BG108 - Using Deoxit D5 to cure one of the most common turntable problems we run across. The pitch just won't sync up or settle down. We have seen hundreds of units like this over the years and as they get older, more and more are susceptible.

I can't thank you enough for this. As a visual learner, this was 1000 times easier to understand and feel comfortable doing than all the written tutorials I have read online. Thank you thank you thank you.

I was told my table couldn’t be fixed so I watched a video and now it’s working great yeah thanks a lot the guy told me I could give them my table parts and he would give me a few bucks for it. i’ll just tell him I’ll be using it for parts. For parts of my album collection. Works better than ever. So happy. I love my Sanyo plus 50.

Bob Gauthier Whenever I have a problem with a stereo item, I always search RU-vid to see if I can find a cure for it online. I never, never go to a repair shop. They are bloodsuckers and will rip you off if you don’t know what the problem is yourself, and you just aren’t sure how to fix it. Don’t let them get over on you.

You just saved me over $100. My Marantz 6200 turntable was not working right. Wouldn't hold speed at all...the 45 was worse than the 33rpm...but I did exactly as the video shows and now it works great. Seriously, A huge sincere thank you. You rock!

As always, thanks for the tips Mark.....and all your great videos. I'm a fan! PS - I'm also a Deoxit fan, 'cause it works! I have a note for all of you out there (most of you already know this) regarding the use of WD40 or any similar product intended to be used a a penetration fluid/lubricant on electronic gear....don't do it! There are other products that can be used in place of deoxit, but penetrating oil is NOT on the list....what a mess!

I have not even watched, but the most common problem I have found with old turntables or changers is congealed grease in the motor shaft. While adding lubrication sometimes provides a temporary solution, the real solution is to disassemble the motor and REMOVE all of the bad grease with a solvent and then add new lubrication to the shafts and bearings. I just watched and see this is about pitch adjust, but it sort of appears to be a commercial for Deoxit. There are many other products that can do this.

If you don't have deoxit, you can take your parts and put them in a shot glass of acetic acid (distilled vinegar) for a few minutes to etch away the oxides. Vinegar is about 95% water though which means it will promote further oxidation, so as soon as you've finished soaking/turning the pot you'll want to spray it full of wd-40 to displace the water. Bit more involved than just the one spray, but it works in a pinch. It's how I ended up restoring a bunch of unreliable key switches.

I have the same turntable shown at the very beginning of the video, the Technics SL1500; i had also the same issue, but even adding deoxidant to those potentiometers didn't help. I had to move my attention to the speed selector/power switch and after adding a bit of deoxidant it worked

Support those with skills, knowledge and experience - take it to a technician. This is one item (and only a quick fix, not a solution) from a 12 point check-list on what should be performed as a full service and calibration on this model..as these SL1000s models from this era are worth THOROUGHLY servicing and calibrating. They will continue with perfect speed for decades to come, when given correct care, not quick fixes.

Deoxit D5 and Deoxit Faderlube lubricant have become very expensive and hard to find other than ordering online. Around $25 to $30 for both cans. I've had good luck with CRC QD contact cleaner. For lubricant, follow up with CRC 2-26. Both cans cost about $10 total at home depot.

Very good video! Clear instruction! Cleaned my pots as shown here, but my speed control is nearly maxed out. Is that good? Or can I make some additional adjustment?
@kehdepermit
@kehdepermit 2 года назад
On my SL 1200 there is a 2nd set of speed adjustment screws you can access from the top after removing the platter. One marked 33 and the other 45, you can see two white slot screws through holes in the case that go down into that green circuit board. If adjusting those don't help they also may be dirty and you can spray them as well. Just remove the bottom cover and flip the circuit board which is held in place by 4 phillips screws and give them a couple blasts of deoxit.

Subscribed, video was just what I was looking for, ordered some DeOxit D5. Hope it works. I just bought a Technics SL-D3 that has a single pitch adjustment wheel; does that get sprayed the same as the regular knob? Is it possible to spray through the crevices on the top without taking the bottom off? Should I also spray the 33/45 speed slider switch? Thanks!

Mine has the little wheel as well. And wondering if i can spray it from the top or take off the bottom. Seeing you posted this a year ago what worked for you??? Ordering some spray now because my MCS (Technics)pitch just jumps around like a hot potato now. So frustrating.

Hey, had to scratch my head as to what finally worked, my pitch jumped around too. But I never did spray it with anything . . . I discovered that if I fiddled around with it for 10 minutes or so that I finally found that VERY elusive sweet spot, which has stayed there since I set it. Grab a chair, sit close and try it . . .@@geddhead1971

might be worth mentioning that if you do get a lock on the speed at first and then it drifts back out, thats more likely to be bad caps on the motor speed control board. (for anyone that this video didnt help)

Agree that's the issue I have with my SL-1500 and when I was in college this was the most common problem (the caps) with these turntables. So I would say that the 95% rate attested to in the video is a bit high ;) Don't get me wrong, I use Deoxit, their Pro Gold and Cal-lube as well. Fine products but not cure-alls.

So ironic. I made a similar video myself and just revisited it last night. Now, I still have issues with the built-in RCA cables. I'm wondering if it would be possible to modify it and put in RCA jacks to use any set of cables. And maybe some ground lug to use any wire instead of any of the integrated wires.
@alexreeve
@alexreeve 7 лет назад
The phono signal is only around 3 mV or so, with every connector you add resistance and risk losing your signal. Thats why most turntables have the fixed wires... i wouldnt recommend the extra jacks, unless you have something like an integrated phono preamp that puts out "line level" (around 750 mV)

Faderlube should be used for the regular potentiometers as well. D5 does not contain lubricants so will dry out not long after application, and the lack of lubricant will increase wear on the carbon track as the wiper passes over it. It is always good to flush with D5 first though.

Any reason to use DN5S instead of D5? I heard that for NES (Nintendo 8 bit) cartridges DN5S quick drying is better option.. would the DN5S would similar to the D5 for A/V uses though? I'm trying to see if I need F5, DN5S, AND D5, or can get away with just F5 and DN5S.. for turntable and mixer faders, NES game carts, audio connectors and knobs/dials on audio equipment..

Lots of possibilities; does your receiver have a dedicated phono input (has extra Gain, and special EQ)? Otherwise, you need a seperate black box phono preamp (theyre cheap), or a recent-manufacture turntable with a phono preamp built in (typically switchable in or out of circuit). Other possibilities: defective phono cartridge. Phono cartridge improperly wired into the headshell , I see this at work all the time. Or, a magnetic cartridge installed in the turntable, but the phono input on your amplifier unit is designed only for a ceramic cartridge (which has much much higher output electrically, but lousy audio quality). Oxidized, tarnished contacts between headshell and tonearm. Bad phono cables coming out of the turntable. Bad RCA plugs on the end of the phono cables. Bad jacks or broken connections on the jacks you are plugging into . Defective phono preamp inside your receiver or amp.

Wrong! You use D5 on conducting carbon-tracks and F5 on metal to metal. Better practice is to disassemble the pot and spray the F5 onto a quetip. In that way you won't make such a mess and use less of the already pricy Deoxit. AND, it will be more thouroughly cleaned. O, and a handy tip D5=carbon-tracks, F5 Metal-metal (Ferrous)

Hi, just a warning for those using D5 who might stumble upon this video. It turns out that D5 is intended for use with metal-only pots, and will destroy carbon pots like those in many consumer products. It may work great for a while, but after a time it will eat the carbon alive.

WD-40's is a moisture displacer, it leaves behind a light oil to keep moisture out. This oil attracts dirt, so not such a good idea, not going to as good a job of removing the oxidation, and going to store up a world of trouble down the line. Yes there are other contact cleaners out there, but WD-40 is not one of them, and stated this is a competition entry and thus needs to be about a product relevant to the competition, there was full disclosure. John, are you in fact that green idiot we see at the end of some of Techmoan's videos?
@alexreeve
@alexreeve 7 лет назад
John, WD40 makes it even worse. I get so many devices with failed potentiometers or faders, because people were thinking exactly that. There are just a few products that are suitable for this job, and deoxit is one that works. thats it. You can buy other brands but dont negative-comment when you are actually totally wrong...
