It's hard to find mix if a student has an environment where they can't sing loudly. Once you find a place where you have privacy, half the battle is won.

I have so many problems singing in my flat apartment because of my neighbours... well, my EX neighbours now, they were practically bullies and I couldn't practice singing. Now I'm in a new flat and getting a comissioned wardrobe to lock me inside and scream. We'll see how I improve!

@Solomon Ultra this is so true. I routinely do karaoke, and I often found myself fvcking up because I wasn't practicing loud enough. Once I started going near or full-strength in my car, things began to shift more in my favor (getting accustomed to singing seated versus standing on the mic presents challenges too, but I'm confident those will be resolved in time with enough consistent practice)

Hey man, you're one of the best vocal teachers on RU-vid. These tips have been some of the most helpful I've come across. So many little ideas paired with concise explanations of the physical/anatomical side that get you to a good place for singing without making some of the crazy sounds some others teach that, though they occasionally can be helpful, usually are a lot less like singing than a lot of your ideas.

While I'm sure you dive way more into details during in-person lessons (like how to really keep the right balance of TA and CT muscle, which is key to achieve such high bright mix), this is as good as it gets on here, and your brilliant sung examples are just the icing on the cake. I am 82 years old. I started to sing February 2019. I always could sing good for low pitches. My best tone is around C3 and I started with a low note of C2. I now go down to B flat 1. I could only go up to D4. I now have good sounds to above C5. I can give straight chest up to G#4 and on a good day A5. I note that I have several breaks in my voice as it changes tone quality changes from Bass Baritone to Baritone and from Baritone to Tenor and from full chest to mixed. My mixed above this is very beautiful as my coach usually stops at C5 but I can go higher. I note that my falsetto goes to about D6. i am practicing by singing Sunrise,Sunset an octave up following a soprano. I now can sing The Music of the Night with many changes of chest to falsetto and back.

Hi Tyler, You have an amazing technic and your advices and exercises are really good, so thank you. My singing teacher has exactly the same “references” (Ingo Titze etc) and bases his technic on a physiological approche (like Estill, CVT...). I love the lessons with my singing teacher and I also love to see and listen other teachers who got real good technic and learn from them, at home haha Anyway. I can hear that your first mechanism (chest voice/talking voice/or other term you use) in your middle-low range is really... I don’t know... good... meaty haha... I don’t know how to express it haha. Your talking voice/your tone is very “present”, with a really good closure of the vocal chords, and ,here comes the question and suggestion: could you talk about how to renforce this first mechanism/talking voice/chest voice in a next video ? Thanks again for your work and your contribution to the “vocal world”, I saw A LOT of videos about teaching vocal technic, and your approach AND your demonstration are making me writing my first comment on RU-vid !

The problem with this exercise is that already starting with a lip drill I can either be in the head voice doing it or in chest voice, So already from there people are going to have very different experience. for example I started to do this exercise straight on A4, And it was easy I was in a light mix because I started my lip drill in a heady voice. But then I decided to do the exercise along with you from the low notes and of course I started my lip drill in chest voice, and from there it was hard for me to go up, the mix didn’t happen.BUT! If starting in a heady voice the lip drill, from there it is very easy to get to a mix, i would say it light nix, but it is mix. So great job on the exercise! Just needed some precision about the lip drill

I was wondering if you think that basically anyone can “become” a tenor by just learning how to mix? Or is that decided by how much thyroaritnoid (sp?) muscle engagement that they are able to keep incorporated in their mix?

Dude Tenor and Baritone define "colour " of the voice, timbre, you can sing anything you want in any range you want but you can't change your voice type, it is a matter of your anatomy. But you can sing in full voice high notes as Baritone no problem, check Freddie and Axl

My problem is I can't tell whether I'm already doing things correctly and my mix just doesn't go that high or if my chest voice goes up to A4 and I've never even mixed. I have zero issues in any part of my range up to A4. I can sing from A3 to A4 on any vowel, at different volumes, sirening, holding A4, without cracking or yelling, but it all falls apart at Bb4, like there's a wall between the two notes.

Everyone is different and it sounds like you're similar to me. Deeper voice, darker tamber, heavier sound, fairly open position. The way I had to solve it was working on the thinner light side of my voice. Very uncomfortable and I hate the sound of it but it helped to balance it out. I focused on a breathy head voice with compression in a closed position. Something like an R&B singer and then tried to get really squeaky to add power like a punk band. Still working on balancing it but I can finally get into a mixed configuration with resonance

I’ve been singing for well over 45 years. And I can completely understand what you’re talking about. Next voice is a very abstract concept to grasp. And even after all my years of singing I’m not quite sure if I understand it fully. It’s more something that you feel rather than what you think. It’s a very gray area. And me personally, I like things that are either one way or the other. I’m not a big fan of things in a gray area. Be patient with yourself feel your way through it and watch different tutorials online from different people Explaining what they do.

This is really cool but how you enter the mix voice without notes before for example in the chorus of the song without by Mariah Carey? How do you find that coordination if the first note you have to hit is one in the mix register I mean a note you can't hit in the cheat voice?
@skrobie
@skrobie 4 года назад
For this to work, does my falsetto and chest voice need to overlap? Mine barely does as I can barely belt an f#4 at the top of my chest voice, and sing a mild, decompressed F4 at the lowest on my falsetto. The thing is my larynx is pushed very high at the top of my chest and is very low at the lowest part of my falsetto, so I don’t understand how I get get one note with 2 registers. To sing the same note in each register would mean very different larynx positions. If I flip(yodel) through registers with the same larynx position there is about an octave difference in notes.

Thanks to Tyler, I can now get into mixed voice! I'm a deep bass so this is crucial and I literally struggled after a middle D or E when I first started singing. Now I can hit a G# semi consistently and can get up to a B on occasion but I have to work on staying in it consistently and smoothing it out. My issue is that literally only about 1 minute at a time can I hit a high mix but after, it will begin to fry or crackle and it feels different. It doesn't feel like I'm straining but I noticed only my right side feels like it's fully contracting. Is that normal? It's the same when I cough and when I drink cold or hot liquid. I only feel it on the right side of my throat. I hope I'm not broken lol
@tylerwysong

I think I'm starting to get it. Is it normal to have some sort of "flip" though? It doesn't feel like a complete flip over like a full falsetto. But instead of collapsed feeling it feels floaty? And in order for me to get there, I kinda have to do this "switch" from a heavy tone to kinda like lighter coordination. It definitely creates a piercing sound though... If this isn't it, can I build off this and make it stronger? also my tone up there is slightly husky but still bright. maybe because I haven't used this coordination before ? Kinda feel like my vocal cords are slightly touching and buzzing.

This video makes a lot of sense thanks! I am just struggling because when I “mix” those higher notes up to an A there is no break and it feels resonating towards my temple instead of my chest, but it does not sound very full and satisfying like when you demonstrate it. I sound wide/pinched/cutting. Do you think I am on the right track and the more full vocal quality will come with practice or am I probably approaching it wrong??

Ty: I notice you wrote this a year ago but don't know whether you are still experiencing difficulty? If so, maybe if you are tensing up too much while trying to sing and trying to force it to come out in the way you want (IDK). But if you try to relax more you might start to get better results. Also it seems the techniques of singing properly is very complex and mind-boggling but it is also very much about tongue-placement. There are situations where if your tongue is too high or in the wrong position at different vowels etc, it can block your potential. But just experiment and see what works best. This is my take on it.

La verdad es que sí, pero creo que podemos agradecer que al menos tenemos internet para más o menos informarnos y hallar formas de progresar, por cierto qué raro que primero hables inglés y luego le mandes saludos en español xD

Could you make a video about vocal distortion? How to sing like Adam Gontier, Chester Bennington, Chad Kroeger... please
@tylerwysong
@tylerwysong 4 года назад
You know what I don't sing that way and don't consider myself a qualified teacher in that type of singing. I do know that Melissa Cross has some good information about these types of singing as well as the CVT method has done a ton of research on how to teach the methods effectively. I would start with them and see what you can find. Best of luck to you on this distorted adventure ahead! Cheers.

I don’t know what you mean when you talk about the vowel being formed or tuned properly. My concept of tuning is pitch related. How do you tune a vowel? I would also love a video about how to understand voiceprint better. I know it will show mix when the wave oscillates between the 1st and 2nd harmonic. But, being in mix doesn’t mean I’m in correct resonance. Is there a way voiceprint can show me better resonance?

Tuning the vowel is how you shape your throat and mouth basically. All the vowels have different shapes, that's why we perceive different vowel qualities, but you can refine the way you shape/tune them.

Sir,I can't do chest voice above g3 if I keep raising it,it will get me to mixed voice on a4 but,I can do mixed voice above c4 without any pressure and if I do puffy cheek like you teach,it sounds connected but for example if I do it from c3 bring it till g3 and then will jump on a4 but without break into falsetto So on my opinion my problem is my chest voice limits are above g3 below c4 and for that I have to do it as mix voice but my mix voice not enough closure to do it because when I bring it down it will go to vocal fry Please help me sir,I’ve been searching it for so long..

‏‪16:38‬‏ I feel this sensation on my head when i sing with vocal chords closure, even in chest, it is very unpleasant feeling, it hurts my ears, all my head buzzing, and i think this is why naturally i never used it, i know it sounds better, but what can i do about the physical bad sensation?

Does this mean I need to change the shape of the vowels to closer to ee/oo so they mix earlier or easier?

It's called the Rossini Scale. It's a I - V7 progression if that means anything to you, if not no worries, one of these days i want to make a video on how to play some of the scales!

Hi, when I get into theses really high regions my voice starts cracking. So I can't really mantain the pitch constantly. But like there is no sound coming out periodically and it sounds kind of distorted. Might my voice be damaged or is it just not trained enough yet. What can I do? Thank you
