Spin the same yarn from one skein to the next so you can achieve consistent spinning for your whole yarn spinning project. I will show you how to measure and adjust, wraps per inch (WPI) and twist angle. Then I will show you what to do if your spinning is too thick, too thin, has too much, or too little twist.

Tips for spinners, try spinning with a metronome to keep tempo and draft consistent!!! Helps a lot and also gives you an excuse to buy a cool metronome!

@@JillianEve You should!!! Using a metronome while spinning is like magic. I would recommend drafting for four counts while following the tempo as you peddle. Works for old sewing machines, too!

The inventor of the Electric Eel Wheel gives an amazing spinning control card with each wheel. It has the twist angle laid out in a really unique way that I've never seen before. The other side of the laminated card also has a really good chart for WPI--better than one I bought that was made from acrylic plastic. I tend to ignore grist because I find all the measuring takes away from the pleasure of spinning--but that particular card makes it so much easier that I've started measuring more and more. Everyone's different, I suppose. Maybe that card just finally made it all make sense for me. It might not work the same way for other spinners. BTW--I have the EEW Nano and the 5.1 and I adore them both! Maurice continues to iterate and improve his wheels over time--but they're already awesome. They just get awesomer. :)

Evie, I don’t expect you to remember my other comments during Vlogmas, but at one point I think I had shared with you that some of your videos here and there were very helpful to me learning how to drop spindle on my own during the pandemic. Then I watched all of your Vlogmas episodes this year and got to know you a little bit better. I’m that kind of person. Anyway, I was a bit curious so I went back to the very beginning of your channel and I am watching chronologically. At one point I thought to myself, she’s a musician. And now I see you’re a cellist. I’m a musician as well. My husband was a performing songwriter (he died about 11 years ago after a long and courageous battle with brain cancer) and I was a Music Performance (voice, conducting, flute) minor in college. That’s where we met. So I appreciate that mentality that you bring into your creative practices. (I also saw a bench that I thought maybe went to an electric piano or a harp or something. Perhaps that’s your cello bench!) I just wanted to say thank you for keeping me company. I am a knitter and a drop spindler … do some small scale frame weaving and I do crochet - mostly lace edgings and stuff like that. (I used to crochet blankets because they worked up so quickly when I was young and working and had nieces and nephews coming along.) I am slowly considering wheel spinning. Once Omicron burns through I want to join the Central VA Fiber Arts Guild and take a class to see how I like it before investing in a wheel. Rigid heddle research has pointed me in the direction of an Ashford RH loom so I appreciate watching you use Ashford wheels. I think a traditional might be where I go. (A visit to New Zealand is in my bucket. ) Long story long… Thank you and have a restful break in January! Your fiber friend, Leslie Bailey

I've been found out! 🎻💕🎵🤣 You are right, the bench that is perfect for spinning is also my cello bench. I have an electric keyboard, but cello is my musical love. I've played since I was 4 years old. There is so much about music and spinning that cross into eachother. The rhythm, feeling the tension and twist in your fingers, the technical aspects of how regular practice is the key to unlocking limitless creative expression. I love every thread and note of it! Happy spinning! 💕🎵🧶

I’m not proficient enough to achieve a completely consistent yarn. I’m just happy to get a yarn that isn’t wildly thick and thin. I think I prefer to spin woollen, but I i am learning with combed top,not a batt or a rolag. Counting treadles? Too much to absorb all at once😀
@JillianEve
@JillianEve 4 года назад
I honestly think the counting came more naturally to me because of my background in music. It felt really natural when I figured it out. Spinning can get super technical but ultimately you need to enjoy it! Spin whatever works for you! 💜

Great tutorial & LOVE the Cello! The bit about the yarn on the angle chart was a bit vague. I couldn't understand how you were measuring between the perpendicular (90*) and the other angles shown on the chart. Did the twist match one of those other angles??? I am deducing that it doesn't matter much which angle it lines up with as long as when you line up subsequent yarns with the target yarn & the angles match ... you're good to go. Being a little dense in the head here ... sorry.
@JillianEve
@JillianEve 3 года назад
Yes, the twist angle is confusing, no doubt about that! It helps to think of a barber pole yarn. The legs of the angle are one for the yarn itself, and another as if you drew a line coming off one of the stripes on the barber pole. The angle is between the two. I hope that helps!

I'm not quite sure how you would get the same results wrapping a pencil at a 1" mark and something like the thickness of a ruler for example since it not only matters the length of measure but also the width...I'm sure you would get more wpi on pencil than another item... Am I missing something? Also, how do you measure twist if you only want a single thickness yarn, or is that not supposed to be done? 💁Thanks Evie
@JillianEve
@JillianEve 3 года назад
I hope I'm understanding your question so let me know if I'm answering this completely off... The thickness of the tool doesn't matter because you are basically just trying to line up the yarn, side by side, to see how many fit in the space of one inch. You aren't measuring the length of the piece of yarn but the width of strand of yarn. Does that help? It can be hard to measure the angle in a single if the wool is all the same color. One thing I like to do is spin a different color wool into a tiny section just to make it easy to see and get the angle measurement. Happy spinning!
@ImGinaMarie
@ImGinaMarie 3 года назад
@@JillianEve ok, I see now... doooh, lol...so theoretically I could just lay yarn perpendicular to a 1" measure back and forth to get wpi...right? I'm having major problems overspinning singles I'm using 7.5:1 ratio and have pretty good tension, I've tried everything...I'm trying to make sock yarn...I'm new so maybe I'm biting off too much...thanks for replying Evie, you are so patient and kind..PS I have a faster whorl on the way but I can't imagine having even more twist!!! 🤪Yikes..also using Corriedale top
