One of the most recognizable and versatile voices of his era and genre, Bruce Dickinson combines a unique blend of drama, subtle operatic nods and raw aggression for a sound that's forever Maiden :) In this video, I dive into his mixed voice approach, his placement and what allows him to sound so effortless yet fully engaged in those upper stratosphere notes he likes to dwell in!

Man, you don't know how amazing it has been to me to find your channel and finally begin to sing all these repertoir I never believed I could sing. All my life I have been a fan of Iron Maiden, Chris Cornell and all those high pitched metal icons, and I thought singing their songs was impossible because of my range, but with all these techniques you teach I am starting yo discover a Lot about my voice and It's like a dream coming true. Thank you, Chris Liepe, you are an amazing teacher.

I've never thought, in my wildest dreams, that my singing skills would be on the same level as bruce. I just resigned myself without even knowing....I was actually able to do some of this on the first watch. Your lessons are literally building my voice.
@guitarrock58
@guitarrock58 4 года назад
How much time did it take to build the voice?
@fb39371
@fb39371 4 года назад
That's hard to answer. If I took all the time I've actually physically practiced I'd say about 4-5 years. I built my voice off of singing opra stuff to find my voice. because it felt comfortable and I could do it. I used to sing when I was younger when I was alone. I did that until eventually i started playing guitar and singing at the same time after I mastered that I within the last year have really buckled down and focused on my singing.
@fb39371
@fb39371 4 года назад
But you build your voice by talking so to find your singing voice you need to test your voice by making noises and crafting those noises to make the sound you want. So it might start as a dying cat sound but it will lead into a good head voice because you be testing what you can do. I actually make a lot of goofy sound effects over a mike to test my voice and see what it can do.
@guitarrock58
@guitarrock58 4 года назад
@@fb39371 Oh okay thanks! I currently sound not horrible but still weak, and I want to release an album (metal) within a year, so I'm just wondering if I can craft something roughly okay in that time, haha .
@fb39371
@fb39371 4 года назад
@@guitarrock58 if you have a base then it's possible but if your not well versed in it you could do damage to your voice. I would say, if you can, practice as much as is safe every week for a year you should be able to have decent technique. I tell my guitar students, Practice, practice, practice, but guitar is not part of your body so you have to monitor your voice so you dont strain it. Warming up can really help keep everything strong.

One thing I notice when I hear to Bruce Dickinson is that his vibrato is very peculiar, it seems like he does a big interval between the notes, similar to what we hear in opera , but it's quite unusual on rock vocalists. Awesome video btw!

Another great informative video, thanks. I'd say another suggestion would be to explore Bruce Dickinson's voice on newer album's such as Brave New World or his solo album Chemical Wedding. Sometime in the 90s it seemed his voice changed from his younger 80s sound to an older gruffed up sound. I've always wondered what he did to change his voice as he aged and i feel the way you tackle different singers techniques would perfectly for you to explore. It also would be great to see you examine singers in general as they age and change either from delveloping new technique or simply changing because they are getting older. Been learning alot from your channel, thanks again.

Your understanding of singing and ability to analyze, break it down and explain is just incredible.What a gift! Thank you so much for sharing such quality content time after time. I think you are the best on youtube at what you do. Could you please consider doing something on singers her less than spectacular live yet who sound amazing on studio recordings? This would help understand the difference between solid technique and studio magic, as well as how they both go together. For example, Vince Neil of Motley Crue and Stephen Pearcy of Ratt come to mind. How can such dodgy vocalists get to sound so magic on a record? Can someone even sound that awesome with pure technique alone? Would love to understand this!

Hello, Chris! Love your videos! I have a request and would be very grateful if you would analyze some of Paul Di'Anno's singing on the first two Iron Maiden records. Especially these brief, but key moments. Prowler - Basic grit from verse, Sanctuary - Use of longer vibrato tones throughout, Remember tomorrow - high phrase at 2:05, Charlotte the harlot - slow middle section. Running free - Ending Oh! Oh!, Wrathchild - Basic grit verse, long vibratos, siren at 1:35, Innocent Exile - ending phrase, Twilight Zone - Chorus and high phrases. Thank you for considering!

What amazes me is that one of Bruce's main influences was Ian Gillan and it is noticeable in his earlier works with Maiden and you sing same but with Robert Plant's influences among all, that's great! Thank you for revealing many tricks!

Excellent video. One question: at times when you're singing into the microphone (usually on higher notes), you kind of lean off to the side a little bit rather than singing straight on. Is that a microphone technique that changes the sound in some way, or just something that you do for comfort/other reasons?

With this video I get super clear how your voice loves Overdrive and Edge modes ( for CVT swedish school of singing ), or in other words, tunin to the First Formant ( F1 ) of the voice. Your voice goes almost never to tune the second formant, hahah that makes your voice super specialized for the style of music you do and teach. One question, how are your OO's and EE's ( u and i ) on the high range? You always tend to do open vowels, I know they're eeasier for you. I myself start changing the tuning the first formant on aprox G#4 ( depending on vowel ), then to go higher I always have more of a closed sound. When I reach to C5 or D5 I can make it a bit more Overdrive/F1, but it never sounds as yell-ish as you, because my vocal folds are naturally less adducted ( I have a small gap ).

You sound to me more like Maynard James Keenan (Tool) than Bruce Dickinson. You look a bit like MJK hehe. Cheers

Nah Maynard sounds more hollow sounding (and I mean that in a good way) and more tortured soul in his voice

I don't think it's a good idea to imitate vocalists that lost their voice. Maybe you should also mention that in your analysis. I think that imitating Dio, Kiske, Adams or even UDO is wiser than imitating Dickinson and other singers who have injured their voice.

It's not a good idea to imitate anyone. If you do and don't move to introspection, you'll lose your voice no matter what. I talk about this in nearly every video. Whether or not they lose their voice is not the point for us. We can study what they do, and carefully and introspectively try things with our own voice and in the process... learn a TON.
