That pump is advertised as silent. Tetra must have a different definition of "silent" to everyone else, because mine sounds like a diesel engine.

I recently bought a Hailea ACO-9602 on Amazon that claims to be 'super silent', but is actually so noisy that it wrecks my domestic living environment. Consequently, I just put in a return request for a refund.

I decided to stop faffing around with cheap pumps, so paid more for a Hailea ACO-208, which is rated at 18 watts. Things are much quieter now. To minimise the sound I suspend it in the air by the mains cable.

Only really silent ones I own is a tiny 1 watt pump I have on a shrimp tank (made by Cambani). I own 2 but one has become noisy.
@Nine-Signs
@Nine-Signs 4 года назад
@@CrankCase08 I'd screw a couple of small hooks into the case and suspend it off that. If off the mains cable as you mentioned, vibrations + weight over time may cause you problems. The flex though it seems robust is basically lamp wire. Not designed to support weight, neither is the internal grommet or widget that stops the cabke from tugging directly at the solder points. Best wishes.

OK now that I've cleared the air and got that offensive post from Mark out of my mind I can stop playing around, get serious and ask my question. Most of the stuff you post actually helped me out a few times and I'm always ready to try something new so any and all ideas you give I'm willing to try because I know, you know what you're doing. I'd like to try this idea because I think it might help me in out in the future. My question is... do you duct tape them to the kitchen or the bedroom?

@TheOpelkoenjas

Yep, it can get pretty noisy at some point, doesn't it. I myself don't even notice it anymore, but my wife on the other hand has problems sleeping sometimes and every little noise in the room keeps her awake then. I solved the rattle noise with a simple sponge taped to the air pumps, now I have to find a solution to the bubble sounds. They are homemade biological filters, made from plastic bottles, ceramic rings and black sponges in combination with air pumps. Kinda makes a lot of noise those things, but super effective I must say. And cheap. LOL

It's hard to say exactly how long the plug wire will last, but if it's securely taped, it should be able to withstand the vibrations from the air pump for a decent amount of time. Just keep an eye on it and make sure to re-tape if needed.

You can get REALLY quiet air pumps like the aPump that operate basically silently. I have a tiny piezoelectric Japanese-made air pump called the Nisso Mute S that makes only the tiniest of humming noises. I sleep a foot away from it with no problems. The only cons are they don't move a lot of air (although mine runs a box filter in my 25 gallon just fine) and they are a little pricey too ($35ish).

Nah, Duck tape is actually correct, since it isn't named Duct due to repairing ductwork, but Duck due to it's semi-waterproof nature. It was only colored silver and called "duct" tape because people kept getting it wrong- you were right at first!

Bruh that air pump needs to take in air, you covered it's ability to take in air. Make a little hole so that air can go inside the pump cavity. Nice idea to silence it. I'm currently using a portable protector case, made it quiet by 95%.

So here is an evil plan to combine combine aquarium and and rock polishing hobbies. Attach a tray to house polishing grit and rocks to the air pump. Will it work as a vibrating rock polisher that runs 24/7? I'm gonna find out.

You would think the glass jar would make it way louder! (like setting your cell phone in a jar to make the sound louder! i wonder if you put like a $1 store sponge or 3 inside the jar might help dampen the sound by soaking it up and then duct tape the top?? I have those older whisper deep water air pumps and OMG the noise drives me CraZy!!! ive set them on sponges to keep vibrating down or keep from rattling.
@MarksShrimpTanks
@MarksShrimpTanks 6 лет назад
The noise you hear is all from vibration ,thats why if the jar is big enough you can suspend it in the Jar so that the pump has nothing to vibrate against...ducttape also seems to help dampen the noise even further because with normal tape it doesnt really work the same .
@MoreChannelNoise
@MoreChannelNoise 6 лет назад
Those plastic feet on that Tetra pump make it a lot bigger so why not cut them off first before suspending it in a jar.
@mskouds

what about the heat? and where does the pump suck air from? it kinda looks like if it super tight seal air pump would just make a vacuum in the glass...
@MarksShrimpTanks
@MarksShrimpTanks 7 лет назад
Its not sealed I say that in the video,also all a pump is is a magnet and a copper coil.
@jnrahm2038
@jnrahm2038 7 лет назад
The coil is what generates the heat
@jnrahm2038
@jnrahm2038 7 лет назад
also keep in mind that hanging it from the wire means that in the long run you are going to damage the wire which is unsafe. So just keep an eye on the cable :)
@MarksShrimpTanks
@MarksShrimpTanks 7 лет назад
It doesnt produce heat like you think it does,the case is cold to the touch in normal use.
@MarksShrimpTanks
@MarksShrimpTanks 7 лет назад
It will absolutely not do any damage to the cable it only weights about 1/2 kilo ,I could hang 5 kg on that wire and it would do nothing to it.

Why not just surround the pump in the jar with Large Polystyrene balls (from a craft store... Hobbycraft)! I've put noisy pumps into cardboard boxes with packing foam/curly chips before now with holes cut in the box for air inlets. The packing chips allow a circulation of air around the pump to stop it overheating!

It seems you restrict air flow which gives extra resistance in the spool which shortens the lifespan of the pump. The noise from pumps like this is 9/10 times caused by a slightly shifted membrane( the magnet hits the spool), or dirty valves. You can open it up, clean it out, ad a little lube and the noise is gone. These pumps just need a little love from time to time.
@MarksShrimpTanks
@MarksShrimpTanks 3 года назад
I am not restricting any airflow the inlet size on the pump is tiny compared to the size of the breather hole I have on the jar, this pump lasted for years and never overheated and yes I did test it, this video wouldn't have anywhere near as many views if this didnt work.
@Iggy89
@Iggy89 3 года назад
@@MarksShrimpTanks I´ve put a beer coaster under a wobbly table and it hasn´t wobbled in years ! This jar thing might work but it's a beer coaster solution. Just find the problem and fix it. Restricted air flow or not this pump is still not repaired, still making noise, noise means mechanical contact in the pump, mechanical contact means wear. These things are easy to fix if you would jus take the couple screws out and have a look. If you're washing machine starts making noise you don't isolate your washing room, you fix the machine right ? The screws and nuts in these things can loosen up due to vibration/ valves get dirty / membranes break/ and things move a litle out of the place. All you need is a screwdriver, no jars and ducktape. You could even see what air flow restriction does to the mechanical working of your pump while it's working and why it becomes quieter with a little load on it.

I was looking through some of your older stuff and I actually found three that I haven't seen till now and this is one of them. They are also the only three videos you have that didn't get a thumbs up from me... Till now :) There were and still are a few that I didn't like as much because of different reasons. A.) They were simple "common sense" but I give you the thumbs up anyway (because "common sense" isn't common these days. If things aren't bought up, people won't bother to notice them) B.) been done hundreds of times, by others with aquariums, vivariums or any other type of animal habitat. Thumbs up for the fact that you work hard at pointing out everything in detail, explaining as well as visual instructions giving everyone not just the "how" but more importantly, the "why" C.) I may have something that works better in my opinion or I though of ways to improve what you've done. 365 days in a year + 365 videos = 365 thumbs up, Congrats to you sir!

Mark, you know those awful D-cell air pumps that are used during power outages? They are HORRENDOUSLY noisy. Do you think this would work with those? Obviously we'd need to change the batteries at some point, but hopefully power would be restored by then. I have a few of them, but cringe even turning them on.
