@@TheBudgetDermatologist We appreciate your practical tips. I changed my approach to skin care after I subscribed to your channel. I have dry, eczema prone skin complicated by monthly hormonal pimples. I used to follow the Korean skin care fad of 8-10 steps. Which is time consuming, pricey, and I even ended up with more pimples and pimple marks. Now, I am just following the basics: AM: Salicylic acid or Benzoyl Peroxide Cleanser (I use BP cleanser a week prior to my period). Cerave AM moisturizer with spf 30 PM: Micellar water to remove sunscreen Cetaphil cleanser Olay Retinol Serum Cerave PM moisturizer No more layering of toners, essences, emulsion, ampoules and masks. You are absolutely correct that simpler routine works better: easier compliance and it delivers results. I managed my hormonal acne better with this approach. Thank you so much! Love and greetings from the Philippines! 💖

Dear Dr, please make videos for us people of skin of colour. Lots of things that work for Caucasian skin tones don't seem to work for many of us. I'm not a Dermatologist myself. As a medical student I was not bright enough to be able to enter my much desired and loved competitive specialty Dermatology. Yet, I have a lot of patients asking me lots of questions that I don't have training and wisdom about. I recommend and refer them to your RU-vid videos, because I am a fan of yours because you are honest, sincere, dignified, respectful, budget friendly and very understanding and approachable to whom our general public can relate to easily. 🙏

When I was upgrading from a .25 to 1.0 retinol (Skin Medica), my esthetician recommend doing 1 day for the first week, then 2 days in a row the 2nd week, etc, (ex. Saturday, then following Saturday & Sunday, then following Sat, Sun, Mon, etc) to help my skin get acclimated. It worked and I can now use it every night with no reaction.

You seem so genuine and knowledgable and your videos are so simple and easy to understand. Thank you so much for your videos and I cant wait to see how far this channel goes. Step 1: Is the retinoid right for you? Step 2: Pick your retinoid product. Types; Prescribed and over the counter. (Consistency and strength) High concentration = more irritation. Step 3: Put it in skincare properly (night with moisturiser, not with vitamin c and benzoyl peroxide) Step 4: Start slowly (use once and wait for few days watching out for irritation/redness, then use three times a week and dont use too much) Step 5: Be consistent.

This is the first time I've heard a derm recommend the OTC versions which is great because its a great way to desensitise your skin and work up to tretanoin. I didn't do this, but can see the reasoning. If you are really sensitive, and think you might react, having a 1cm patch of extremely irritated skin is much easier to manage than your whole face, so start with a test patch. I learned this after being prescribed tretanoin over 50 years from the age of 9 (back then it was an oil). Over the years, each time I had to see a derm for rosacea or cystic acne, it would be prescribed again. I was never successful, couldn't get past the first application. More recently, a GP prescribed it for "anti-aging". Now, thanks to RU-vid and all the support groups on social media and also COVID lockdown, I summonsed the courage to try again, this time starting with a test spot the size of my finger on the right side of my face and used it as advised (once a week for the first month, then twice a week for the next month, then three times etc). Incredibly, it worked like it was supposed to, eventually not being so reactive. That gave me the confidence to start a spot on the left hand side, and repeat the process. The marvellous thing about tretanoin is that it travels, so a finger sized spot actually is double that size due to the product travelling. Slowly, the treatment area was expanded in ever widening circles, the immediate skin around it was already semi-adjusted, so it didn't take as long for that area, then the next. It probably took about 6 months in all to be able to tolerate it. Even now after another twelve months, I am still on only 3 times a week, although sometimes I might give it a rev up on the weekends applying it twice in a row.

You're right about going about using the retinol gradually. I started using the Olay Regenerist Retinol 24 a little over a month ago. I generally have sensitive skin to begin with. I love this product! But I wish I would have listened to you the first time around in your skin care routine video, to use retinol gradually. I was using this almost every night, if not every night. For the first couple of weeks, my skin was fine, great even! Then, boom, my face got red, rough, sooo itchy, painful and really warm to the touch. The only thing I could tolerate on my skin was water. No makeup, nothing. It was soo painful. It started 2 weeks ago and it's just now clearing. I want to use it again, the right way, when I'm sure that my skin is back to normal. Listen to you this time. Lesson learned!!!

Thank you for breaking everything down! I was prescribed retinoids as a teen with acne and they always made my face way more red and flaky. All the dermatologist ever said was that I just had to wait out the redness and it would eventually get better. But I'm an impatient person and would just stop using it. I had no idea that I was applying it too soon after washing my face and that it probably would have helped to use a moisturizer first. I also didn't know to start super super slow either. Dr Dray said in one video that Retinoids does not make skin more sensitive to the sun. That do not increase the risk of sunburn. Well, I use 0,05 Tretinoin and I do fell my skin more sensitive to sun, to hot and cold temperatures as well. What your thoughts on Tretinoin during summer time. My Dermatologist don't let me do it. Would you??

Thank you doctor! This is by far the best explanation of retinoids Ive come across. Question, are there any parts of the face we should avoid putting retinol? And, is 1% retinol ok to start with? ( i have the Paula's choice 1% retinol)
@TheBudgetDermatologist
@TheBudgetDermatologist 3 года назад
The eye area can be more sensitive so proceed with caution! I love Paula’s choice products. I generally recommend stating slowly to make sure the 1% isn’t too irritating. Thanks for watching!

Just wanted to let everyone know who is considering the adapalene route, there is a product called AcneFree. It has the exact same ingredients as LaRoche Posay (which is pretty close to Differin) that is only $18.99. That's $10 less than the other 2. I found it by typing in 'adapalene' at Amazon.

I am taking notes like crazy. I will admit I’ve always rolled my eyes at these products in stores thinking it’s a gimmic that won’t really work but now willing to try them and as I’m aging I very much care about these things and researching like crazy not wanting to go load up on Botox … I am concerned with redness and irritation but learning a lot here

You ARE THE BEST! No wonder you look so good! Thank you for sharing your expertise and all your wisdom! I have been doing things backwards....damaged my skin in the 70's cooking my fair skin on the beach with baby oil. It was the in thing to do back then... tan . Now I am 56 and paying the price...Botox works well for my forehead but very expensive to keep up. Tried expensive fillers once and not worth it for short term. So unless I win the jack pot and can afford a face lift, I will follow your inexpensive information. Thank you so much for sharing and helping us out. 7 7

I would love a video on tazarotene! I feel like theirs so much info out there about adapalene and tretinoin, but almost nothing on tazarotene. I use tazarotene cream 0.1% everynight and it works so well for my acne but I actually don't know much about it. I would love to know more about it and how it works, and im sure others would to!

I SO wish I had seen this 2 years ago, when I gave myself a chemical burn using an OTC retinoid because I didn't know how to use it correctly. The urgent care clinic said I was allergic, but following your advice, I'm in week 2 with no issues. I thought I would have to swear off any anti-aging product for the rest of my life, so THANK YOU!

Start early ladies. The earlier the better but in the USA a determatologist will NOT give you a prescription unless you’re old and showing real wrinkles. I went to Mexico and saw a dermatologist paid like 40 bucks for the consultation each retinol tube was like 10 bucks. No prescription needed either. Oh and I enjoyed a vacation too. go Mexico 🇲🇽

I want to use retinoids because I know that they are the gold standard for anti-aging, but I'm really nervous about doing so...I used tretinoin for a while and experienced a very noticeable decrease in volume/subcutaneous fat in my face. I didn't lose weight or change anything else in my skincare routine. I stopped using it for a while, but ended up using it again for acne, and the same thing happened. I did some digging and it looks like some people have experienced a similar effect. I know that retinoids are a less potent version, but I'm worried that they'll still do the same thing. Has anyone else had this issue?

You make this so simple. I have battled mask caused acne due to the pandemic. Over the winter months my skin is terrible. Then in the summer when I was maskless I looked fine. Once October arrived and we were masking again, I’m breaking out again and very frustrated, especially since I was a person many years ago who used Retin A under a dermatologist care but once the pandemic arrived and we masked, I’m experience mask caused acne again as a retiree. I can not afford the copay for the derm right now but you and your store front made it simple. Thank you. I will try it and let you know how I do.

If you’re using fabric masks that you’re washing , try changing the type of detergent you use to wash your masks to a fragrance free / baby clothes detergent . Those are more gentle and better for sensitive skin.
