You skimmed over the big reasons that Bill Gates is hated. His company would copy a product, get sued for it, buy the company, fire everyone involved in the lawsuit, and then fire anyone he didn't like. His company would also promise that if you worked hard, you would be valued, when they actually tended to fire programers after about four years of long hours and poor wages from their campus. Gates was banned from driving for good reason, because driving at over double the speed limit causes injury accidents, even if you have the money to pay for non-disclosure agreements. Gates did all this because he figured out how to avoid being held accountable in civil cases, years before. His philanthropy was mostly because of his wife's morals, not his...

The work of CLT is really amazing... Just recently in Corrientes (Argentina), two baby jaguars were born in the Ibera wetlands for the first time in over 50 years; greatly thanks to the work of Mr. Tompkins, his wife and his organization! Their are also reintroducing Tapirs, Red Macaw, Giant anteaters and helping to recover the population of 2 severely endangered deer species. But, the greatest job thei're doing, is to change the locals mind, specially the childrens, so they can learn to take care of their enviroment. This is crucial in a society as ours. Thaks again for doing these videos! (Hope to see you in Argentina some day)

The biggest problem with our species is that we try to think digital in an analogue world. Nothing is black and white in this world. It's in our nature to categorize things as good or bad, but often it's a mixture. As you pointed out, the hard liners on both sides didn't like Mr. Tompkins. He was extremely wealthy, ergo he must have been exploiting people in order to get that way. He was spending all of his wealth on national parks and so forth, ergo he was interfering with development of the area. It's a no-win situation, but I agree with you that it's important to recognize the difference between Tompkins and Trump, Gates and Jobs. It is the nature of people to try to sort the world into neat boxes, but the world is a lot messier than that. Silly example: a weed can be defined as a plant growing where "I" don't want it. By itself the plant (say a dandelion) is simply doing what it's meant to do--finding a place to grow and propagate. To me, the fact that it's doing it in my vegetable garden or my lawn makes it a weed. It's important for all of us to get beyond our tendency to categorize and realize that the world is just a bit more complicated than is comfortable for us. Embrace the grey!

Thanks for the video and the clarification!

Those " conspiracy theories" actually sound like a reasonable summary of what billionaire "philanthropists" more typically do . Genuine supervillain "philanthropists" like Pritzker , Maurice Strong , and Soros are a genuine menace. It sounds like people expected the typical "extreme philanthropy " and they actually got something quite different and more authentic. Bill Gates sits somewhere in between.

I don't have words for how much I love what you do, say, and think Evan. This video embodies the attitudes and thoughts that gave me renewed purpose over the past few years when I had begun giving up hope I could have an impact. I will never have the wealth that Bill and Melinda have but they are showing that money doesnt have to be evil, its the people who only care about it and not what it can do that might be worthy of that title. this is very rambling but I felt the need to say something so I am not going to delete it.
@OttawaOldFart

Keep up the good work that you do but realize that there are others who will undermine you if you cut into their profits or convenience. I make my small world better but I am one and am fighting those who outnumber me. Sometimes though you can have a positive effect on people just because you are doing something that others come to realize they need to do as well. I noticed when I pick up garbage others will follow suit.

My US history teacher said American Protestant tradition, which helps drive capitalism in saying accumulation of wealth is a good thing under God, is why uber-wealthy industrialists give away to philanthropy because those who are wealthy should also give to the poor. It's why Stanford, the infamous and hated railroad baron of his time is remembered now for founding Stanford University which has contributed vastly to science and technology today. It's why Andrew Carnegie, steel magnate known for being anti-labor interests, is known today for all the libraries he founded and he died pennyless. Even oil monopoly man Rockefeller was known for giving a lot of money to charity. Ruthless capitalists need not hoard all their wealth past, and these guys knew it.

As a fairly left learning person I think you are on point, don't hate the player hate the game, I honestly think the mainstream benefits from outing rich folks who dare help others, always looking for some sign of their hypocrisy, even with Russel Brand and Lilly Allen over here - and the sad thing is it works. Progressive social values should unite folks, instead relative wealth is used as a divide. I knew nothing about Mr Tompkins and am glad I now do, taaa for the video.

Please prepare your inbox with lots of internet lube 😂 It wasn't all about chilhood vengeance but about undoing the legacy of unbridled power untempered by morality (the legacy of his father & others like him). Little Bruce puts on a costume based on an animal that he fears. Imagine for a moment that if he feared squirrels, what costume would he put on? What if he feared African Americans, how racist would that be? Or what if he feared gay people in a Pride parade? What if he feared Canadians? Does he put on plaid hockey player uniform, throwing Mapple-rangs with built-in Sorry Cards at criminals and his hide out is a local Tim Horton's?

Thank you so much for this. I like to think myself having a quite well-tuned moral compass, and I usually recognize the actions of people being affected by external factors, and sometimes being beyond their meaningful control. But someone's gotta take the blame somewhere, and that usually goes to the wealthiest and most influencial. An important reminder that not all are egocentrical beings raised from the mortal coil; and those that contribute bring positive change and progression akin to the contributions of 100.000's of people. Really have to check the statistics of their contributing before I keep doing the mantra...
