Understanding how to sign out of iMessage is critical if you manage multiple Apple IDs that you send and receive messages from. Additionally, signing out of iMessage is a great first troubleshooting step if you're having problems with sending and receiving messages on your Apple iPhone or iPad. Finally, if you're thinking about switching from an iPhone to an Android phone, you'll want to sign out of iMessage on your Apple device before getting rid of it to ensure that text messages being sent to you don't get tied up on Apple's servers and not find their way to your new, non-Apple device. This video will walk you through how to sign out of iMessage, and also how to sign back in to iMessage.
First, let's discuss how to sign out of Apple iMessage on your iPhone or iPad.
Step 1. Tap the "Settings" app on your Apple iPhone or iPad. The Settings screen will be displayed.
Step 2. Use your finger to scroll down the screen until you see Messages. Messages will feature an icon with a green background and a white speech balloon in the center of it. The Messages screen appears.
Step 3. Tap "Send & Receive" in the list of options. The iMessage window will be displayed.
Step 4. Tap the "Apple ID" field at the top of the list of options, which appears in blue text. The email address associated with your Apple ID is displayed to the right of Apple ID. An iMessage Account dialog box is displayed.
Step 5. Select "Sign Out" in the dialog box. The dialog box closes, and you'll be returned to the iMessage window, where you'll no longer see your Apple ID displayed at the top of the screen. Instead, you'll see a message in blue text that says "Use Your Apple ID for iMessage."
Congratulations! You've successfully logged out of iMessage.
And now, let's walk through how to sign back in to iMessage on your iPhone or iPad.
Step 1. Navigate back to the iMessage window by launching the Settings app, tapping "Messages," and then selecting "Send & Receive." You'll arrive at the iMessage window.
Step 2. Tap "Use Your Apple ID for iMessage" in blue text at the top of the window. A dialog box appears, asking if you want to use the current Apple ID that's associated with your device for iMessage.
Step 3. If the Apple ID displayed in the dialog box is the Apple ID you want to use with iMessages, then tap "Sign In." Alternatively, if you want to use a different Apple ID with iMessage, tap "Use Other Apple ID" and then enter the username and password associated with that Apple ID in the dialog box that appears. After entering any necessary information associated with your selection, you'll be routed back to the iMessage window, where your Apple ID associated with iMessage will be displayed at the top of the screen.
