In this video I'm snowboarding on a steep run on Blackcomb mountain and I've got a few tips to help you snowboard down steep runs as well. I'll take you through all the advice I've used over the years to help snowboarders get down their first steep double black. These runs can be scary to snowboard down but with a few simple tips you can ride these runs comfortably. If you have any questions about steep double black snowboarding you can leave them in the comments. Thanks for watching!

The lean forward tip is really helpful. I always find myself leaning back. Also, leaning into each turn with your whole body is vital. Thank you for this vid 🙌

1. Stay on toe edge when possible 2. Emphasize front foot if it's not deep pow 3. Align your body to the slope as much as possible 4. Try to feel your edge and make sure you are right on top of it 5. Prepare for bumps 6. Understand that you will fall a lot if it's essentially steep mogul run 7. Get more comfortable with speed

Great advice! Yeah I think with the heel edge - plenty of people have their bindings setup so their boots are over the edge, so if you're on a steep slope and lean back, high edge angle, you're quickly riding on your boots literally, aka spill city. On the toe edge your edge angle can be much higher, better balance - even if you have a wide enough deck to get a good heel edge without boots or bindings touching the snow, ice and crud snow make it even worse. Love the Whistler content, my favorite place to ride for sure! Hope you're all doing well out there!

Nice video and great tips. I'm an east coast AASI snowboard instructor. I would also like to add for anyone reading these comments for tips to try retracting or unweighting the board by flexing your ankles, knees, and hips right when you release each edge and pivot to the new edge. This helps change edges quickly with a lot of balance. Once on the new edge slowly extend your ankles, knees, and hips to control that edge and check speed. We call the turns in this video "leapers" because you rise up and hop at edge changes. That's a good technique too, but may not be the best for all steeps. Hope this helps some of you out there!

Tips are on the money and perfectly in line with what you’d get on a private lesson. Would have been better had someone else filmed the riding though, and here’s why: Jump turns, although they feel safe, are something you want to get away from if you really want to ride 2X blacks like a boss. Learn to commit to each turn and ride them out to develop flow rather than constantly starting and stopping with jump turns. I couldn’t imagine trying to film myself using proper turns though. They are challenging enough without a selfie-stick in hand!

@ryanward5770
@ryanward5770 3 года назад
Imo it's most fun to ride the level that you can do well. If you can run blues super well and fly down them but you're slow when going down blacks then blues are more fun. Blacks will make you better though so its important to do both. Eventually you will be as comfortable on blacks as you were on blues and then progress that onto double blacks

@phildinovo
@phildinovo 3 года назад
Depends on the “bumps”. If they’re defined moguls, you need to plan your turns to follow the lines through the moguls, quickly alternating directions a lot. If it’s bumpy because it’s hard pack, you can still follow this advice but you need to keep your knees loose enough on the turns to absorb the terrain.

The different levels of double blacks can very depending on the skill level of the park itself, the one in the video is a dub black cause of the rocks and small drops shown at the beginning
@kuanhau4323
@kuanhau4323 3 года назад
Would be good to explain that toe sliding the start isn’t good to do often because it creates ruts for people who want to take their riding to the next stage and do it with flow. It can also cause icy patches making it more difficult and potentially more dangerous for those after you. Best practice on a groomed track the movements then take it into the db. Showing the next step of how to enter the db with flow would be a good target for people to aim for as the ideal

What are your thoughts on traditionally waxing your board versus using DPS Phantom Wax 2.0? I just found out about this stuff but I'm not too sure about it.
@richc4157
@richc4157 3 года назад
I got the phantom 2.0 applied by mec 2 seasons ago and it is still working great. I think it is slightly more sticky than a super fresh wax when just standing i.e in the lift line, on wet spring snow - but barely noticeable. On the run it is fast and feels like the second or third day on a fresh wax. Basically its great so far even in spring conditions, saves time and money if you usually drop your board off to get tuned/waxed and avoids ever having that cats tongue stickiness of spring snow on an unwaxed board. I'm now working on sharpening my own edges so I never have to worry about shop tuning again. If I get another board I will definitely phantom again.

another tip, before going anywhere near the really steep stuff practice going toe to heel back and forth with your weight forward pivoting on that nose, I've seen way too many people try steep trails when they can't do that basic move and it is essential to being able to stay in control.
@kuanhau4323

Lol what happens if you just go straight down without turning?
@pocketdog8382
@pocketdog8382 3 года назад
I think the #1 mistake is when boarders go on runs that are too steep for their ability. They get too scared to commit to a turn (because it is scary) and they end up plowing straight down the hill on their heal edge thereby ruining the trail for others (I wish parents would instill this early with their learning children). If you do end up in this scenario and really can't make a turn then at a minimum you can zig zag/carve from one side of the trail to the other on the toe side edge (i.e. go regular to one side then switch to the other) You will have lots of control, won't get going too fast and you will leave some snow for others to enjoy. Then try a turn here and there when you feel it is safe.
@cccEngineer

Gotta remember though a lot of times it's impossible to know just how hard it is until you get to the steep part.

You suggested being more on your toe side than on your heels, but unless you switch legs at some point, doesn't it end up being close to 50/50 toe/heel?
@spotless008
@spotless008 3 года назад
@SuzN correct me if I'm wrong..but he was saying on black trails only try to spend more time on your toes than on heels (unlike the usual goal of 50:50 times) because you do have more control on your toes when the trail is so vertical (black)..And spending more time on your toes is as possible as spending more time on your heels (which most people who are learning do, they spend more time on their heels).. If you want to spend more time on toes, that just means to have longer lines (diagonal or similar) on your toes and more brief shorter lines on heels.. totally doable
@spotless008
@spotless008 3 года назад
Ron.. just do longer diagonal lines on your toes when on black trails..then it won't be 50:50
