I don't use Shaperbox, but have been doing this for a long time if I don't want obvious 'pump'. There are many ways to accomplish this & it can be applied to anywhere in the frequency range on any elements that are conflicting.. done subtlety, the whole song gently pumps too 😎

People love this pumping effect because is great to be honest ..makes it more exciting basically ... But I think its more exciting making a better arrangement decision because you still can get a nice and punchy relationship between those two elements without having to obligate the bass go down when kick hits. Wha I hear is basically it gave the bass the grove that was missing , something that could be done from the beginning. Sidechain has became the easy way to not bother producing and go straight to mixing. Lets face it we all want that subs down there shaking the entire building but also the kick breaking the basement ..but nobody wants to sit ,analyze and create . Just keep throwing beats and loops everywhere ...we fix it in the mix mentality.

I've been doing this with Peak Controller and an EQ in Fl Studios for years. Same technique, never found a more flexible one.

using subwoofers will always result in better mixing for low-end in my experience, when I use headphone, the kick sometimes just too loud when playing on a subs, or it's just my preference😊.

When I started making music like 20 ago, I could not understand why there was not a way to specifically side chain a certain frequency band. Only the whole thing. Then, years later things like Fabfilter and Waves F6 came out where I was finally able to do exactly that.

haven't tried shaperbox but it looks convenient. can achieve a similar affect with sidechain eq/ multiband compression. I saw some ppl asking how to use the low end as the trigger,, if your eq/comp dont have an internal sidechain filter, you can make a send for your drum loop and low-pass to isolate the kick as your side signal

How would this work in with using MB compression at the same time on your ducking like I've seen many producers use before (combo of volume/mb compression)?

Isn't this multiband compression with sidechain routing for ducking? I'm not sure making up non-standard terms is helping your student base....

Is there an easy way to adjust the input signal of the drum break so that just the kick would trigger the sidechain with shaperbox, or is it only possible with ableton‘s gate and other workaround’s? Thanks!

That was pretty much all sidechaining was used for decades ago. Just making room. Not this awful pumping crap today, to cover up a multitude of sins, and a shit track.

too bad I can't do this in propellerheads reason. all I can do is a simple sidechain, and if I want my kicks to really stick out, I have to do 100% extreme sidechaining

Make an ableton effect rack with 3 channels with auto filters. One soloing highs, one lows and the other mids. Put a compressor on the signal soloing the lows and set it to side chain mode with the kick signal as input. Send your bass and all sounds you want mixed with the kick through this entire rack. Adjust compressor and filter mix to taste. Shaper box is still dope though.

You can do this with a free plugin called TDR Nova

First time I have seen this technique for enhanced ducking. Certainly never seen the feature on any of my plug ins.

I noticed that changing the crossover db/octave from 6 to 12, or higher, changes the tonality of the sound even if no ducking is applied yet. That is problematic.

How about using better sound selection in the first place so you don't have this problem - it still sounds awful because at the end of the day its a fat sub bass and a hideously long floppy sub kick

Sidechain it's the key!

Why not just use opposing EQ boosts and cuts? For example, boost the kick before 60hz, and cut above. Then do the opposite on the bass for a mirrored span of frequencies.

Sidechaining a stock multiband compressor to the kick (lowband only) achieves the same thing if you dont have shaperbox
