Interesting. I’m retired LEO from Las Vegas and getting ready to start my hotshot career now. I’ve had a bunch of questions that I’ve had answered except for one. I already own a 2016 Chevy Silverado 2500 diesel. I want to use it (since I already have it) and I haven’t seen anyone using GM trucks. I’ve never bought into the brand loyalty and talking crap about every other brand. Chevy, Ford, Dodge are all good trucks and each has its strengths and weaknesses. Having said that, is there something I’m missing as to why I don’t see hotshot drivers using GM trucks?

I was in the same boat police work is not cutting it. What I’m doing is lease on with someone as an owner operator. I’ve already started my process to get my own authority so once it’s done I can chose to use either option.
@slimshady5342
@slimshady5342 3 года назад
@@bobpettit3301 I’m sure if the trucks in good shape it’ll work fine for now. Just don’t haul near your max weight. Once you make some cash you can trade it in on what you feel would be a better choice. I mainly see ram 3500 duallys. Not a lot of fords though. And get your class A cdl. Yeah you might not need it now but after February 7th good luck getting it easily after that. Stay safe.

I've had my CDL with all endorsements for almost 8 years and have been hauling all kinds of fuel in a set of doubles for almost that whole time. Even with my experience, it's still nerve wracking starting hotshot car hauling.. I guess it's something people do when going from employee to boss..
@LoadMizer

It’s always hard to take that leap. If I didn’t have years of experience booking freight it would have been very hard to turn a profit at first. Piecing together consistent high profit margins is not an easy task. It takes a long time to figure it out.

I think that as far as regular capacity goes between the 2, the general market and lanes...cars consistently pay more than freight. It’s a LOT more work though. You’ll spend a lot more time making stops than just driving.

Hello! Great video! I have a tricky situation... I got my CDL license a month ago. I also got my DOT number, MC number 2 weeks ago and BOC-3. I don't have a truck, only a Chevrolet Astro (GVW 6000 lbs). To make my authority active I need insurance and the question is can I get such insurance for my Chevrolet Astro (GVW 6000 lbs) and will it make my authority active? I called too many different insurance companies and asked them about if I will buy a truck will they insure it with my DOT and MC number? Almost all of them said that they don't work with CDL drivers with experience less than 2 years and authority less than 1 year old. Progressive said that in California they don't work with new authority. I even don't know what to do now because if I really will buy a truck that I'm gonna do in the next couple months who will give me insurance? How can I age my authority? I have less than 2 weeks to activate my authority (there are 21 days) and what happens if I will not get insurance within 21 days? I know here is a year allowed to organize everything. I know it's also very important for brokers if age of my authority is bigger, most of them will not work with brand new authority. Or age of my authority doesn't depend on if it is active or not? Have I insurance or not? Maybe I should rent a truck for a while to activate authority until I'll buy my own truck? The another question is: If I will rent a truck in another state and get insurance there, in another state - will such insurance work for FMCSA? Thank you in advance!

Not sure how hotshotting compares to transporting rv,but I would think it would be similar which is what I currently do,so I'm used to the driveing and hauling was thinking of buying a tralior paid for and have some money put back for trouble that's what I have to do now in transporting rv for down the road would you think they are about the same transporting rv and hotshotting watching all your videos
@LoadMizer
@LoadMizer 3 года назад
From what I’ve seen on the boards and heard from those doing it, you’ll make more money doing hotshot. Tow aways don’t seem to pay over $2 a mile from what I’ve been seeing and it’s also a 1 way trip as far as Power only goes. Having a trailer allows you to constantly string loads together. You’ll be able to maximize your time out if you have a trailer. Load securement will be the big learning curve.
@tonyjohnson8416
@tonyjohnson8416 3 года назад
@@LoadMizer yea been doing rv for little over a year now,and it seams like when they are slow you are slow,I was figuring they would be less slow times not just being locked down to just 1 type of freight,the insurance would be alot higher to what I am paying now but I am leashed on with somebody so insurance is cheaper now,the load load securement would be a hard learning curve no room for mistakes got a ton of questions thou alot to sort thru and get in order

I have a question on hotshot CDL startup...for the initial FMCSA inspection for the authority activation....do you get in trouble if you have a bed setup by removing the back seats? How about other modifications like booking up an AC or generator unit on the setup???
@LoadMizer
@LoadMizer 3 года назад
There’s no truck inspection to activate your authority. The only time you’ll get inspected is your annual and at weigh stations. As long as everything is secured you’ll be fine. They don’t inspect the inside
@wkk5064
@wkk5064 3 года назад
@@LoadMizer thanks...but I recall you video on steps to get started where you talked about getting things lined up for taking the first load and I recall you mentioned something that once you application is filed you have to wait for inspectors to schedule you...may be that was highway police inspectors????? Or may be things have changed in last one year....I will search for that again....

Stick shift or Auto? What is your opinion on this?
@LoadMizer
@LoadMizer 3 года назад
At this point I really don’t have much of a preference between the 2. If I drove more mountain grades I’d want a manual but the auto does just fine through most of the country. If you’re looking to do your own repairs the manuals are cheaper and easier to work on though. 👍

Say it’s time to inspect bearings, seals, brakes for the 1st time. How do I know if stuff is still good? For example bearings
@LoadMizer
@LoadMizer 3 года назад
Brakes can be measured by sight. There will be a wear line in the pads to show you when they’re ready to be changed. Bearings are a little different. Unless you notice metal shavings in your grease or oil when you change them out, you’re going to have to go by sound. Jack the wheel up and spin it. You shouldn’t hear any resistance at all. If you do then you’d be smart to go ahead and swap the bearings out. Check each wheel at least once a month. Once a week is a much better schedule but most definitely at least once a month.

It’s actually been interesting and certainly not easy. Paperwork is a pain. Dispatchers not really having the flick on the loads they are pushing. ( although some have been great to work with) tons of cheep freight to hit the “ not interested” on. I’m still using TS and CD but I don’t really haul many cars. Only thing I am debating now is the rental truck or running my 01 chevy dually and setting all profits in the bank. Not paying the lease would put a lot more in the bank. But then I have better reliability from a new rental.

Pretty much the same. The only real difference is insurance. You’re required to carry at least a million. Having autos on your policy is an increase also but it’s not really that big of one. Mine was an extra $1,300 a year.

I have a class A and would like to get into hotshot what is a good setup to start and is a gas truck ok to use or do I need a diesel
@LoadMizer
@LoadMizer 3 года назад
Get a class A set up. At least a 1 ton diesel and a trailer that can max the gross of the GCWR

Thank you for all the advise and the links for the equipment needed. I really appreciate it. I’m researching and studying the industry from every angle and the CDL test for when I retire from LE. Stay safe out there. Thank you for keeping the country moving.

So I’m planning on starting out with a 2000 7.3 F250 My GCWR 20k and my GVWR IS 8800 my trailer is 14k GCWR. My question is will I need a cdl or will a regular license work
@LoadMizer
@LoadMizer 3 года назад
You won’t need a cdl for that setup. You won’t be able to haul much with it though.
