It’s always pretty refreshing to see that someone’s tone is almost completely in their fingers, while also being a fairly accessible tone at the same time. Hardly any of us are as good as joe dart, but his tone isn’t too difficult to replicate. Not to take away from the video though! Really really liked the tone of that mustang bass at the start!

Completely agree! It's a good reminder to spend more time practicing than worrying about gear. Good tone follows good playing.

If you want to hit those 16th notes like the Monster of Michigan, then you should pluck precisely and emphasize each quarter note. this allows you to stay in time, in tune, funky, and low volume.

with cory wong's neural dsp, you can go to presets ==> factory ==> cory wong ==> bass tones ==> j bass. Then, in the plugin's graphic equalizer you must increase the mids (250 Hz to 1 Khz) and progressively decrease from 2 KHz. In the pedals section, in the compressor, raise the compression parameter to the maximum and the blend too (although you can adjust here to taste, it depends on your bass and your technique). Everything else I leave as is the preset that I mentioned at the beginning. The tone, at least for me, is very similar, and I connect directly to a scarlett focusrite. I have a MiM jazz bass player. The neck pickup at 0, and the tone also at minimum, I only use the bridge pickup.

That's a solid effort. There's a lack of clarity and attack on the notes though, you can hear the top end clicky sound on Joe's part, which is absent from yours. But the rest of it is pretty spot on!

This should have been a 30 second video of how to use compression, because that's the most central aspect to Joe's tone and also the reason why this doesn't sound exactly like it.

Just stumbled across your channel (thanks, algorithm!) and I'm already 4 "how to sound like" videos deep. These vids are super-informative and get the ol' brain percolating! I'm only a recreational bass player, but if I'm playing a song with a unique or notable bass tone, I like to get close. A multi-effect unit like that seems like a good way to do it - especially for live situations where one might have to go from "Sunshine of Your Love" immediately to "All Right Now".

Joe's sunglasses of choice are from a brand called Knockarounds - because they are cheaper and more durable Tone wise, you're a bit too fuzzy/dirty on that dean town line. Also Joe's attack is much stronger and a bit brighter. And his tone is more punchy and nasal-y I guess than super full and bassy

@peadookie
@peadookie 3 года назад
Absolutely. This will get you 60% of the way there on basically every bass I own (yes, I've got a set of flats for every bass and change them out for rounds depending on my mood lol). Finger technique is another 15% followed by compression to fill the gap.
@ampthebassplayer
@ampthebassplayer 3 года назад
You know, I completely forgot to talk about strings. I know that the MusicMan signature comes with flats, but Joe has used rounds as well. Specifically, he's Rotosound Steel Roundwound Swing 66 Mediums, Thomastik Infeld Flats, La Bella Flats, which further leads me to believe his strings are less important than his playing and Jack's post production. Thanks for bringing it up though!

hey, little question here: how hard are you digging the strings back there in order to get closer to the tone? i don't usually play on the bridge pick-up because my fingers get tired pretty easily since the strings are harder back there / looks like it may be something I may have to work on

@ampthebassplayer
@ampthebassplayer 3 года назад
Absolutely untrue. Learning to hear and break down the sounds you hear and be able to replicate them is an important step in finding your own sound. It helps you develop your own preferences and understand how to manipulate tone with confidence. So many players don’t spend the time to listen to and learn from music that already exists and that can lead to a false sense of uniqueness and, in my opinion, stifles innovation. Stand on the shoulders of giants and you’ll rise faster than you would on your own.
@bassist789
@bassist789 3 года назад
AMP yeah but that should (and will, if you're a halfway decent musician) happen organically. Sitting down and spending hours trying to dial in someone's specific tone is absolutely a waste of time (again, unless you're in a cover band). Listen to records, absorb sounds, then, when it's time to make music, turn your brain off. Every musician shows their influences for sure, but it's just never about copying.
