Thanks, Auspex. Great intro video. I would caution new players on a few things: It is at the end of the day a hoard army, so while they are in the middle coast wise, you will be buying a lot of them. The old-style termagants are a pain to put together as the arms and guns are tricky to align. Stay active on the GW store. There always seem to be at least two or three models that are sold out. Buy them when you see them if you can. Finally, I wouldn't recommend the Forge World models. While very cool looking, GW has never made their rules worth what the points cost is. The Heirodules are probably the worst offenders of this. Hope this helps and welcome to the great devourer!

Remember to bring a playlist of Super Metroid music along because that game's retro, moody feel fits the Tyranids perfectly, and the boss theme for when combat breaks out still goes hard. And if you want to be nice to your Space Marine opponent, include Theme of Samus Aran just in case they start winning; let them feel good for a bit.

The big tyranid refresh will be the perfect time to do some spending because by then we'll have the codex and we'll want to buy things based on what the codex has to offer. Ik the deathleaper model that got shown looked really cool and I suspect a new big monster to come that'll also look really cool (new lord of war would be sick and makes sense to be one).

Going off general ideas of 'safe to collect' right now and least likely to get massive kit refreshes anytime soon, I suppose a good place to start would be zoenthropes/venomthropes, Tyranofex/Tervigon, Hive/Tyrant Guard, Maleceptor/Toxirine, Trygon/Mawloc, and Haraprex/Exorine, and the Parasite of Mortex. Rumors are stating a LOT of the range is likely to get refreshed for potential dual kits for more options, including standbys like carnifexes, warriors, raveners and hive tyrants. However, I would also say if you're drawn to em, picking up older Hive Tyrants, Warriors or Carnifexes would still be a good idea, especially if you decide to magnetize em. Those kits are some of the newest of the old guard, and there's many a magnetizing guide for these bugs for you to get the bulk of your money out of them as well, especially if willing to gamble the Screamer Killer (or a potential newer Carnifex kit) base size matching the current Carnifexes.

So many new Tyranid players. So many people who don't know about Robin Cruddace, the saga of the nuclear pyrovore, or the 6th Edition nid codex debacle that erased 24% of GW's stock price. Dear new nid players: please enjoy the faction. Just be aware that through the course of 8th edition, there was not a single FAQ/Balance Dataslate that did not nerf the faction in some way. And 10th edition is already off to the same start. This is the punching bag faction for the balance team.

Ugh. I, too, am a nids player of more than 20 years. When I read or hear the name Robin Cruddace, my genitals shrink, and i have to gnaw on my own arm until I calm down. Thanx to rob: 5th edition nids sucked, 6th sucked, and 7th sucked until the last few months. I think 8th and 9th were good, but 10th reeks of crud-man. "Lets make nids the costar of the edition, and suck... they'll love that!"

I picked up the Leviathan box as a Space Marines player, and the dude I was going to split the box with bailed on me. I decided to pick up the Tyranids, and I picked up a few models that my LGS had as "rule of cool" models to paint and play with here and there, but turns out they're a lot of fun to paint and play, so I may just stick with them. Plus a lot of the stuff I have is on that tournament list in the video, so it's nice to know it's viable...don't care about winning and losing, but I also don't want to field a sitting duck, either.

@timunderbakke8756
@timunderbakke8756 11 месяцев назад
Pick based on the models, not the rules. The codex may be good at first, or bad at first, but I promise it won’t be the same a year later. Most people I know either just embrace one faction and go all on regardless of rule strength, or they play two armies to double their chances that at least one is doing ok
@SacredGumby
@SacredGumby 11 месяцев назад
As venomthroaps and zoanthroaps are both really good and out of the same kit, if you buy 4 boxes you can technically build 6 venomthroaps and 12 zoanthroaps if you are willing to do a bit of kitbashing.

I only recently, at the end of 9th edition got into the hobby, i spent entirely too much getting every single unit available for blood angels, also the indomitus box set, and painted all the minis in blood angels colors to add to the army, then i got the lions guard set and was planning on building dark angels next, however 10th ed dropped and i got the leviathan box, i built all of the space marines but i havent decided what color scheme im going to go with, if i want them with the dark angels, blood angels or if i keep them ultramarines, however i really took a liking to the tyranids as something to get me out of space marines, so im putting dark angels on hold and plan to build all of the tyranids and try my best to complete that army first. If course i have a completionist mindset which is difficult for me not being rich, wanting to have max unit sizes, every available unit in my army. However, im just going to do what i can for now.

GW really needs to balance things. Necrons are crazy broken. 2 units of 6 Destroyers with a Destroyer Lord in each, 3 units of 3 Heavy Destroyers (one big gun and 2 anti infantry in each). That is your foundation. I like say 2 Hexmarks, 2 Reanimators, 2 Doomstalkers, and 2 Doomsday Arcs. The Hexmarks will die fast, but the enemy MUST shoot them first or they will nickel and dime your army. You could do some melee or maybe some Tomb Blades, but a Destroyer based army is just brutal now. As for cost... but a Mar3 printer and curing/wash stations, lots of rubbing alcohol and paper towels, a few liters of PLA like Resin 2.0 and download some STLs. I got the destroyers, lords, Hexmarks, and destroyer lords for less than $5 total. I bumped up the sizes on some and swapped a few parts out. I have not found a good Reanimator STL and I already had one and 2 Doomstalkers as well as the 2 Doomsday Arcs. I am not happy with how they butchered World Eaters in 9th/10th. Half my army are un-usable and they are really weak. The lack of bikes REALLY pissed me off, but I also have Havocs, Legionnaires, Chosen, Mutilators, Raptors, Obliterators... Literally I spent probably $1000 on models I have painted and can no longer use. Daemon are horrible too. I have Khorne, Tzeentch, and Nurgle. Stripping the Harald's ability from +1S to something dumb like re-roll 1s in combat was horrible. I have looked at Eldar and there are lots of mistakes, like War Walkers and Vipers can only have 1 per unit and the Star Cannon on the Wave Serpent still gets double the shots AND twin linked. They put a 5+ on the Aspect Warriors, but that will not help. They nerfed the guns so hard as well as the psychic phase. They went from pretty solid to weak. Why did the Warp Spider's guns go from S6 to S4? Eldar used to be glass cannons and now they are just glass. So I either play Necron and piss everybody off or I get my ass handed to me every game. Good job GW...

The list I want is an unending swarm list that uses a lot of Termagants with spine fists. I want to paint it in the Hive fleet hydra's scheme and play it more on the shooty, move-block enemies side of things. After that I'd picture a melee focused "zerg rush" style army, however, the onslaught box for that 2nd plan is quite rare already... limited edition shit throwing out a plan out the window again. I just hate that the new termagants in the leviathan box are mono-pose with only fleshborers. GW REALLY don't want newer players to have customization that should be auto-include... instead they point you to a 50+ bucks box for 10 termagants laughing their ass off. Fact of the matter is that I might just continue to NOT get back in the hobby after their primaris debacle.

@WirableScroll I'm doing the same thing, tried to get in at 8th edition. 9th rolled out right when I bought my 8th ed codex. Said screw this and haven't looked back till now. Got lucky when I went to my gw store and they had a leviathan box still available. Picked it up and just said "guess I'm doing this"

I pre-ordered Leviathan at one local store, and then stopped into another one a few days later and was able to pick up a second half of the Tyranid box for $80 USD. Felt worth it for the Leapers and mix of Gaunts alone. I'm painting my SM first to practice, and then its time for that Hive Fleet!

For me it's 3 Leviathan boxes, 3x extra sprues of Barbgaunts and Leapers, and to top it off 1 extra unit of Neurogaunts (they're cutest!)Combat Patrol is actually still decent, because old gants come with Spinefists, and those are arguably best option (rest is solid too).

Iv convinced one of my friends and a new player to 40k to just stay away from anything Nids thats isnt related to the Leviathan box. Theres plenty of new models to build/paint and games to play while you wait for their second wave and new codex.

How to start a Tyranids army? That's easy. Buy one of the new starter boxes, when they hit the shelves. Split the cost with a Space Marines player. Or, if you're lucky, get the Leviathan box. And add in the Datacards, and you're good to go. Expanding the 'Nids mentioned above? A Hive Tyrant. A Tyrannofex with rupture cannon. Or two of them. For ranged anti-tank. Some Warriors armed with melee bio-weapons. 2 squads of 3. More Warriors, armed with ranged weapons. 2 squads of 3, one with deathspiters, one with devourers. Some Raveners. Thorax ranged weapons optional. 2 squads of 3, or 2 squads of 6. A lot of Hormagaunts, if you want to go horde. Carnifexes. Either 2x2 Devourers, or 2x2x sets of scything talons on them. Bioplasma on the melee 'Fexes.

Is buying multiple leviathan tyranid halfs a bad idea here?
@Khobai

yeah i think youre better off with a combat patrol for the hive tyrant and warriors. you dont really need two leviathan halves because you need a lot of models that arnt in leviathan.

Can not recommend a good 3d printer enough.. There's a learning curve and it's pricey to get started but it'll save you thousands of dollars in the long run if your serious about collecting.

Step 1: Largely ignore leviathan. Step 2: buy 1 hive tyrant, buy 2-3 biovores, 12-18 Zoanthropes, and 4-6 of the Exocrine/Haruspex box then fill as you wish.

Hello new players! Please do not do this! The units this commenter is referring to are what are good for the competitive scene as of early July 2023, and that will always end up changing. Please buy the units that you think are cool, or perhaps just a more varied force. And don't buy Biovores, seriously, they are so ugly and are one of the top candidates to get a new model this year (2023)
@TyranidFerore
@TyranidFerore 11 месяцев назад
@@captainflapjax7240 The irony here being that I'm a new player, got into the hobby about 10 months ago, didnt play a single game of 9th. I actually kitbashed my own biovores for what its worth, with the hive guard kit you can do it for a fraction of the cost at relative ease. With respect to the other models - my comment was supposed to be more of a cynical stab at GW and how obvious their practices are. Leviathan was obviously a huge draw to get people into the hobby and the army itself, but unless you're buying the box because you love the specific models more than anything, they just objectively arent very good models on the tabletop if you're coming at it from a playing perspective. What is currently good, are the models that probably didnt sell much of last edition (exocrine/haruspex) or models that they want to shift stock of before a refresh (lictor/biovore/pyrovore).

Every tyranid creature is a purpose-engineered bioweapon meant to be either disposable or frighteningly efficient. So, what is the tactical advantage of the deathleaper having a f*cking skirt?

I will just pop a comment I made about his cape somewhere else though I highly doubt this much thought was put into it😅 The complex trench coat tail could serve as a form of armor to protects it's legs from attacks from behind, having a thick carapace on the back of it's legs could possibly hinder it's movement so it developed a shield. If the tail also contains a large amount of muscles and necessary skeletal structure it may even possess the ability to move the tail making it even more effective as a shield for it's lower body. I guess the trench coat could serve as a heat sink as well distributing it's body heat over the entire area of the trench coat, possibly also decreasing it's thermal signature also considering how extensive it's carpace is I guess limits it's ability to perform heat regulation like humans and many animals do. Tyranids are most likely endothermic after all. Plus he's telling the SM that they aren't the only ones that can play the game when it comes to having drip.

I feel targeted. I am specifically looking to get into 40k with tyranids. It is a shame that I'm not interested in half the units in the leviathan box (the winged prime, the neurotyrant, the neurogaunts, the psychophage, and kind of the termagaunts).
