How would you or what knot would you use to attach the mainline, if you need backing on first? Cheers

Awesome video. I do it the same way , you forgot to mention : careful on the direction on witch you put the loop , because if it isn't on the right one and it doesn't tighten as it spins it might spin around the spool as your winding. I usually hold the line with a wet kitchen paper or towel with a little liquid soap , in this way the line is slightly lubricated. Thank you for sharing , happy new year! Keep them videos coming. :-)

If it slips and doesn't tighten, just flip the lasso 180 degrees and make sure the line folds back on itself, which locks the lasso inplace. Some reel spools even have a notch for the knot. A piece of foam or sponge in the rod ring would give tension and allow for liquid soap / water to be used as you fill the spool too.

Would you utilise the same method for braid?
@stevemccrory9130
@stevemccrory9130 2 года назад
For loading onto a reel, YES. This method is perfect. There are some qualities in braid that are different to mono though. It is more resistant to UV damage, and it is generally coated to make it feel smoother. This also reduces the capacity of braid to absorb moisture initially, which is why braid gets better with use. The coating wears off, and there's a greater rate of absorption. "Braid direct" is a bit of a mis-nomer and fallacy, in my opinion. It is correct in the fact that the rig is tied directly onto the braid, but the direct part once braid is worn in over a long period of time and use is less, it takes on a more pronounced sinking capability, falling to the bottom of the lake MORE than it would when newer. Less coating = better able to absorb water = heavier braid, which means it sinks better. Also, soak the braid for a couple of days before loading it. Some of the coating will wash off and some of the colour pigmentation will also wash out of the fibres, giving a more usable braid from the off. I hope this helps in giving you a better understanding of braid....but please also read my answers to a couple of other questions posted here.

you forgot to mention that the reel turns anti clockwise so when you lay the spool of line that goes in water make sure it comes off anti clockwise . then after spooling take the spool off from reel then get a jug of warm water (just hot water from your tap )and soak it 3 times for 15 minutes a time to remove the line memory

Thanks for this, can explain to me Why open Bale ready to cast. Then the line all twists off. End up with a right old mess around the reel.
@stephmckenzie7863
@stephmckenzie7863 Год назад
Hi Allan, if when you open your bail arm the line starts to unwind, it could be that you have put to much line on, the line is too thick or the line is old. Try and fill the spool so that there is maybe a 1mm gap to the lip of the reel.

Just how I do it. Thanks Des. I’ve never known the reason for the water in the bucket though, can anyone tell me why we use the water and not just an empty bowl/bucket? Cheers

Nylon monofilament naturally absorbs water. Dry line hardens in situ and builds memory, thus creating coils, and possible tangles. Line that has been soaked or is wet is more supple, and is softer. Some anglers use a wet wristband over the spool to retain moisture, especially on braid. Useful if you're transporting rods or storing rods in warmer temperatures. Doing this also prevents the line from falling off the spool if you forget to switch the anti-reverse on, or accidentally knock it to the off position when putting the made-up rod into your ready rod holdall.

@@stevemccrory9130 excellent thank you for that explanation I appreciate it. It’s nice to understand why it’s a good way to do it, I probably should’ve found this out before now but at least I was doing it right even if I didn’t know why 😂👍

@Steve McCrory if dry line creates memory, why then are the spools of line purchased all dry. Should they not be stored in water. ...... or are you saying that by adding the water it removes the memory?

Water is the lubricant. Simple.

Why do the thicker lines sometimes spring off the spool (in coils) after you've finished? Does the water also help stop that?
@stevemccrory9130
@stevemccrory9130 2 года назад
Line that has been stored over a long period, or even been on a tackle shop shelf for a long time will be subject to UV damage, and to a lack of moisture. This causes the line to build up a memory. Line that has been wound onto a manufacturer's spool too tightly can be even worse, especally when you're (actuaally) reversing how the line was supplied to the shop when winding it onto a reel. Nylon is naturally water absorbent, so soaking a bulk spool (say 15lbs @ 0.30mm diameter) overnight, before adding it to your reel, is always going to be better. It will soften the line and reduce the memory. Example? When ironing, is it easier to get creases out when the favric is dry,, or when it is wet? Same applies to line. Hope this helps.

@@stevemccrory9130 Yeah that makes sense, surprised that brand new line would do that though......Thanks 👍
@stevemccrory9130
@stevemccrory9130 2 года назад
@@richardwebb6045 Brand new line isn't always "brand new". Let's say 10 spools of line are on the display peg in the shop, and you purchase 2, then another angler purchases 2, and another does the same. That's 6 spools that need to be replaced from stock that might have been in the stock room for a month. Those 6 spools that have been sold are replaced with month old stock directly on top of the 4 unsold spools. Now you have 4 spools that could posibly be 2 nonths old and 6 spools that are 1 month old. And so it continues....and that's why it might be better to ask when the last order came in, also when the display was last filled, and / or if there are any newer boxes in the stock room you could have, instead of taking the (possibly) dry / UV damaged line off the display. Stock rotation on perishable items is just as important in tackle shops as it is in the supermarkets.
@richardwebb6045

@@stevemccrory9130 Good point 👍 You'd think it would be important for tackle shops to rotate the line on display when replenishing the shelves, so ones at the back then become the ones at the front rather than be a permanent straggler at the back.
