I LOVE you! I modeled my entire technique based on your instruction (right after massage school a few years ago) and have great success because of it! THANK YOU for all you do!
Thank you for reminding us that it’s not being lazy to sit! I have had such a hard time with feeling like I was being lazy for sitting down- I felt like I had to stand for the majority of the session otherwise I was being lazy but you made some great points 👏🏽
Oh my god saaame! People have made me feel lazy for just being a massage therapist anyway. This job can be very stressful and demanding. I wish more people knew that.
I started sitting more within my first 6 mos of doing massage. ( 4 yrs now) I sit for neck, shoulder, peck, arms, hands, feet and some scap and back as well. I'd say a total of 30 mins in each session.
Very happy you explore this topic! Call it lazy if you like, but the more you take care of your body, the better it is for everyone... and if you can be just as, if not more effective sitting than standing then it's a no-brainer! Great stuff :)
Love the point about monotony …not even something I ever even thought about before with massage and it’s such a good thing to think of. Keep the same general massage style your client likes but switching it up just a bit here and there to keep it feeling different and new. Love it. 👍
Love this! I used to do this alot more when doing heavier hours in spas especially when working the lower legs supine you can get great deep work done on the gravity induced relaxed calves. Thanks for the reminder thats not lazy to take a seat for parts of massage sessiom !
Watching the video after a long wonderful work day. Falling asleep with Ian's soothing voice and slothlike touch. Been my inspiration since I was in school.
Thanks so much..I have bi lateral hip bursitis from a car accident 2yrs ago and during my flare ups and long days of sessions..I am definitely wearing my pain before the day is done. Saddle stool here I come!! Love your videos..voice and sharing🦋 CEO of La'Chi Massage. Been in business One year🎉I work solo so sitting when I can is needed. Don't want to burnout😵🔥
English is not my mother tongue, but the way you speak and pronounce makes it very easy for me to fully understand what you are saying - thank you for your efforts and your soothing voice
Hi Ian, I really love your videos and techniques :) Would you please consider making a video showing some tips for a smaller person to effectively massage a very large and tall athletic figured male? Thanks for all of your videos!
This... is such a good idea. I could do some videos where someone else applies the techniques, and we talk through how to make things work best for their body. Thanks for this!
When I was in massage school I ask way said a full body seating massage was my dream 😂 never really done it but as I started doing prenatal and do the whole leg supine I do seat down because is easier in my back.
Right on! And hey, consider joining us on the forum (search "massage sloth clubhouse" on facebook) and feel free to post if you'd like some support. Congrats!
Too much of anything, is by definition, too much! I like this video. it made me think. My next client is gonna get a more laid back Mike! Thanks as ever.
Absolutely! I do a lot of concentrated work on the neck, head, traps, levator scapula, and subscap I also sit down if I'm trying to work on the lateral glutes, ITB, feet, and even peroneus longus if it's really given them a hard time. Several years ago I figured out how much easier it was to sit while massage someone is the sideline position. Pretty much if I feel like I'm about to do the splits I sit down... I enjoyed the video, definitely some good ideas haven't thought of. Thanks!
I had a massage instructor that told us to never sit during a massage. I was thinking what? Now that I’m in my late 40’s I sit out of necessity and honestly I give a better massage.
Busting out my spare rolly stool. Thank you for this reminder. I have been doing as much as possible with my eyes closed which really self corrects posture well but gravity is a thing and sitting offers more ease.
@@capitana4719 it's a excellent way to slooow down and instead of looking down the head automatically lifts. Another perk is my facial muscles relax because I am not processing images. All sorts of things I notice if I just remember to practice. Will organize my thoughts and finally make a video like Ian has been kindly nudging at for years, ha!
@@MassageSloth fence sitter here! 👋 ha!!! I know, I know. I just finished a massage where I sat most of the time with eyes closed, my person didn't stand a chance to stay awake. 🤭 I used a light stool without wheels so it is even quieter that my rolly one. Felt more steady.
I thought I was alone in closing my eyes! I am always afraid my clients will open their eyes and see me closing my eyes and think that I'm not really doing my job. 😅
Good question! More toward the shoulder, but knees straight-on (and splayed to either side) would be good for scooping that lateral tissue posteriorly.
I like a nice rolling stool, but I do sometimes have to put my knees slightly under the table to brace myself and avoid pushing myself away from the client :)
Ah! My secret there is to sometimes wedge one or both knees under the table. It also helps to have your chair set low so that your feet are firmly on the ground (and if your chair doesn't go low enough, look for one that does!)
