You got it, Emma! Here'a spoiler alert though...ALL scales are important to learn. You just gotta have 'em all in the pocket! No excuses :)

Oh, my glob. The TVK "cho-co-late"/"peanut" rhythm breakdown technique... stealing it. Can't believe I never thought about making the rhythms into fun words to make key sigs feel less terrible or intimidating. Definitely a good idea for tutoring young players.

Alfonso, I know it may be difficult to figure out what you want to do in life, but I would recommend you pursue what makes you most happy! Just because it may be "hard to find a job" doesn't mean that the career isn't viable. Musicians in modern-day society must be entrepreneurial and create their own path! If you don't enjoy that and simply want a job, maybe this isn't for you! I wouldn't hastily make a decision, but if you like math and physics, I think you'll have more success finding a job! Just take your time and make sure it's what you want to do! :)

one challenge with sight reading on bass trombone is what position / trigger combination will be the best for example a passage that has the notes Db Eb F Gb Ab Bb C Db (starting 1 line below bass clef) Db can be played 1st trigger position 6, trigger 1&2 position 2.5, or 2nd trigger position 7.5 Eb can be played trigger 1 position 3.5, or trigger 2 position 5 F can be played position 6, 1st trigger position 1, or 2nd trigger position 2.5 Gb can be played, position 5, or 2nd trigger position 1 Ab can be played position 3, 1st trigger position 5, or 2nd trigger position 6 Bb can be played position 1, trigger 1 position 3, or trigger 2 position 4 C can be played position 6, 1st trigger position 1, or 2nd trigger position 2.5 Db can be played position 5 or 2nd trigger position 1. When it comes down to so many options it comes down to 1st how fast is the passage you have to play, 2nd intonation of each of the options to hit accurately , and 3rd sometimes it just comes to personal preference of what the individual prefers to use.

Last year I was auditioning for the ensemble above the level of the current orchestra I was in, but I totally failed at the sight-reading and was put back in the same orchestra. I'm trying to practice really hard so I can get into a better ensemble because right now I feel like I'm not really improving as much as I could be.

Hey TVK! I was wondering if you could do a video about how to get over anxiety about having a private lesson teacher? I'm currently preparing to audition at Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, England on Flute and this has proven to be a big problem for me. Thank you so much! 😊
@ThatViolaKid
@ThatViolaKid 9 лет назад
+Brenda Lindstadt Hey Brenda! Can you elaborate for me? Like, what sort of anxiety are you feeling? is it because you're afraid to sound bad in front of your teacher, or are they kind of mean to you? Nerves are natural when you care about the teachers opinion, but it's rare for them to be that bad to where it becomes a problem--at least in my experience.
@brendalewandowski4151
@brendalewandowski4151 9 лет назад
+ThatViolaKid I am afraid to sound bad in front of her because I've been working with her for awhile and I feel like I'm not making enough progress, despite practicing in ALL of my spare time I feel like I'm falling behind. I don't think she's mean to me, but she's definitely pushing me further than I though and making me practice techniques I've never heard of before. I suppose I'm just afraid of disappointing her.
@ThatViolaKid
@ThatViolaKid 9 лет назад
Well, that's normal! You have to be more patient with yourself! Progress isn't linear. In fact, you may go months without getting better--and you might even get a bit WORSE!!! And that's ok! Learning is weird like that! If you keep working hard and being consistent, one day you'll just wake up...and be LOADS better! And I'm sure you're teacher knows that! Just keep your head up homie!

Could you make a video about the importance of practicing scales? I noticed how important they were practicing Brahms variations on a theme by Haydn finale, which features some nice fast B-flat major scale runs, and was wondering if you could elaborate on the usefulness of knowing scales and which scales are the best to learn. Thanks!

How did you know that music was what you wanted to do as a career? I love playing the viola but I'm not sure if I want to do this as a career. My biggest fear is just finding a job because I hear it's not so easy after you get your degree. I also feel I have a lot of potential in other areas like physics and math. Any tips on finding what you want to do in life? I know it's a big question but any insight would be appreciated :)

Hey man, I have two questions: how do violists reach the high register on the instrument?, and, are there available "cutaway" or ergonomic Violas for people like me, with small hands? please answer!! :)
@ThatViolaKid
@ThatViolaKid 8 лет назад
To reach the higher register of a viola, you have to get your thumb around the neck as you shift up! I think there may be special violas that help facilitate this, but I would imagine that they sacrifice quality of sound

@sejoon1
@sejoon1 9 лет назад
hey TVK, what are your ideas on using your whole bow?
@ThatViolaKid
@ThatViolaKid 9 лет назад
+Sejoon Jun I think using your whole bow depends on a lot of factors! I think it's a good idea when depending on the sound you want to produce, which combines with other elements like the bow speed, contact point, arm, weight, bow tilt angle, etc. I think using your whole bow is an essential tool in your shed, but you don't want to use it for every job. You wouldn't use a screwdriver to hammer in a nail, would you? :)

@ThatViolaKid
@ThatViolaKid 8 лет назад
+Gabriel Neyerlin It will come with time. It's almost like multi-tasking. If you read ahead, you're processing what's coming up. The stuff you're playing at the instant has already been processed and becomes automatic.

Then there are the clefs... In the Kalmus/International edition of the viola transcription of the Paganini Caprices, the first four lines of Caprice 18 are written in bass clef. BASS CLEF. WHY WOULD YOU EVER WRITE MUSIC FOR VIOLA IN BASS CLEF

At the bottom of the page: "The beginning of this etude is written in the bass clef in order [for one] to get acquainted with it, the pitch corresponds with the written note. (an octave of C's written in bass, alto, treble)" Worst excuse ever, honestly.
