There are a lot of ways to start a fire.
And a lot of ways that are easier than a bow drill. But it is important to know how to use one, just in case you're in a survival situation that requires it. So Rated Red's Luke Williams shows you everything you need to consider before trying the method--and how to do it.

There are many good videos that teach bow drilling. This is NOT one of them. Form is awful and cedar heartwood is widely known for how hard it is to form an ember. It's just too resinous - the outer white part is better. You didn't show us the ember forming, either. I suspect you just used a lighter off camera.

Yes, I thought the same. Technique was terrible!

The only tip I have is to not underestimate how brutal it is to get a fire going in this way, topped only by the hand drill method. It is definitely not easy. The thought of doing this kind of thing in a survival situation when you're cold, wet, tired, hungry, and bug bitten, is pretty scary. I would imagine that a lot of practice and good technique will make the process more tolerable, but man, it's rough.

Its easy to do with 2 people and dry wood. One person holds the base and the rock, the other holds the bow and goes hardcore. As a kid me and my friend were able to make a huge ember in like 1 minute that way.

this is why pros carry 3 firelighting equipment (waterproofed matches, ferro rod, bic lighter) and they're on their person all the time. it is highly unlikely that you lose all 3 of them. if you do, then the situation is already severe. don't plan to improvise! survival is about avoiding problems, not getting into them. having said that, bow drill becomes easy if you learn the proper technique, practice a lot and have a good mentor/instructor. can't learn this from watching a couple of youtube videos.

Hard or soft wood doesnt matter aslong you not trying to Drill with a soft into hard wood Its not impossible but you make it a lot harder on yourself Ofc you want a soft board and a hard drill but a secure way is use the same wood for Drill and Board Your pushing piece should have low friction ..using wood for this works but you will Lose a lot of Energie Also dont make a bow and use a sling This will give you a stabile Drill due to 2 strings raped around your Drill And you can control the tention with your thumb
@kosfireandbushcraft
@kosfireandbushcraft Месяц назад
i disagree. you don't want to mix woods for bow drill. you're just adding another variable to the equation and you'll have problems with troubleshooting. the simpler, the better.
@Gn8Lif3
@Gn8Lif3 Месяц назад
@@kosfireandbushcraft well you can disagree with physics if you want but this is exactly why ppl have issues sometimes use 2 hardwoods and you have a hard time creating material for amber use 2 softwoods and you have material but it is harder to drill everyone on this planet who ever had the task of creating a drill found out that the drill should be harder than the material you want to drill into ofc in case of fire drilling you need material if it comes from the drill or the board doesnt matter in the end but it is still a question of efort or materialusage
@kosfireandbushcraft
@kosfireandbushcraft Месяц назад
@@Gn8Lif3 this is not about physics, it's about the point of bow drill. bow drill is for emergency and to cater to immediate fire needs. if you find a wood that is good enough for a spindle, then it is good enough for the hearthboard as well. no one's gonna look for a piece of oak in the middle of a pine forest. i always make the spindle and hearthboard from the same piece of wood. this has been taught by ray mears & co for ages. lofty wiseman says what you say but he is from the generation before mears. spindle and hearthboard from the same wood, bearing block, cordage, your technique = 4 variables. using a hardwood spindle makes it 5.

A good tip is always have a functioning lighter
@samuelflabra7326
@samuelflabra7326 6 лет назад
And if you get extremely frustrated trying this method for an hour with no success, I have another method for you. STEP 1: pull the bic out of your pocket. STEP 2: flick your bic. STEP 3: Light joint with bic. STEP 4: Yell at person who rolled the joint because they did a terrible job and it's not burning right. STEP 5: realize those mushrooms you ate an hour ago are kicking in and you're completely lost in the woods.

My tip is not to use your boot laces. They been known to fray and break. I replace my boot laces with 12 strand paracord which is 1000 lb tensile strength and 4mm whereas military grade 550 is 7 strand 550 lb tensile strength . Also will not fray as easily as boot laces. Better yet I don't remove my boot laces for a bow drill, instead I always carry 72" BOOT laces made out of leather, this will not break for your bow drill. Like you I carry a bic lighter too and in addition a magnifying lens for sunny days.

This is a pretty poor instructional. I don't think he's done this before because I watched him make mistake after mistake asking with choosing a wood that is notoriously hard to get an ember from. He should have chopped out a long piece of the white sapwood. Also guys, don't stop your drill on the ground or handle it with sweaty hands - you will never get a fire that way.

Gotta keep the knee with the foot on the hearth at a 90 degree angle, and brace the handhold arm against the front of that knee for more stability. I use it to start bonfires but never had success in the bush, usually too wet.
