Even after listening to Mike Patton for decades, the initial reaction to his singing is: "WOW... He is amazing and so untouchable... I am simultaneously awed and intimated as a vocalist...haha". But... THIS is a mindset of defeatism.
Yes, he's able to sing in 1000 different ways and they all sound good... Even when he's physically chewing on a microphone while being passed around a violent crowd, smh. But this is actually a great thing for us vocalists who are in the mindset to learn a little something from his diversity and antics!
In this lesson (brought to you by many many requests over the past year) I unpack the singing and screaming style of Mike Patton (and lots of noises in between). When we really dig into this stuff, we realize that a lot of what he is doing is quite fundamental in nature. He's just THAT good of a showman and vocalist to make it sound unreachable. BUT IT IS NOT!
We really can learn from him, put some of what he's doing in our own voices and be better, more confident and well-rounded singers for the effort. Join me as I struggle through several, longer, live examples from many of the different genres he nails. We'll marvel at his mastery and experiment with what our voices can do at the same time!

“Training, oh god no,” explains Patton. “I went to a vocal lesson one time and the guy, my teacher, made a huge pass at me. This old Liberache type and he was like ‘I’ve taught Stevie Wonder and this guy and that guy.’ He just kept putting his arm around me and tickling me and I just said I don’t think this is for me.” So then how does Patton do it? “I start out by imitating, by stealing little things here or there. You know, you start out playing six or seven nights a week and try and somehow make all of that parroting and copying of styles here and there work. You throw it all together and hopefully what comes out is your own style. There’s no other way I can explain it. Technique wise I don’t know what I’m doing and I’m sure I’m doing it wrong, but it works for me and I feel good when I’m doing it and I don’t know what the hell else I’d do if I weren’t doing that.” Mike Patton So, forget lessons

Another very important aspect of Mike’s style is his way of really punching and spitting out each syllable and throwing huge amounts of air. He uses his entire body, and also gets in character better than anyone I’ve ever seen

Patton has an inexplicable gift that he has nurtured and developed on his own and as a vocalist I respect him greatly. The music he creates and sings is outside the comfort zone of most of us, but I am inspired to work even harder to become the best musician I can be because of his inspiration. He's an amazing artist and a phenomenal performer. Sad truth is, I don't think he'll ever truly know the positive impact he has.

Best singer of all time of all genres, he can sing literally whatever he wants, however he wants, whatever he thinks of in the moment, and scream in every single pitch with full power voice who can overcome the whole band. I would love to see you do a video on Glenn Danzig, both as a younger singer in The Misfits to his prime solo career between the Danzig self-titled and Danzig 4. I always thought Glenn, especially in those first 4 solo albums, did a great balance between crooning and all out powerhouse. Danzig's ballads are just so moving and powerful. Sadly, like a lot of singers, Glenn's voice took a beating and I hear a lot of damage in his voice right now. I never want that to happen to my voice, hence why I look to the techniques you teach, Chris.

it's understandable what he does, it's just incredibly hard sometimes. For example whistle screams are something only a handful of people on the planet can do (sometimes it sounds like whistle but it's just overtone screams or inhale screams (like Kyo). Mike can do whistle screams and both of these). I understand how it's done and even though I can access my whistle register and I know all the theory behind it and vocal distortion, putting the two together is incredibly difficult, especially to do consistently. So it's more that. You can break down what he does but you''re most likely not replicating it without decades of practice

This is my new favorite satire video on the "tube of Yous." Well done, mate. If Patton gets well someday, I'd love to watch him react to this video. In all seriousness, this demonstrates some of the major differences between the "trained" and gifted "untrained" vocalist. You have an excellent, yet sterile, voice and a great technical understanding of how other humans might be able to achieve a Patton-light sound via vocal training (though your Cornell proclivities shine through; and well they should. He was a gift to vocalists of our generation). But I'd like to think a healthy Patton would just laugh, shrug, and wonder why anyone would care about his singing; and then, perhaps, take a shit on the computer. In any case, thanks for breaking it down to us fans, and here's to a renewed and rejuvenated Patton in the near future!

He's basically a voice actor He uses every sound the human voice is capable of. I doubt he's concerned about being a good singer, probably just does whatever voice he thinks is appropriate for the song

Wanted to ask if you've checked out the track Jizzlobber? There's a part around 1:40 in the chorus where he starts singing, "I hide my dirty minutes under the dirty mattress and they are making me itch." To me it sounds like he's doing whistle tone, compressing the hell out of it, and then possibly adding some distortion in the mix. Honestly think it's one of his wildest sounds. Was wondering if you had any idea

I saw your how to sing like Gerard Way video a few months back and was thinking it would be amazing to see you cover the other emo powerhouse from back in the day The Used. I've always been in awe of Bert McCracken's voice it just so unique bright and aggressive, and would love to see it really broken down. It's just so unique!

@@chrisliepe i'm here (late) to second this...it takes balls to try a tenth of what MP does, brother. but it needed to be done, an analysis of michael patton. but what you did here...it's like the vocal equivalent of trying to match jokes/delivery with dave chappelle, in the moment, while facing live AR-15 fire. how could you be comfortable? and credit due, you handled a good amount of it, but i get it...it's not like most of the other singers you've done (and really well). i just can't get past how much MP just SELLS OUT with these crazy mixes of vocal styles and still manages to sound amazing doing it, even when navigating a stage dive and crowd surfing, when it could be forgiven if he mailed it in till he got his feet back under him onstage. i can't even say he's my idol, because from childhood we humans typically try to emulate our idols...nuh uh, not this guy. whole 'nother level.

Think of the "whistle register" as more of a high strained out howl. You can start low by howling like a wolf and working your way up. Dani Filth is a good example in "Nymphetamine".
@docknives3792
@docknives3792 3 года назад
And I mean just for the example he called whistle register, which i know it wasn't hence the quotation marks. Just wanted to clarify, the whistle register requires much more passage of air and a tight closure.

I learned how to sing by being a fan of Rich Little. As a child I used to mimic he’s versions of Impression and from that learning where vocalists sang from. It strange and I’m sure unbelievable that Patton’s singing was easy for me While my other hero was beyond my scope (Chris Cornel) for his upper range. Maynard is easy for me.
