Question: How to slow graying of hairs and potentially reverse it?
Short Answer: What works for any given individual will likely be to find the weakest link and fix it, from among the following systems: the signaling of energy abundance (body fat, insulin sensitivity, thyroid hormone, adequate protein, individualized meeting of carbohydrate needs, good management of psychosocial stress, supporting neuroendocrine signaling with copper, vitamin C, zinc, and glycine, and supporting thyroid function with iodine and selenium); the biochemical infrastructure of energy production (all the B vitamins, iron, copper, sulfur, magnesium, potassium, and managing genetic idiosyncrasies impacting energy metabolism), and antioxidant protection (protein, vitamin C, vitamin E, zinc, copper, selenium, iron, and manganese).

I also think that radiation (XRAYs and such) play a role. Interesting to watch many on SSRI's turn grey/white hair to yellow and possibly blonde. Seen that many times in clients I track. Dopamine agonists taken orally have also been shown to restore hair color in some cases. Anything that inhibits tryptophan absorption from diet should also help, so aspirin, glycine, BCAA, etc should help a lot. Fun topic for sure.

Gray hair sure is a quandary to say the least. My 72yr old father and 68yr old mother both have less gray hair than I do at 38. I'd call their lifestyles by far less healthy than mine. My father in particular has very little gray hair, it's basically a full head of brown hair, he may have had his first grays at 65 if I was to guess. I *think* I've slowed mine down some by getting a much more nutrient rich diet in the last 2 years, but sure wish I could figure out how to reverse it. Once in awhile I'll notice one of the hairs on my face will switch between white then brown, then shortly after switch back to white again, kind of frustrating.

Perhaps your belief of what constitutes a "healthy lifestyle" is wrong and your father and mother is more harmonious?

About 6 months ago, I began taking a supplement stack that has been turning my gray hair darker. The supplement stack is glycine NAC (glyNAC) and edlerberry extract (10:1) for cyanidine (SRIT6 activation).

i used to take more than 100mg (up to 175mg/200mg sometimes) of zinc per day as a teen for acne and got gray hair on the sides of my head the gray hair mostly went away / reverted back to light brown when i stopped the zinc overload in my mid 20s i'm 43 now and have a bit more grays on the sides and a little on the lower part of my beard growth (if i dont shave for a few days) i have been taking NOW NAC 600mg with selenium & molybdenum religiously since february of this year and haven't noticed any newer gray hairs - but the NAC hasn't reversed any of the existing gray hair

Copper is known to reverse graying

Summary: - Graying of hair is influenced by both genetic and environmental factors. - The neuroendocrine system plays a role in regulating hair pigment production. - Factors such as growth factors, inflammatory mediators, and circadian rhythm can impact hair pigmentation. - Nutrients like vitamin C, copper, zinc, and glycine are involved in hair pigment production. - Thyroid hormone production depends on iodine, selenium, calorie intake, body fat, and macronutrient balance. - Carbohydrates play a role in signaling energy abundance and supporting thyroid hormone production. - Hair graying is linked to oxidative damage and is not just an age-related issue. - There is a connection between gray hair and conditions like Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and cardiovascular disease. - Current treatments for gray hair are limited and often inconclusive. - The author suggests focusing on factors like antioxidant support, energy metabolism, and neuroendocrine signaling to address premature graying.

the latest science seems to point at excess noradrenaline production. From my own anecdotal experience i find the laziest people around me to have the least gray hair.
@nootri

I'm not getting this. Noradrenaline plays a role in enhancing alertness, concentration, and cognitive function. How does that correlate with laziness?

Not lazy just low thyroid which is known for dark hair, my grandmother had mostly black hair

For me copper and tyrosine are very good for that. I haven’t finished listening, so maybe he brought that up… (Plus copper, with combo of tyrosine and pregnenolone raise dopamine…if you want you can look that up, def don’t trust random ppl on the internet🤔)

I am unsure about the carbohydrate recommendations, for many, a lower carbohydrate diet can be extremely anti inflammatory and support better metabolic health particularly when it focuses on wholefood,, fibre rich vegetables, quality protein and omega 3 rich food, olives, avocado, nuts and seeds etc.
@hairpigmentcenter
@hairpigmentcenter Год назад
Carbohydrate reduction is associated with hair thinning. It could be due to generalized reduction in calories that doesn’t get offset by increasing protein consumption. As Chris explained, antioxidants like VitC have a role and what’s the first thing most people who go on a low carbohydrate diet do? Eliminate fruits/veggies which for many are the only source of VitC.
@littlevoice_11
@littlevoice_11 Год назад
@hairpigmentcenter low carb can still be high in vegetables (excluding potatoes) and lower sugar fruit such as any berry, plus high in protein should negate the risks of hair thinning. As you said, thinning hair and low carb is an "association" rather than low carb causing hair loss. Energy balance is obviously important as is quality of nutrition. Thanks for sharing your thoughts though. It's interesting to hear your perspective.

Hi Chris what do you think about folinic acid for people with MTHFR and whats the difference between folinic acid and methylfolate roles and also i seen that those form can convert into each other so how is it true and how efficent is this conversion?
@chrismasterjohn
@chrismasterjohn Год назад
Shouldn’t matter in most, folinic for anemia, methyl for methylation, Walsh says folinic gets into brain better but I don’t know where it comes from.

Hello Dr Masterjohn. My stool test revealed elevated methanogenic archaea and gut dysbiosis, seemingly every vegetable and plant food exacerbates irritable bowel symptomology namely , constipation, bloating , halitosis , etc. I hadn’t experienced this prior,in the past I ate a diet consisting of animal protein (red meat, chicken, fish eggs some rice and small portions of legumes eliminating most grains gluten and dairy) I had diarrhea most days and it subsided after herbal antibiotic usage but then upon following a vegan diet and supplementing with human milk oligosaccharides and other probiotics I seem to have permanent constipation which hinders my sleep greatly Herbal antibiotics , Allicin , abstaining from common food allergens and fasting do not alleviate my symptoms, the prospect of embarking on a carnivore diet frightens me because on the one hand it may be necessary for the short term but comes with obvious risks such as deficiencies

@chrismasterjohn Год назад
You just told me your health was better on carnivore and got terrible after going vegan and that now you are afraid of carnivore because it might hurt your health. Start with what you know works. Think about the rest later.
@Yt1925jn
@Yt1925jn Год назад
@@chrismasterjohnit wasn’t carnivore simply a more meat centered diet with fruits rice and some legumes. I had dsily diarrhea now on a plant centered diet it’s switched to constipation , i never had consistent healthy stools on any diet. I tried a low FODMAP diet recently with more animal protein and it hasn’t improved

If you don't eat enough carbohydrate you increase cortisol and adrenaline production and overall stress on the body which causes premature greying.

Grey hair has melanin, white hair does not have any melanin, usually a genetic component. I am Chris's mom, with the white hair at 14 years old, my aunt, my mother's sister had beautiful white hair at the age of 38. I was totally white somewhere about 38 - 40 years old. I was a brunette prior to that.
