Hey Gary, I was curious if you've ever found any platinum nuggets in your adventures. If I recall correctly, that might be more likely up in the Klamath Mountains? Oh, how about diamonds? There are in fact some diamonds in your parts. The geologists aren't exactly sure how the got there because they've only ever been found in ancient channel conglomerates and modern river gravels, never in their host rock. They pretty definitely do not come from kimberlite or lamproite pipes, as in your normal commercial hard-rock diamond mines. One idea is that they're just eroding here and there out of the chunks of upper-mantle that got shoved up onto the continental margin. Probably worth taking a second look if you find any little bits of quartz in your pans, because it might not be quarts
@TwoToes
@TwoToes Год назад
I have one nugget that I need to have Chris Ralph look at. I have found a couple of small diamonds north of Oroville.
@janjohannessmith7033
@janjohannessmith7033 Год назад
Cataclysmic flood event might explain a random disbursement of diamonds in the ancient gravels
@cacogenicist
@cacogenicist Год назад
@@janjohannessmith7033 - The diamonds in the modern gravels are pretty much always downstream from ophiolites -- chunks of oceanic lithosphere, including mantle pieces. And they are often associated with mantle minerals, like chromite. So it's seeming likely to me that they are hosted in the ophiolites.
@cacogenicist
@cacogenicist Год назад
@@TwoToes - Very cool. If you and Chris were ever able to meet up for a day of prospecting, those videos would get quite a few views I think. I wonder how many diamonds bounced off black sands in the old timers' sluices, and washed out. Probably a lot.

If you had a drone that was also a metal detector you could cover a lot of ground and never leave a comfy chair. Instead of the beep it'll be 3d virtual reality goggles that look into the ground in real time. Then it tags strikes with GPS. Now you just need to dig and pan. Many mines were abandoned and considered paid out but gold was fifty bucks an ounce or less back then. They had no metal detectors or cars,food was scarce and there were bandits and hostile locals. Look at the suffering in the Yukon. This is a cakewalk. I'd also figure out a recirculating sluice box. Then you don't pollute the water and can also use it in places without water. Solar cells, battery,pond pump ,the sluice box and two tanks of water should do it. I wonder if a centrifuge device could spin the dense gold out of sand and gravel.

Love your channel. I notice you always ask yourself "Why only one?" I've been curious also. I started critiquing your videos when you are grabbing a hand full of gravel and waving under your detector. Almost every time, when you wave and hear a signal, you will toss the balance of gravel left in your other hand. Not every time but most of the time. Maybe a contributor to the "Why only one?" conspiracy. Keep up the good work. You got me panning and now I'm shopping for a detector. Thanks for helping me spend my money. LOL
@TwoToes

I throw all the gravel back into the dig hole then before I burry it up, I check it one more time. Most of the time I edit that out to keep the video run time down. But I still want to know why only one! lol
