the installing company did a good job as far as the install goes. What I want to know what was done prior to the installation. Was there a blower door performed? Was there a duct analysis performed? how do you know that this unit has the right BTU output? For the infiltration rate because each home is different. After the install was done do you have any proof that the air flow is right according to manufacture specifications, do you have anything in writing that states that do you have any paper work stating that this machine was installed as per the proper workman like standard. Do you have any proof that this unit was commissioned properly? I'll say no because if you don't ask you will not receive. I am not trying to discouraging you in any way just trying to educate you and others from making big mistakes. HVAC equipment installed wrong is why our utility bills are so high in this country and there are correct ways and wrong ways to do it and it's time we start doing it right and stop doing them wrong.

A larger A.C. condenser might be the wrong unit for your house! Roughly for every 600 sq feet of living space you need one tonne of refrigeration. 4 1/2 tonne capacity for a condenser is just right for 3000 sq feet of living space. If you were sold anything more it would make your coils to freeze up. This is one example of "bigger" is not better. Size your condenser based on the square footage of your living space!

Over all great video. You CANNOT however use a IR gun to take air temps, you are measuring the surface temperature of what ever you are pointing that IR gun at. The IR gun measuring the out vent at 10.24 is likely measuring the temperature of inner limning not the air temp, the result is unfortunately invalid. The usage graph is interesting, It would likely take 8-10 years to get back the cost of the upgrade using those figures. I would say this house uses far to much energy. We have a 80,000 pool, ducted 14 year old 16KW (unknown Seer rating) aircon in a 2900ft slightly larger than average house, so technically undersized in a tropical climate, and we average around 60-70% of the usage vs that new unit. I suggest the reason is we don't leave the air-con on 24/7, usually turn it on late in the day so its comfortable for bed.
@frankeggers4024

Think VERY carefully before replacing an air conditioner that is still working properly. A new one may be more efficient, but the new ones have problems. The fan and blower motors have no oil cups. Thus, there is no way to oil the bearings to prevent premature failure. Recently I had to pay almost $400 to replace a condenser fan motor which had frozen bearings. The reason that it had frozen bearings was that there was no provision to oil them. Motors WILL fail unless they are periodically oiled which means that all motors which cannot be oiled will fail prematurely.

You will save 20% a month, but what is the trade-off? New, high efficiency units are made of materials which are FAR lighter and thinner walled than the old units were. This aluminum has replaced copper coils and the constant vibration and harmonic resonation of both the compressor and fan motor will shake this frail material apart just in time for your warranty to run out.

Be careful guys with the ''seer'' number, it means nothing if your house is not insolated properly or the line voltage in your neck of the woods falls below 200 or the a/c unit was not installed properly or the sun heats your a/c condenser most of the day and other factors that will lower the seer .Daniel by the way in your house is too cold.

I'm sure I could have kept my old systems going for more years, but had to get the house ready for sale and no one was going to buy a house with 49 year old air conditioners. There was a leak in one of the line sets and a break-on-make timer needed replacement. Contactors were very hard to find, etc. I replaced both complete systems for $7200. The new air handlers are quieter, of course, but the compressor and fan are about the same. They are more efficient but $7200 buys a LOT of electricity!

I think your IR gun is off about 5 degrees. That would put your supply air temperature around 45 to 50. Those things tend to register a little low when you point them close to the vents due to the metal getting a little colder than the air. You want your delta T to be around 20 to 25 so your system is working well. Your supply was showing 65. Again due to the metal getting a little colder and the IR being off the air is really around 75 degrees going in.

Your "old" system was almost new to me. Mine were 49 years old and still working when I replaced them. The new Goodmans are much more efficient, of course. You might want to check your supply air temp. with a thermometer inserted into the register. The dry bulb temp. should be about 55 deg. in a correctly functioning system. The difference between supply and return air temps should be 15-20 deg. in a correctly functioning and charged system. Colder doesn't mean better.

I bet your thermostat or "system controller" for this new install is not a old mechanical type unit. I bet it is computerized with at least a 7 day calendar to program a turn on/off schedule. :) The electronically controlled systems are true and tried for at least 10 years. Longer in Japan as electricity costs a premium there and noise is a great concern. Good luck to you.

I understand your desire to feel "cold" air blowing around when it's hot outside. But, I think what you really want is to be very comfortable. When you have to turn the system off to avoid cold air during dinner, the goal of continuous comfort isn't being achieved. Many things could be wrong. You should consider starting a careful, systematic analysis.

I like to keep good equipment running, too, as you know from the above. Fridge is 34 years old, washer 45, dryer 45, etc. All work very well. The only repairs have been very minor and done by me. I actually got an AC license to service my own central air systems, but won't need that any more. The new systems included a 10 year parts and labor warranty, no charge annual cleaning, etc. from a 60 year old local company.

I'm a big fan of keeping old equipment running as long as it is feasible to do so. I agree with you however in this case. That exchanger looked painfully corroded, and as you already pointed out you have to factor in some value to your time, likelihood of future failure and the cost to make those repairs. More than once I've thrown good money after bad at old equipment only to come up wishing I'd made the decision to replace sooner. Hope you recycled the old unit (embodied energy).

Nordyne introduced 23 SEER in 2006. Currently their IQ Drive system with the DC brushless variable speed Panasonic compressor and variable speed condenser fan is 24.5 Seer. Their modulating furnace is 97+%AFUE.

Mario Fernandez , do you have a 3000 square feet of living space? If your house is bigger than 3k sq feet then 5 tonne A.C. condenser is not enough. Roughly, one tonne condenser unit for every 600 sq feet of living space. One tonne condenser is equivalent to 12000 BTU.
@homayounshirazi9550
@homayounshirazi9550 7 лет назад
john spinosa , compressor "burn out" is usually caused by a faulty capacitor . You may have needed only a new capacitor after it was first tested to confirm that it was not putting out the required # micro Farads that it was supposed to. Good luck with your new unit.

My house had a 30 year old unit made in 1985. I replaced that unit since I was told it was "inefficient". Not only did I NOT save a great deal of money (about $22 a month), but I can also see the new aluminum in the compressor unit outside already turning a chalky white after a single year! What people FAIL to note is that IF you insulate your HOUSE and make IT more efficient, you will be able to afford the extra $22 a month and buy a good, old fashioned, low efficiency AC unit that will outlast your mortgage...

How did you pull the system down to microns? Did you nitro purge while brazing? What were the Subcooling and Superheat readings as per the specs? What was the indoor static psi as per the specs? Temperature differences at the return and supplies mean little if these other steps are not done. Seal the ducts? Upgrade insulation in the attic? Check the infiltration in the home? These steps will save more money than just a new system. What did the load calculation say? Sizing the system is very important. All in all, you aren't going to fair near as well as the pro's that do these things- and these things can mean a system that lasts 5-10 or 15 years. Be cautious though- many so called pros don't even do these things.
@wholeNwon
@wholeNwon 10 лет назад
Absolutely! If people went to the trouble of educating themselves, there would be far fewer defective installations, far fewer complaints about various products and probably fewer new systems sold just for "better efficiency". I have seen far more situations where the homeowner can save much more money by doing what you described than any savings they will gain over their lifetimes by removing perfectly good systems and buying more "efficient" ones.

Something is wrong with your temperature readings. The lowest air temperature you measured was 95F, but you then read the liquid line temperature as 93F. It is impossible for the liquid line to be cooler than the ambient air.
@DanielScheerHowTo
@DanielScheerHowTo 10 лет назад
It's a Black and Decker... and I measured the surface temps, which are probably slightly warmer than ambient air.

The money you save on the light bill was spent on the equipment and double after the warranty runs out and you have to fix something. The old blower motors cost about $100 the new variable speed motors are about $550. But you saved $20 a month on your light bill

i installed a goodman furnace 7 years ago. the first two years showed a huge savings in electricity and gas both. since then we have dropped yearly until now it is less efficient then the one we replaced it with. just goes to show.. there are parts to fix every part of all of it... and its still better quality than new stuff.
