A handy skill for making boards in the absence of a saw, for making boards that follow the grain of the wood (like skis), or for a quick footbridge! Make two and you could even drive over it in a pinch...

Intriguing and encourages you to do likewise. Sometimes, "the rough and ready approach" is the right one!

You killed it on alone season 6! Just watched your older brother do pretty good on Alone: The beast. His team out thrived all of the other teams. I hope Alone does a another duo survival season and invite you and your brother. It probably wouldn't be fair though, you guys are too good.

A couple of 4th generation family builders & I built this beautiful retaining wall out of fallen redwood that will last another 100 years, easy! We had to split whatever dry fallen redwoods on the spot which involved making a fewcbridges. We used a huge metal checker & had about 8 or 9 wedges to go with it. We took about 10 redwoods that were about 4 to 5 ft in diameter and in lengths of 9 & 12 ft. Then we made what I guess is called diamond wedges & saddle wedges. Once we got the wall up, I used a broad axe to touch up the face. Then the last part was putting in two deadmen 15 ft back so for the wall to go, the whole yard has to go. Put some chicken wire up against the wall then back filled it with 2 inch & inch & 1/2 gravel. That was about 25, maybe 30 years ago & if you're in Big Sur, Ca., you can still see this about a 100 ft long, 6 ft high redwood retaining wall at the Big Sur Bakery.

You made that look easy all in a single day I just recently split 5 logs each 5 feet long except it took me a week to do each one and only one would split in a day because only just learned to do this on my own self taught through trial and error. I watched others do it and understood the concept and over all technique so I bought 2 metal wedges used those but couldn't get any satisfactory usefulness out of them since I didn't know a lot of techniques with only those but when I made 2 large wooden wedges then it opened up a whole range of techniques I didn't have it sped up the process for sure. Had I known wood prices would increase so much I would've made them into boards myself but by that time I'd turn them into firewood I have a few more maybe I'll try my hand on those and see if I can make a board.

Not to sound like “that guy” but it’s actually easier with a longer handle. Ya just look where you want to hit. Visualize it. Sounds dumb but it does work. Also splitting loads upon loads of firewood will improve your accuracy...lol

The thing is make sure if you miss you're not going to hit yourself. So if you stand up a 3 foot log and intend to split that. If you miss it's swinging down into your foot. So put like another log in front of your feet.

Where do you recommend to buy an axe like yours? It’s obviously very sharp. Have you seen the documentary called “Happy People”? A trapper makes skis using this method. Great work!

Any tips for someone looking to build a bridge across a swamp? Not sure if I can use the cedar in the area or if the pine would last longer as posts.

We used to use the 2 wedge method to split fence posts out of locust on paps farm. Now we use the one wedge and a chainsaw with a rip chain method....lol Much faster.

why a dry wedge? Can I make a wedge out in the wild from a recently chopped green limb or something?
@theinitialscc1924
@theinitialscc1924 2 года назад
you might end up mashing the green limb to a pulp. it won't be an effective driver.

Just an educated guess ... the green tree looked like Ash and the seasoned looked like Popular or Cottonwood? What wood is better? Im thinking softwood not hardwood ? ( like Hickory lol ) Do you want a long section without knots to split better? Seasoned is better im thinking?
@user-cs3hi8zp7p
@user-cs3hi8zp7p 4 года назад
All depends what a fella is trying to accomplish with the wood.
@ElkinsEric
@ElkinsEric 3 года назад
You can do it with either and in my experience green wood is way easier to split. We used to use the 2 wedge method to split fence posts out of green locust. If the same locust were dry, you’d used 10 times the effort to split it.

May i ask The small hatchet has a nice ring do you feel any vibration in the handle. Who makes it and how long is it? Please I have a hatchet for camping and survival (harbor freight though with plastic) but i want to purchase a life long axe that is light, strong and effective. Is a plumb axe good? What are your recommendations you rock i don't care what they say you did in Mexico...lol a joke
@hobojordo
@hobojordo 3 года назад
Haha.. It's a russian axe.. they have an amazing shape and I give them a chisel grind and slip on head.. makes for the perfect ax. I am as we speak trying to figure out someone to produce these for me so we can make them and get them out there - like you said the perfect axe and the only one you'll need. If you want to go to my website at jordanjonas.com and sign up for my emailing list and I'll let you know when I get them made.

Doesn't banging on the metal wedge with the axe deform its eye?

It does… thus the wooden wedges, (those are ok to hit w an axe) and if a metal wedge then use the maul which is made for that …
