DISCLAIMER: if parents are affected, the condition could be dominant or recessive. If multiple generations are affected vertically, it's most likely a dominant trait. If it skips generations, it's most likely recessive.

This is literally life-saving but I applied this technique to a question & got it wrong because it was following a multifactorial inheritance pattern. So, beware of that! Btw let me mentions some diseases following multifactorial inheritance pattern. Spina Bifida, Cleft lip Cleft palate, Diabetes, Hypertension, CAD, etc.

Thank you! Yep this method only works for mendelian inheritance

The diagram on the right could represent either a Dominant or Recessive condition. For example, consider a condition with alleles B and b. If it's a recessive condition, then all bb individuals will display the trait, and BB or Bb individuals will not display the condition. The diagram on the right could be for a recessive condition. In this case the mother would be bb (thus displaying the trait) and the father would be Bb (and therefore not displaying the trait). Their children, by necessity, will be either bb (displaying the trait) or Bb (not displaying the trait). So you cannot rule out the diagram on the right representing a recessive trait.

If parents are affected it does not always mean its dominant.. Maybe parent was affected because he/she had two Recessive alleles .. Correct me if I am wrong anywhere

I don't believe this is entirely correct. You can have parents that are affected and it still be a recessive inheritance pattern. So am I Missing something here?
@Lauren-te9xh

I thought the same thing. If a parent is heterozygous for a trait, it can still be recessive inheritance pattern. Can someone please explain?
@Annie-uq1md

@@Lauren-te9xhif the disease in recessive and the parent is heterozygous it wont be affected . Recessive rule unaffected parents can have affected children.

If skipping of generation occurs then it is recessive , if all the generations are affected then it is dominant

I think she is correct, and that all of the exceptions to this (for example: some mitochondrial disease) will be made super obvious by the question

Hi Noor. Thanks for helping out with this. Please can you give more tips to easily identify if a disorder is autosomal recessive/dominant or x-link or mitochondria?
@acingmedicine
@acingmedicine 3 года назад
Structural problems is mostly autosomal dominant e.g Achondroplasia Functional problems (e.g enzyme deficiency) is mostly Autosomal recessive The X linked are a couple of well known disorders u just memorize (e.g hemophilia) Mitochondrial pedigrees are known by maternal transmission only from mother to both her offspring (boys and girls) and the girls pass it to their offspring (boys and girls) but no male passes it one. There’s only 2 well known entities with mitochondrial disorders. The most commonly tested is muscular (ragged red fibers in a patient presenting with seizures). The other is Leber Hereditary optic neuropathy

Wrong for several reasons. Paired recessive genes can present in the phenotype. Genes and epigenetics may be present or introduced which mitigate expession . Mutations can and do occur. Genes may render one predisposed to develop issues which never get presented , such as passing away before a development occurs (like... male pattern baldness in teens , telomere reduction etc. )
