I keep a pair of thick leather welding gloves on my hearth, so that when adding logs or positioning logs to get the best air flow around them I don't have to worry about burning myself, and I can carefully place logs where I want them rather than tossing them onto the fire.

When you seeing your video, I was just reminded of Cambodian rural life in the past when it was so cold during Khae Kakdoek (cool wind season) we would always make a fire in the morning and tried to stay close to it to get warm. It is a sweet memory in fact

Yes. It has been cold. I love to make fires. I learned it as a child when I was fishing. Made the fire to cook the fish so it was great. Now, I love making them in the fireplace and especially now when it gets cold. I like it better than running the heater. Excellent tips :-) Have a great day and sending good wishes to all of you :)
Hi, dear. This will be our 2nd year using the fireplace. We learned it the hard way last winter when we first used it. We were rookies and smoked came inside our house. The entire room were filled with nothing but smoke when we started burning lol...It was all bad, a hot mess and scary 🤣😅. Our neighbor had to show us to how to use the fireplace lol....Thank God for him lol...

Hi Senaca Stokes. The open face fireplace would really only heat up the room it was in. After the initial start up, we had to add wood every 20-30 minutes. We now have an insert that heats the entire house and we only add wood 1.5-2 hours.

Hi and thanks for watching! The cone shape just helps tje paper burn better. It creates an air flow. You put it up the chimney to force warm air in there and start the air flow action. Heat rises so the warm air raises up and out of the chimney which causes a draw from the fireplace. So when you start the fire, the draw will take the smoke out of the chimney instead of into your house. If it's not horribly cold outside, it's not super needed. But I still do it just to prevent smoke from coming in.
Very informative. When do you go back in to adjust the flue? Wouldn't the handle be hot. My handle is near front of fireplace, close it 40 percent after fire starts?
Hi mal rosee, thanks for watching. Once the fire is well established, we adjust the dampener. We use the hook part of the poker tool to do so because yes, it's very hot. How much you close it varies from fireplace to fireplace. But 40% is a good place to start. Hope this helps!
I've got a question. I have heard some mixed things on this topic. So I'm from Houston and I'm moving into NW Colorado up in the rockies for a job. I've never had a wood fireplace. The place I'm moving into does and also has the glass front. Can I leave a fire running when I'm going to bed to help keep the house warm at night? Nothing raging in the fireplace, but just some coals cooling down or something. I'm hoping not to have to completely put out the fire every night right before bed and start from scratch every morning.
Hi Walter P. It depends on the fireplace. If it's a contained unit, meaning once the door is closed there is no way for smoke, coals, logs etc. to get out (other than the chimney of course), it's usually ok to leave it burning. If a log can shift and can push the door open and fall onto the floor, then no. I would recommend contacting a local store that sells fireplaces and ask them to come take a look at it. They will usually do it for free and can tell you for sure if yours can or cannot be left burning at night while you're sleeping. Also recommend having a chimney sweep and inspection done before you burn in it. Thanks for watching and commenting! Hope this helps.
My fireplace has glass doors. Usually, I’ll just close those on the remnants of the fire, which are just coals or very minor flames on small pieces of whatever is left. If there are any significant flames, such as a full-length log still burning, for example, I usually smother that as best I can before heading to bed. Dumping ashes on top can help suppress the flames sometimes. Anyways, I’m sure you’ve already figured things out for yourself by this point.

Recently I've come across on 'upside down fire building' it's also a very easy and no maintenance fire starting way...done it a few times, works great each time and lasts long, requiring no extra bushes papers etc to start the fire. Hi Ryan Scott, thanks for watching. It depends on how tightly they close. Fire has to have oxygen so if they make a tight seal and there is no other way for the fire to draw air, it will go out. However, it's unlikely they will make an air tight seal. I would make a fire and close them. Then just watch to see what happens, if it starts going out then you'll know. If it does go out, then look for something that allow air to draw. A lot of fire places will have a lever somewhere that controls air flow. I hope this helps.
Hi K O, thanks for watching. If you spread the coals/wood out is one way. Also close the glass doors to restrict airflow. Those two will make it go out pretty quick. If you really have to have it out very fast you can put sand on it, but that is not recommended because you'll have to clean the sand out.
Hi, if you spread the burning logs out, the fire will burn much smaller and go out much faster. If you need to put it out immediately, you'd have to smother it with ash or sand, etc. But you would still want spread the logs first. Definitely don't use water or liquids unless it's an absolute emergency and you have no other options. Last thing you want is creating steam, damaging the bricks, or worse using something that results in injury or home damage.
