Thank so much Belinda.....what is the highest hlb value the liquid emulsifier can have?
@theinstituteofpersonalcare6401
@theinstituteofpersonalcare6401 3 года назад
20 is the maximum in the HLB system, but emulsifiers usually max out at 16 - even at 16 they are more solubilisers than emulsifiers; and above 16 they start to foam too much to be emulsifiers (they are then surfactants). You can learn more with us, check out our Diploma training here: personalcarescience.com.au/CosmeticScience/DiplomaofPersonalCareFormulation-479/

Thank you for the answer. I realize that I made the question a bit open ended and without context,let me rephrase. I'm looking to find a substitution for aracel as it isn't available in my country. However we have a number of other liquid w/o emulsifiers ranging from 3-9. In your experience, what would be the highest hlb value an emulsifier can have to solubilize the extracts in oil?......Or do I stick with the ones in the 8-9 region of not really w/o or o/w?

It's not to add plain water. It's to add a water soluble ingredients, such as an extract. It would normally not disperse into oil without staying separate. This way, it incorporates. It's a way to mix a bit of something water-based into an oil without creating a full on emulsion like a lotion.

Hi Belinda, I have a query. I’m hoping to create a oil to put on the scalp for the intention of assisting hair growth with 4% Rosemary oil. (As it’s said Rosemary is very beneficial for it) However, I’ve added to the following carriers: Jojoba oil - far too oily. Clumps the hair together with a greasy look, making the hair appear sparse. Grape seed oil - it’s said it’s the least greasiest of any oil.. it turns out a bit better, but same story. (And I do not put a lot… say for eg, short quiff-style hair… I’ll put about 4 drops on the crown area and massage in… Any point in time later, if I touch the hair in the area, you can see the high sheen - look on the fingers. What options do I have? I was hoping to make it less-viscous/ less-greasy. What gave me the idea is that I’ve added 4% rosemary oil to these pre-made ‘rosemary scalp oils’ on eBay (god knows what’s really in there) but it dries up leaving no residue. Maybe there’s a way to create something similar at home?

A solubiliser helps you solubilise an immiscible substance in another - for example, solubilise oil in water, or the other way around.
