Interview with my new Nashville friend Robin Moore, native-born Tennessean who loves to show her Tennessee pride; offering some tips on how to sound like you're from here, as well as some pointers for visitors to Tennessee's capital.
@@carloscarias6276 One can never ever truly master and be fluent in an accent that they were not raised in. It’s just not gonna happen. All the very very very subtle details and pronunciations and whatnot, things that you just cannot show and teach people. Can’t replicate. Y’all should be proud of where you’re from, and not try to fake your own personality to have a southern Tennessee accent. Well I suppose if you’re fixin to be an actor or something, then yeah that’s an exception

I recently moved to eastern Tennessee. The people here are the nicest people I've ever encountered in my entire life. They are pleasant & good spirited. I'm happy to be here and look forward to living here for the rest of my life. ETSU pride!
sierra lynn I’m moving there next year. I have always struggled with social things and I can from central Florida where people assholes. It’s nice to hear good about where I’m going. Makes me feel more confident about meeting new people there.
I was a kid in SE Tennessee. Who knows what a poke is? how about a polk? And how many have had to use an outhouse because there was no running water, much less a bathroom in the house? What about a sponge bath in a hot dipped steel tube, water heated on the stove? A house built by your grandfather's own hands and heated with a coal burning potbelly stove in the living room, with thick quilts sewn by your grandmother to get you through the cold winter nights in the bedrooms. Gathering chicken eggs in the morning for breakfast? Cutting cedar trees to make fence posts with barbed wire around the edge of the property? Going to town to sell garden vegetables to the local groceries? And let's not forget the chigger bites and ticks.
I remember when my folks got an addition to the house. First in house bathroom in generations 😂 lol it was a big deal. Also didn't know that "hiking" was a term for a walk out in the woods until my late twenties. I thought that's just whatcha did when your were bored/wanted to explore
Hahaha I’m in Tennessee born & raised in the hills & this lady sounds like my mom face expressions and everything 😂 ain’t caint & y’all will always be words ma’am. Needed this video
henlo im from Cleveland Tennessee ive lived there all my life and the only time ive left Tennessee is when i go and see my mom side of the family in Georgia , and i also have the strongest accent in my family its really thick ,i grew up on mini farm (cows ,chickens ) i did not know i had a Tennessean accent untill ive heard someone else with a strong accent talk : P
I am a born and raised New Yorker... Westchester County and I want to stay in Nashville forever . Everyone is so nice and I want to speak like this woman and I want to move into the Parthenon building. Who would've thought there is an exact Greek replica in lil Nashville it's amazingggg
If you're born and raised in Tennessee and live in Tennessee, you don't have an accent... If you go somewhere else, then you got an accent... If someone comes from New York to Tennessee, then THEY are the one with the accent...LOL
So damn true. My mom and dad SWEAR I have no accent. But the second I play an online game or talk to someone who isn’t a tennessee native, BOOM. “Oh I like your accent where in the south are you from?”
I love your accent. I moved to Tennessee because I wanted to be with the wonderful people here I need to learn the language... my neighbor hated me before I even moved in. I am a Northerner. There are a good amount of southerners hate Northerners, so much so one killed my little dog. He also bullied me for 4 years... that is until I got him back now I am laughing at him...
Thank you SO much!! Bless your heart (in the good way, not when we TN people use it sarcastically LoL) I needed to hear this SO bad! My husband and I had to leave TN to come to stupid CO for a work contract - we have been here 8 years, and I'm starting to lose some of the strength behind my accent and it's breaking my heart. 💔 I still have mine, but it's a little weaker cause no one out here has one. Matter of fact, I only know I still have it because people always tell me "You're not from around here are you?"🙄 Bless their heart! (and that's the sarcastic one lol🥰😇) (and they ain't used to being called "ma'am" either or southern manners) 🤭However, when I am out and run into someone who has a southern accent (especially if they're from around TN, MS, or AR) my accent comes back strong and so does theirs! And we'll get so dang happy to be talking to each other, and we get to feeling homesick and want to talk for as long as we can before we go back to the "accent-less" people.! LoL🤪 My hubby and I are hopin' togettin' back to TN ASAP when his contract ends -- about 1 1/2 more years. But girl, hearin' you, brings it all back to me and I listen to ya whenever I need a boost to my own accent, or just am homesick. You don't know how much this means to me, you have brought me a taste of home I needed so much. ❤ Also in looking to hear someone, I saw a lot of articles about people actually wantin' to cancel 'southern accents altogether and lose theirs - especially "Gen-X-or- Z or whatever". 😡 That right there is just plain right out wrong! Anyway, I originated in Memphis for a short time, but wound up out in East TN (Sevierville and Gatlinburg). Me and my momma would oft visit Nashville for some of the best county spots around the state, although, Knoxville is tryin' to catch up for sure. However, we prefer small towns. (And you know my Dolly is from Pigeon Forge😇) Thanks to you I can hold on to my accent better until I get back and I'm fixin' to give ya a listen to anytime I'm feelin' homesick or need to get my old strength back behind my TN accent. (By the way, people out here freak out at words like fixin', reckon, yonder, and muddin') LoL Thank ya so much lovely lady for bringing me some hometown joy! Take care and God bless! (and you can most definitely tell I'm from there by how long this is because ya know we all know how to talk up a tumbleweed dustin' *LoL*) 🤣🥰😇💞
I'm from the hills of Kentucky ya'll born and bred. Everybody I talk to loves my accent, and I'm like, "didn't know I had one." LOL, a lot of folks think I'm from Tennessee or Texas. I guess from the fact my accent is really thick and deep, but it's got that hillbilly southern drawel to it. Idk I just go by what folks tell me
I was born in Florida But my mom brought me to Tennessee when I was a month old so all I know is Tennessee my accent is A Tennessee accent I may have not been born here but I am still a Tennessean. And the funny thing is is my grandmother was born in Tennessee my mother was born in Georgia but she’s got a Tennessee accent but sometimes a Georgia accent comes out
Justin Winsbro I was born in Illinois, but raised in Tennessee, so I feel you there with identifying as a Tennesseean, but being born somewhere else. Since my moms from Illinois, dad from Texas and I was raised in Tennessee, I have a bit of a mixed accent
I live in Memphis Tennessee and i think i talk pretty normal, but whenever i talk to people they be like, “Are you from the South? You got a bad accent” 🙂
I live in the middle of nowhere in middle tennesse! It is literally a 30 minute drive to the closest town. I don't have an accent, though. Only northern. But I don't know why!!!😠😧
I was born in TN (or they say), n raised up most in TN n KY. Did stay n live n Oklahoma n Texas, and my lil bro said I sound like my accent is from Texas.....bahahahaha
I’m born and raised in New England, since I moved to Florida 7 years ago I’ve had 9 or more people tell me I have a southern draw…💀🤷🏻♂️ Aka Tennessee or Kentucky accent
Same here! I lived in West Texas until I was 6 and then moved to Louisiana and lived there until I was 10. Then we moved to Franklin Tn and stayed there until high school. My family and I moved again but this time up north to Rhode Island and I stayed there until I was 30. Needless to say I pretty much lost my southern accent lmao. Last year I moved south with my family and we happily reside in southern Alabama. The southern accent here isn’t the same as the one I used to have but I do feel my accent coming back. Yayyy 🤠
The problem with Tennessee is standardization and “civilization” encroaching in the rural areas. Old-fashioned values and traditions will die out and so wil the dialect.
