Knowing how to split a beehive is a useful skill for any beekeeper. When colonies become over crowded they are prone to swarming. By splitting a hive successfully, the beekeeper does not lose bees to a swarm. Also, this is also a great way to increase your hive numbers.

Been thinking about splitting my 17 frame Lazutin hives in half. They haven't used all the space in almost 3 years. But with the record late season snow in the U.P. I really want to see how they wintered first. Memorial weekend is almost here. Which it still gets down to freezing at night into June. I left 75-80 lbs of honey and they have did good previous winters. But it wasn't a late spring. For me taking notes this year is very important. Need to pay attention to bloom timing. Berry season is the best flow even better if basswoods bloom. So wanting early blooms to hopefully build bees up before berry blooms.

I would definitely try two 8 frame hives instead of one wide hive. Or make 3 additional frames and have 2 ten frame hives. Bees like to go up like in a hollow tree instead of building horizontally. That is just my opinion and what I would do. It doesn't mean I am right or correct way to go. Thank you

With 4 frames of brood and a mated queen, will the splits make a good honey crop? If you would have left 6 frames of brood in just 2 hive split would they swarm this year? You were sure lucky to find the queen so quickly. Tonight the casino is calling. LOL Sounds like you were suffering from allergies or a bad cold. Hope it gets better soon. Thanks for the good video. I'm 200-300 miles north of you so it will be another 2 weeks for splits here.

Nothing is guaranteed Russell but for me 4 frames is perfect not too strong but not too weak. Yes we have a lot of pollen 🤧 coming in. I have pollen allergies.

When are you going to release the queen?
@silverlakeadventure
@silverlakeadventure Год назад
Queens are in a screen cage with the candy plug. So bees would eat the queen candy and release the queen themselves. Thank you

Do you decide on a split based on the number a full seams of bees? 80% full or less?

Hello Maggie 👋 I start splitting usually when I have 8 plus frames of brood depending on the weather. Thank you

What is the purpose of the hydrogen peroxide?
@silverlakeadventure
@silverlakeadventure Год назад
Hello Christian 👋 long time no hear from you. How are you and your bees doing? Hope everything is going well. I use hydrogen peroxide to disinfect equipment tools, bleach and to clean and disinfect surfaces. I spray it also on my gloves and hive tool when inspecting multiple hives as prevention of diseases. Thank you wish you all the best 👍

@@silverlakeadventure Yes, been a while. Bees are doing pretty good this year. Gonna do some splits this weekend. I didn't realize the hydrogen proxied wouldn't be hard on the bees. Is it because it evaporates quickly or because the percentage is so low it doesn't bother the bees? Your videos are always so interesting...I enjoy them very much.

Yes I don't go over 3% and I don't spray the bees just equipment and tools
