Are you a rock guitar player who’s always been fascinated by the techniques of country guitarists? In today’s video I’m going to show you three techniques/melodic ideas that are used by country players all the time, that you can start implementing into your own playing.
These techniques include the most famous of all (when it comes to country playing…), and that is… chicken pickin’! Also known as hybrid picking, this technique combines picked notes with plucked notes using your ring and middle fingers. Chicken pickin’ gives you a percussive, snappy and TWANGY sound that is perfect country licks and solos.
We’re also taking a look at how country players use 6th’s in their lead playing, as well as a technique commonly known as ‘fake pedal steel bends’. The latter is something that we electric guitar players can use to mimic the sound of a real pedal steel guitar.
As mentioned in the video, here’s a bunch of links to some truly mind-blowing country guitar performances:

+1 on quoting Steve Morse! The C&W track on his Southern Steel album is my favourite (or is it the one on Coast To Coast?), Southern Steel is shamefully off most people's music radar somehow - instrumental super-muso rock that's more heavy Blues and hard rock than its contemporary releases Surfing With The Alien or Passion And Warfare. Also, just like Dave Edmunds, on Sweet Little Lisa, Morse has also collaborated with Albert Lee - check out General Lee on Steve Morse's solo album The Introduction. If you can go toe to toe with Albert Lee on country guitar....you're no pantywaist! Yours, a Steve Morse fanboy Lol

For some reason, when I started taking guitar lessons (primarily for rock, like Ross) I strongly avoided hybrid picking because I thought it’d take away from my style or something. Instead, the more I practice years later, the more I tend to prefer hybrid picking! To me, it’s more ergonomic, dynamic, and expressive. Thanks for another great lesson!

I am not sure if chicken picking (CP) and hybrid picking (HP) are the same as you mention at 2:48. CP refered to the "clucking" sound produced by employing appropriate muting and percussive techniques. In other words "clunking" sound could also be produced eg, with just a flat pick. HP refers to use of more than one "item" in striking strings, eg flat pick, thumb and finger picks, fingers, etc. Employing HP doesn't necessarily result into the "clunking" sound unless aforementioned techniques are employed.

I can't quite see your fingernails but are you growing them for hybrid picking? I'm actually working on hybrid picking and found myself accidentally doing it instead of just using a plectrum the other day. I'm working through a hybrid picking book at the moment. I have started growing my right hand nails but that will interfere with my lifestyle post-plague. I can use just my fingertips but I need the volume up for that. Do you have any observations?
@RossCampbellGuitarist

Great lesson, man. I've been into the country bag since I first heard Steve Morse on the Dixie Dregs album What If. There is a dude named Doug Seven, he has some great lessons and licks available. I always liked the left field country players like Greg Koch. He is a beast of everything (like Steve Morse). Greg has some great lessons online and he's a funny dude. Here's Greg completely owning it, it starts off killer and he just blisters it: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Hf2pIHe0Drc.html His ideas are super complex.
