Yeah, dude, it's something that many of us struggle with. I was certainly not gifted with an amazing voice or high range. But we have to realize that it's not about that - it's about finding your own authentic sound.

Hi from Spain, I really enjoyed your video, presentation and practical application of how you perform. I use a de-tuned guitar one whole step down and like you point out, I also use heavier gauge strings to keep the tension similar to my other guitars. I uses 56/13's on the de-tuned guitar and 54/12's on my standard tuned guitars. I also use these heavier 56/13's on an acoustic guitar tuned in open "G" to cover Rolling Stones classics, I tune this GGDGBD using two 5th. A strings, Keith Richards only used 5 strings removing his low E on both his Telecaster and his acoustic, I call my open "G" tuning " Double open G tuning,it really increases the base sound which I like and no one plays "Brown Sugar" etc., in my tuning, I don't think? We are all different and need to be unique like you said, your F#minor is an example which I really liked. My vocal range is my problem and I will take your advice using the audience!!! I also use 56/13's for DADGAD tuning and even tried 59/14's but then I had to alter the nut, but it sounded good. Great video, really enjoyed listening to your advice, kind regards John.

There are a lot of good songs I'd love to play, but avoided them due to my crappy voice... Example, I want to learn "Sounds of Silence" by Simon and Garfunkel/Disturbed...

@@jasonstallworth it’s funny you should mention Ken Tamplin, because he was just outed by Wings of Pegasus on YT for lip syncing to pre-recorded vocal tracks in a live performance. He lip syncs the high lead vocal parts. He even did this in 1989, when only in his mid 20s, as Marc Ajax recently pointed out in a video. I don’t know why KT does this live, because he can obviously sing, and but it’s sad and unethical for a vocal coach to be miming live rather than practicing what he preaches. At least you never mime, unlike KT!

@@HumbleTrader001 yeah man I just saw that video and I actually left a comment giving a different perspective. Because his warm ups are something I do before every live show, and I play out 2-3x a week. And to be fair, it’s probably not so much his specific warm ups but just warming ip, in general. It’s changed everything. But his 2 warm ups are easy to follow.

Hey Jason, great tutorial thank you. We have a very similar vocal range, how many steps down do you typically transpose your songs? Thanks! 🤘🏻
@jasonstallworth
@jasonstallworth 4 месяца назад
Dude, it really depends on the song. It's a mix of catering to my vocal range but also how the chords sound. This is why I love transposing into C sharp minor and F sharp minor, to use more open strings. Brian Adam's Summer of 69 is a great example. I believe it's in D, which is a stretch for me. I could pull it off in C, but those chords just don't sound right. So I play it in A, which allows for more of an open and full sound. Of course, you can use a capo but I've never used one (I should start adding that!)

It makes perfect sense. One tip is to play that safe riff in a different key, like a flat or sharp key (if your is in Em, figure out where those notes are to play it in C#m!) Once you that, then add two more notes! Gradually, you’ll find yourself starting to expand

Your preferred method does make the most sense to me, but, I hate the thought of learning how to play songs incorrectly. For this reason, I keep three guitars on hand, one in std. tuning, one tuned a half-step down, and one a full-step down. Admittedly, the strings on the one tuned a full step down are very loose and twangy, which isn't great. Because of this, I might have to give your suggestion a try. I really enjoy you and your channel, so thank you.
@jasonstallworth
@jasonstallworth 10 дней назад
Give it a try. And don’t worry so much about whether the song is correct. You can’t replace the entire band with an acoustic. So I encourage you to focus more on putting your own style and twist to the songs.

@@jasonstallworth Jason, per your advice, I transposed the song Summer of 69 (first time I've ever transposed a song) by opening with an A chord instead of a D and all I can say is WOW. Is a song I've always wanted to sing but, even after tuning down a full step, had no hope of ever hitting the high notes. If I do say so myself, even though it is three full steps down from the original, with the transposed version my voice sounds awesome and I love singing it. You were/are 100% right. I've been playing guitar for 45 years (since I was 15) and your advice might be the best I've ever received! I can't thank you enough, sir.

I am sure this is a stupid question, but I have to ask it anyway. I will preface this by saying; I am not a singer or musician. I am asking purely because I don't know. Why not sing in the same key but in an octave that is good for your voice? When I do sing, like at a church, or crowd event, or when I am alone in the car blasting tunes (most common), my singing voice is actually deeper than my regular voice which is moderately baritone. Otherwise I simply cant match the note. I have like 1 octave range. But isn't in tune OK? Why does it have to match the "height?" As a listener of music, I am not put off by someone who sings a tune in their own voice when they are covering a song, especially if they are covering a lot of songs in different genres. Some tones may fit some genres better, but it's a cover. What is the big deal? I honestly don't get it.
@jasonstallworth
@jasonstallworth 3 года назад
This is a great question! For most, singing an entire octave lower is going to be way too low. The goal is to find that sweet spot that highlights your natural voice. Sometimes that may be just a half-step down while other times it may be two steps down. And there may be some songs that you sound better singing an octave lower. I actually do that with a Tesla song. Also, playing the song in a different key (and chord progression) can sometimes help you put your own flavor to the song. But the bottom line is you want to play it in a key that works best for your voice.

I can play guitar well enough to do solo gigs. My voice COULD be okay if I could just stay on pitch. I have a tendency, I think, to focus too much on my guitar playing and I get lazy with my vocal notes. Any tips would be appreciated. 👽✌️ I also adapt the vocal lines to fit my range. Many times, I change the whole vocal melody in parts, make it mine…which means I fix it so I can actually pull it off.

Well, to see if there was something I was missing/overlooking regarding extending range, or getting back some of the lost range from when I was younger, I decided to take vocal lessons again for a year with someone who definitely knows what he is doing when it comes to high notes. I also saw two ENTs last year who looked at my folds to rule out damage, AND I worked with two voice therapists, but, so far, when it comes to high notes, no indication of being able to access any more high notes than I could beforehand. I'm told there's a type of vocal fold injection that could bulk up the folds and could potentially improve access to high notes, but, to me, it's probably not worth the hassle or risks. I'm told I sound good when singing songs within my range, it's just that my high notes are limited.
@jasonstallworth
@jasonstallworth Год назад
I don't think that's worth the risk. I don't have a super high range but I am learning (and sounds like you are, too) to embrace my range. I hear so many singers wrecking their voice trying belt high notes and oftentimes, it just doesn't sound good. Yes, I believe we can gradually increase our range to a point but there are limits. Also, working on going from your chest to head voice will help. But at the end of the day, the most important thing you and I can do is to simply be authentic. If that means not singing ultra high notes, so be it. It's your voice and part of your own original sound.

Method 4: buy (insert singing teacher's name here)'s singing course to magically extend your range by an octave, and then when it turns out that the course doesn't actually help for you (because, after all, results will vary, and they work best for those who are younger and/or who don't already understand the concepts), then go back to using one of the 3 methods demonstrated here that actually work. (and hopefully get a refund for the singing course that didn't help extend range)
@jasonstallworth
@jasonstallworth 3 года назад
Lol...I feel your pain on that one! I've bought many courses in my life...some good, most not so much! And that's why I strongly encourage folks to really dig deep and find their own unique voice and focus on building that. Sure, you need to learn proper techniques, breathing, control, and such. But I don't recommend folks killing their voice to try to sing higher just for the sake of hitting high notes.
@HumbleTrader001
@HumbleTrader001 3 года назад
@@jasonstallworth Yeah, and, in addition to courses, I've certainly wasted a lot of my time watching some of these singing teachers' videos on YT as well. It's okay to attempt to extend range within reason, (and okay to exercise to try and preserve the range one already has) but there's really no panacea or "magical bag of tricks" that some singing teachers seem to claim to have. They need to have a "results will vary" disclaimer since not everyone will be able to add a usable octave to their range. LOL
