No one has posted a video on how to solve this and I would have really loved to watch a video before struggling with it. That's why it's here. To play one for free, click on this link www.passionforp...
Chapter Selection, click on time to advance.
Intro: 0:00 to 2:20
Solve #'s 1-16: 2:21 to 5:35
Algorithms 1 and 2: 5:36 to 8:21
Solve #'s 16 thru 20: 8:22 to 14:20
Tips on moving a piece 1,2,3, or 4 spots: 14:21
Sample Solve: 17:23 to end
Algorithm #1 (L,R,L) to move any piece 4 spots to the right without disrupting the other pieces:
Place piece in left side of Flipper...
Flip, then all pieces move one spot left.
Flip, then all pieces move one spot right.
Flip, then all pieces move one spot left.
Algorithm #2. To move any piece (R,L,R) 4 spots left without disrupting the order:
Flip, then all pieces move one spot right.
Flip, then all pieces move one spot left.
Flip, then all pieces move one spot right.
To move any piece 1 spot right without disrupting order:
Apply algorithm 1, Then move all pieces 3 spots left, then repeat 4 more times.
To move any piece 1 spot left without disrupting order:
Apply algorithm 2, Then move all pieces 3 spots right, then repeat 4 more times.

Thanks for the moving one space at a time. That was really helpful!

I saw it! You helped me finish that pesky one piece off mixup at the end

I found mine at a thrift shop, At first I had no idea on how to solve it, Then I got the concept, Pull 4 numbers in the rotary piece rotate and push one number out one by one till they are back in order.

I've noticed a few things about solving the last four pieces. It can always be solved by using the algo (that moves one piece to the left or right one position) a maximum of three times. Of the 24 possible combinations, 1 is solved, 3 need to use the algo one time, 5 need to use the algo twice, 6 need to use it three times, 5 need to use it four times, 3 need to use it five times, and 1 needs to use it six times. However, any combination and its inversion (flipped around) always requires a total of six algos. So a 4 inverts to 2, 5 inverts to 1, etc. Using that fact, the solution reduces to: 2 are solved, 6 need to use the algo one time, 10 need to use the algo twice, and 6 need to use it three times. More later.

bausin>> 2 are solved, 6 need to use the algo one time, 10 need to use the algo twice, and 6 need to use it three times. So, since that algo requires 40 moves, 6 combos take 40 moves, 10 take 80 moves, and 6 need 120 moves to solve. I have not found any way to solve the case where a single piece has to move one position in less than 40 moves. However, all cases that would take 80 moves can be done in 16 or 18 moves. There is a 16 move pattern that swaps both pairs in the turnstile and 2 18 move patterns that rotate 3 adjacent pieces either left or right. Finally, the cases that would require 120 moves can all be solved with the single piece algo and the Rotate-3 move in a total of 58 moves. This changes the average number of moves to solve from 79 to 35; at the expense of memorizing 3 more patterns and some more work in recognizing the patterns needed.

I was able to get 1-17 on my own (16 and 17 were together by chance) but couldn't get the last 4 on my own. Thanks!

Nice video. Why do you say (2:50) you can make it 4 closer/farther away from "8" by rotating the wheel when it actually is moving it 3 closer/farther away?
@instantpestering
@instantpestering 9 лет назад
bausin Not if you count the original position as one.
@bausin
@bausin 9 лет назад
instantpestering It doesn't matter. You're talking about how far "9" is from "8". Before the flip, it is 7 away and after the flip it is 4 away. If you wanted to count 8 as one (why?) it would start 8 away and end up 5 away. In both cases, the difference is 3. Also, the four away argument is not consistent with what you say in the next sentence when you're talking about moving a piece one position closer/farther away.

i thought this was pretty funny. my wife has had this thing for like 20 years and is terrible at puzzles. i on the other had am normally pretty good at them but despite trying this several times over the years i always got to where everything is correct except the last two numbers are inverted. flash forward. my 5 year old son finds it and jumbles it all up. he asks me to solve it. i warn him i probably will not be able to and search up this video. i get 3:48 seconds in and solved it by myself with my son sitting right next to me.
