Whether a tree needs to be staked or not can be determined by multiple factors:
the type of tree that’s planted
how large the root ball is
how open the area is where it's planted (considering wind)
how tall the tree is
If you can move the tree around easily or know with your weather conditions that wind will be a factor, it's best to stake the tree for the first 2-3 years. Stabilizing the tree maintains its stature and keeps it growing upright.
Minimal tools are needed to stake a tree - just a few essentials:
2 T-posts
2 tree straps (nylon straps)
wire or twine
Pound in each post on opposite sides of the tree until the “T” is securely in the ground. Place a strap around the tree. Use wire to connect the strap securely to the T-post. Make sure the tree is straight and twist wire to tighten. Repeat on the remaining T-post (on the opposite side of the tree), making sure the tree has slight give both ways.
After a year or two, check the tree by wiggling it slightly. If the root ball still moves easily, leave the stakes in. If the tree is solid, remove the straps. Leaving the straps on too long can hinder growth.
