Join Kathryn, physiotherapist and director at Viva Physiotherapy as she takes you through this short video about how to sit well. As physiotherapists we often have clients coming to ask us about how to improve their posture. It's common for people to seek our help if they have tight muscles in their back or neck, with the most common culprits being upper traps, scalenes, SCM, rhomboids and erector spinae. This can result in longer term back pain, neck pain and headaches.
Many people naturally correct their sitting posture by pulling their shoulders back, or sitting upright through their spine but in our experience, we find that using these muscles leads to fatigue and therefore the slouch coming back quickly.
It is common that people are often told there is a "good" sitting posture and a "bad" sitting posture, but we challenge this notion. We'd argue that the body is made to move, so rather than being in a static position for many hours per day, we should be moving and challenging our bodies to keep active. This helps us to get the benefits of improving your blood flow, using the slow twitch muscles and even tapping into some of the greater cardiovascular benefits that have been described through movement.
