This guitar was one that I bought new on sale for $40. It's been painted and used to practice paint markers. I decided it was time to clean it up with a new pickguard and Duplicolor Perfect Match spray paint. www.amazon.com/Dupli-Color-EBGM04347-Olympic-Exact-Match-Automotive/dp/B00407YOPQ/ref=sr_1_2?crid=102NDB7OQRZWO&dchild=1&keywords=duplicolor+perfect+match&qid=1597802123&sprefix=duplicolor%2Caps%2C225&sr=8-2, www.amazon.com/Dupli-Color-EBPR00310-Perfect-Scratch-Filler/dp/B00407RTBW/ref=sr_1_7?crid=102NDB7OQRZWO&dchild=1&keywords=duplicolor+perfect+match&qid=1597802254&sprefix=duplicolor%2Caps%2C225&sr=8-7, www.amazon.com/VHT-BCL0125-Exact-Match-Automotive-Fluid_Ounces/dp/B00407NK6A/ref=sr_1_2?crid=2NZS78E8G5721&dchild=1&keywords=duplicolor+perfect+match+clear+coat&qid=1597802294&sprefix=duplicolor+perfect+match+c%2Caps%2C176&sr=8-2 www.amazon.com/Canomo-Adhesive-Acoustic-Pickguard-Multi-Color/dp/B07BN1JCLL/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?crid=26U1JOY3Y16BG&dchild=1&keywords=acoustic+pickguard&qid=1597802347&sprefix=acoustic+pick%2Caps%2C193&sr=8-1-spons&psc=1&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUEyNE1NWTE3QjVLVTdMJmVuY3J5cHRlZElkPUEwMzk0MTQzV0tESVZDR0JIWE1aJmVuY3J5cHRlZEFkSWQ9QTA3NjQ5OTRSV08xOFBBNks4N0kmd2lkZ2V0TmFtZT1zcF9hdGYmYWN0aW9uPWNsaWNrUmVkaXJlY3QmZG9Ob3RMb2dDbGljaz10cnVl

Hey Tom, that was an excellent job and a very informative vid. Do you soak your emery paper or just wet it at the time? I've always done the latter but I'm wondering if soaking makes any difference. Do you have any opinions about that? Anyway, good vid and a terrific end result. Thanks for sharing.

@@TomPetersonRefuseReuse Well, there you are and where are you, as my Dad says. When I worked on cars in my callow (and distant) youth, the emery paper got soaked because I left it in the basin of water when I knocked off for the day. At least it never got lost that way. It wasn't technique, it was laziness on my part. Oh well, I guess it's the least of my worries. Cheers Tom, God bless you and love to the family.

I have a doubt, and I can’t seem to get help anywhere. I really hope you could help out! I’m a little scared considering this is my first guitar refinish project and I’m just a 17 year old girl with less than mediocre woodwork experience haha. I’m sure I can paint the guitar body okay, but I was thinking of doing this really cool design on the fretboard. It is this 25$ guitar so i’m not too worried about damaging it but I still wanna do a good job. It’s an ebony fretboard and I’m not planning on painting or dyeing the entire thing, only drawing some detailed art(no fretboard stickers are available here). I was wondering how to go about it, I have both poly and lacquer and I was planning on using acrylic paint. As far as I know, I have to dress the frets/remove them, slightly sand the board, apply acrylic, clear coat with lacquer and do a steel wool clean off. Another thing was mixing the lacquer and some paint, painting with that and then coating it. I’ve noticed the strings don’t exaactly touch the fretboard but again, they kind of do and the vibration can make it wear off too. I hope I can get as experienced as you one day! Thank you so much for reading, love from India :)
@TomPetersonRefuseReuse
@TomPetersonRefuseReuse 3 года назад
If it were me, I wouldn't remove the frets. You said it's an inexpensive guitar, if it doesn't work out, it can be wall art. Not sure if paint pens are available to you, but I wrote the alphabetical note names right on the fretboard of this guitar a while back. I did it to help me learn the fretboard better. Anyway, the paint pens really held up, in fact I had to scrape the paint off with a razor.
@TomPetersonRefuseReuse
@TomPetersonRefuseReuse 3 года назад
But, I would just use whatever paint you have, if you mess up or don't like it, scrape it off with a razor. Don't worry too much, just try it out.

I have a gloss black guitar that has a bad paint job.(paint chipping off) Would I have to sand it down to bare wood or can I lightly sand and primer it? And then paint and clear
@TomPetersonRefuseReuse
@TomPetersonRefuseReuse Год назад
You would have to use some auto body bondo to fill the chips, and sand. It will smell pretty bad and be messy. It might not be worth it. You can try sanding and primer, just to see how smooth you can get it. I personally wouldn't bother sanding down to bare wood.

I put links to amazon for the paints I used, although I got them cheaper at an auto parts store. If those aren't available to you, any decent lacquer paint will do, don't use enamel. As for the sand paper, I bought some at the same auto parts store. 800,1500, 2500, and 3,000 grit. The polish is also from the parts store. I guess it can get expensive, but I use the sandpaper and polishing compound on several guitars.
