Do you want to learn to sing without breaking? In this video, I give a very effective exercise to practice to help solve this problem. In order to sing with a fully connected voice that doesn't sound like it's changing gears and breaking - we need to develop a strong 'mixed' voice - which is all about using an appropriate amount of both chest and head voice when we sing certain notes.
Practice this exercise to develop a strong mixed voice and sing without breaking
Important! Do NOT push your chest voice up! That results in strain and constriction which is incorrect technique and will only make you sound flat! Instead, let you voice go where it wants to go, even if that feels and sounds weaker, and just keep practicing to develop a stronger sound. Patience is important!

I just found your video, and this is a problem I have had forever!!! I am 56, but love to sing and have accompanied voice teachers for years. So, I know good technique in my head, but haven't really practiced singing. The "break" was so embarrassing, I didn't want to sing. This video finally gives me hope!! Can't wait to keep practicing! Thank you!

Falsetto has a weaker more breathy sound, while a well-trained head voice resonates beautifully and is clear

You're a saint, my singing teachers were never able to even explain so accurately the system of mixed voice, much less actually give me any exercise to develop it, they just left me wondering what it was and up to myself to discover if I should even use it, Jesus... Thank you!

Pure head voice is clear and bell - like. Falsetto is slightly thinner in quality and can be breathy

Thanks - I'm so happy you like my vids and that you're finding them helpful =) In terms of knowing whether or not you are singing in mix, well the first thing is that yes you will feel a good deal of buzzing in the mask, secondly it shouldn't feel strained at all, thirdly it is a sound that travels forward and fourthly it sounds strong yet feel easy on the throat
@KerriHo
@KerriHo 12 лет назад
Fantastic! That's what it should fee like - lots of buzz in the nose! You get less resonance elsewhere because you're no longer in your mixed voice. Mixed voice is characteristically extra resonant especially in the nose. The chest voice resonates in the chest and the head voice in the head - that's why you don't feel it as much when not in your mixed tone

Hard question to answer, as the answer will vary with every person. However in my experience as a vocal coach for 8 years i've seen people generally add at least 1-2 octaves to their range - which the 2 most essential ingredients - 1) a great vocal coach and 2) determination & discipline to practice
@KerriHo
@KerriHo 11 лет назад
That's fantastic! I'm so glad to hear that! Mic technique - well very simply, hold the mic at a 45 degree angel to your lips, like an ice cream cone and sing right into the front/centre of it. Though different mics will give different qualities of sound. My fave is the Shure SM 58 for the best vocal sound
@KerriHo
@KerriHo 11 лет назад
It does take time to develop a good mix - and of course correct technique. If it doesn't feel pushed - that is a great start.
@KerriHo
@KerriHo 11 лет назад
Hi Jeffrey, correct placement always starts with singing in the mask of the face. As you get higher the resonance moves higher.

You are awesome Kerri.. I've been going thru all your videos. and they are very helpful to find my mistakes.. It feels shame to know that i've been using wrong vocal chords all these years which has caused me vocal twist! :( Hopefully i'll come to you for one-to one session in future to improve myself.. I just cant believe how you've uploaded so many useful videos for free!! You are simply GREAT! KEEP IT GOING! :)

Sarah Brightman usually uses head voice. Sierra - depends on what she's singing. For Phantom - it's head voice. For Little Mermaid it's chest belt. I love Sierra Boggess by the way ! =)

Glad my vids are helpful. Yes it is normal to feel tired especially when you first start bc your voice is not used to being stretched. However, if you are using correct technique, it should get better and soon you shouldn't feel tired anymore. If you keep feeling tired, you are likely not using correct technique so be careful

This helped me so much! I am in musical theater for my high school and we're singing "I feel so much spring" from A New Brain for an upcoming performance, this song involves a lot of mixed notes for mostly the alto parts. I'm so happy that with that exercise, I'm already finding it easier to mix. THANK YOU!

Yes if you practice correctly and are guided by a good coach. But it is also important to learn how to apply technique to songs.
@Matt-Q
@Matt-Q 10 лет назад
Dear Kerri I can sing the GOOG, NAY, MUM etc Speech level exercises without any break for some time, But the perennial issue is HOW does one then actually apply these exercises to singing all the time? In an actual performance context, one cannot just forget about technique, start singing, and then try the song again using a GOOG exercise. I tried using each of these vowels for the song but when you start singing the song with vowels and consonants, one tends to lose that sensation that gets your voice connected. This is more so for guys than female singers, I feel. Appreciate your input in this. Thanks!
@KerriHo
@KerriHo 11 лет назад
I understand your frustration Stefano. It often takes a little longer to apply the exercises to a song - bc songs are varied and often the approach may need to be altered slightly - this is where the help of a Coach will really help to pin point exercise how to apply the exercise into a song. But don't give up, keep trying and let me know if you need further help down the track

This is very helpful. I have started singing again after a long break due to illness and really struggling with a very weak place between chest and head where my voice breaks. This is the main area I am working on at the moment, and this exercise is very useful.
@KerriHo
@KerriHo 11 лет назад
It isn't really a different register, it is quite literally as the name suggests, when you mix some of your head voice and some of your chest voice to sing. Quietening the chest voice helps you to put some head into your chest sound

Thank you! I used to think, that when I do these exercises (like gug, goog and so on) I should sing right away with no break. I used to push and pull up my chest like you showed. Now I've realized that we need just to wait the mix will develop and head voice will become stronger. So instead of pulling we should just relax and wait wait wait.

Hi there! It does take time to build stamina and control over the vocal break. The fact that u r getting it on the exercises is already a great step forward, so don't give up. I can't tell you if you are doing it wrong or not without actually hearing you. What I can suggest is if you're still having trouble with it for a long time after this and your're getting frustrated, you can book in a 30 min Skype lesson with me and we can work on that specific song...whatever you do..don't give up!
@R4Z0R98

Its a different setup for the vocal chords. But essentially it sorta feels like falsetto, but with less air leaking. You can also feel a vibrating sensation through your nosepassage and the top of your mouth. Kinda hard to explain, but as my vocal coach instructed me and told me when i was doing it right, i remember the feeling.

Hi ! hmm..ur right without hearing you I can't really say for sure what is happening. However what I do find is often the case is that guys really hate the sound voice of their head voice initially. This could be what it is, that at the moment you are using a lot of head voice in your mix and not liking the sound. You need to learn to eventually put some more chest in it. Watch my How to Belt part 3 video for how to do that
