Australians don't always say gday mate we also say hello dickheads
@TimeTraveller010
@TimeTraveller010 7 лет назад
Dick head is the best description for Anglo-Australians. And since when have they been able to speak English? Most Aussies sound like they suffer from a speech impediment when they speak. And they think people of non-English speaking backgrounds, or immigrants like me, are stupid or lacking in grey matter because we have an unpronounceable surname, or we are bi-lingual. Regardless of higher Ed backgrounds...

tip for speaking Australian! - speak in a normal English tone or accent but when you speak words such as up or my or anything ending in a y basically, end higher. not like extremely high, just a little higher than the syllable before

I used to live in England Wolverhampton but I moved to Australia when I was five I'm currently 11 and I have heard some of those words but I haven't heard most of them love you
@chloejones7748
@chloejones7748 8 лет назад
My dad and my nan say a lot of these words, some I haven't heard of but most I have. There's also 'piss' or 'grog' (which is beer/alcohol) and 'clacker' (which is your bum) and 'tucker' or 'bush tucker' (which is food/food you'd find in the bush)
@laurajane8469
@laurajane8469 8 лет назад
Ok there's heaps here that just aren't used unless you're from the bush haha We say mate a lot. And yes thongs are flip flops, but we call your 'thong' a g-string. Some more commonly used words/phrases are: 'Servo' - gas station ('I just need to go to the servo on the way') 'Arvo' - afternoon ('Come back this arvo') 'Bloody hell' - what, no way!/shit/damn it ('Bloody hell look what you've done') 'Chuck a sickie' - call in sick to work/take the day off work ('I might just chuck a sickie') 'Good onya' - well done [can be sarcastic] 'She'll be right' - it'll be ok 'Air con' - air conditioner ('Can you turn the air con on?') 'Barbie' - Barbecue/grill ('We're having a barbie for dinner') 'Brekkie' - Breakfast ('Do you want some brekkie?') 'Crook' - Ill or sick ('Georgia's crook at the moment') 'Cuppa' - cup of tea/coffee ('Come over for a cuppa') 'Mozzie' - mosquito ('I got bitten by a mozzie last night.') 'Sanga' - sandwich ('Do you want a sanga?') 'Smoko' - coffee or tea break ('Smoko time.') 'Stubbie' - bottle of beer ('Hey mate you want a stubbie?') 'Yewy' - U-turn ('It's back that way, chuck a yewy')

It's so funny reading comments and seeing people write things like "I lived in Aus for 15 years and I never heard these words" come on people this is a country we're talking about! If you haven't been to every square inch of the place then you can't say that we do or do don't say these things. Some of us do, I know I say quite a few and I'm a born and raised Aussie but I also know others who have lived here their whole lives that don't say any of these it just depends on the people you meet and what they were raised with like any other country and their slang. So chill everyone and have a beer we all know that is something we Aussies are most definitely known for!

So, I just want to clear things up a bit, because there's a lot of "These words are stereotypes" and "I've never heard anyone use these words" in the comments. Yes, most people in Australia do not use a lot of these words. The typical "Australian Slang" is more often used in rural and remote areas, and since at least two thirds of Australia's population live in cities and large towns, most people don't use words like durrie, or fanny, or shelia. But to the people who are saying "I've lived in Australia my whole life and I've never heard anyone use those words," just remember that Australia is the biggest island in the world. The country covers 7.5 million square km (nearly 3 million square miles for those of you not using the metric system) and hosts a population of over 23 million people. In your lifetime, you will have only met and been in the comapany of a small portion of this population. So, to say that no one uses these words just because you've never heard anyone use them, doens't mean you are right. Out of those 23 million people, probably less than 5 million would use most of these terms on a day to day basis. However, because they are distinctive, and different from other cultures and countries, these slang words have been adopted as Australian culture. These words, along with the stereotypical "bogan" image, give us something to show our uniqueness. So yes, these are considered slang words, but they are not commonly used by most of our population. If anyone wants to discuss/argue this with me in the comments below, I would be happy to, but in a civilized manner.

Probably not, unless you were going to be travelling to a remote area where people might use this language. If that's the case, then you might want to look up some of these terms so you know what people are talking about. If you are travelling to any where in Australia, you need to know that flip flops are thongs, but that's really all.

+zoe carlos Yeah I know most slang terms, sadly Australia has been Americanised through entertainment media. Young Aussies seem to relate this very same slang to Boganism and then proceed to feel ashamed of something that was around long before the term Bogan even came into existence. I don't exist to impress others and I'm not ashamed to use Aussie slang, it grew up with being part of my vocabulary. I am city born and raised as well, just thought I'd throw that one in there.

I like think it's funny how Australians are getting offended by this saying not everyone sounds like this, but this is literally what Americans go through all the time. people either use a hillbilly accent or a Californian accent and it's really annoying.
@Jayanimates7

ikr XD I'm American as well and even though I'm from the south I don't have a southern accent. only sometimes when I get mad it'll turn on XD what part are you from? I'm from Tennessee :P
@freedomcompany3428
@freedomcompany3428 8 лет назад
For real! If the worst thing the Aussies have to put up with is a misconception of their accent then they're doing just fine. Seriously if you ask someone who's not in America about us: Arrogant, rude, rich, helpless and probably dumb. This stereotype is even sharper if you live in Louisiana might I add.
@ok-lm9ns
@ok-lm9ns 8 лет назад
The difference is, there are so many different accents in America that we'll use the ones we hear the most, whereas in Australia we have two accents - the outback/country accent and your more city accent. We get pissed because typically, people make our accent sound British or an over-exaggerated outback accent.

The words are used, but not generally. I don't tend to really hear people saying them, but that is probably because I don't live in the country. I use the words "betcha" and "thongs".
@Misshowzat
@Misshowzat 8 лет назад
Almost none of those terms are used outside of the small or country towns. Basically the further away from the cities you get the more you hear (some) of those words. About 20 - 30 years ago you would have heard them more but basically only g'day, strueth, rele's and carked it are still common. However a lot of Aussies (pronounced oz-ee) just speak like British or American people with a bit of an accent. We do however tend to ask questions that don't need answering (how mad was she! how heavy is the rain?!) But yeah, Australia is a lot different than some people expect, but we like that ;p

So many Australia's getting offended by this like chill ahahaha many people around the world who do not know Australians personally or have never visited would simply be going off what they hear in the media from people such as Steve Irwin, Crocodile Dundee (can't remember his actual name) and Rebel Wilson to name a few and in movies in particular the accent is exaggerated quite a bit, my friend from England says I sound really Australian but just like it would be for her with me thinking she sounds really British, we don't notice it. The video is all in good fun and I actually think Zoe sounded quite genuine at times, they're just having a go at it and trying it out and yes not all of the slang is used but there was only one word I have never heard before and others were variations. Just get off ya high horse, no one is sitting there saying this is how all Australians sound, your accent isn't that important I'm sure everyone has butchered another accent once in their life.
@Lauriepch
@Lauriepch 8 лет назад
Nah. Many of those words are actualy used by either people in the bush (Outback) or just plain bogans in the city. On top of that the pronounciation is off. Heroo is not heroo. Its actually Hoo-Roo. Now fanny is not a word used like it is other places. Fanny in the USA is a rear end or an arse. A Fanny here in Australia is a Vagina. Most of these words are not used in the city or suburbs (in Sydney anyway, unless found in pockets) .

First I can't believe of the amount of Aussie haters in the comments bc I always expected them to be super chill and kind like Canadians but apparently you guys get really offended and second there is no reason to get so offended bc honestly how were they supposed to know what Aussies say or not when they're British like there's no reason to get offended bc people also make fun of British and American slang and most of the time it's not even common slang so everyone just needs to chill

You guys are adorable 😂 Yes all of those words get used, but not by everyone. You'll read a lot of comments saying "I don't speak like that, no one does!" Those people simply haven't traveled around Australia. 😉 You both got really close with some of the words (and the sentence reading at the end was even closer!) But some of the words have a slightly different inflection. E.g. 'Kark it' - the 'i' in 'it' needs to be thrown away. It becomes more of an 'e' sound. And then say it as one word instead of two. So it becomes 'karket' with the same sound as 'market'. Over all though, well done! Some words were spot on! Great video 😃👍🏻
