Thank you for recommendation for the herbalism course. ❤ I did feel like more info was needed on how to set it up, how to determine what tools you need, maybe share a list of things that you can use and how they each work together, etc. And would have loved to hear more info about the ingredients you used to make you tincture and oils for those 3 that you featured. How will I know what you offer for paid services if I don’t see the value in that here. Just a thought. Thanks so much!! ❤

Can someone kindly explain the difference between a Material Medica and a Grimoire? I assumed they were the same but after listening I seemed to have misunderstood. Thank you so much! 🌸🌿

Hey there! Other people may have different opinions on this, so this is just my perspective and experience on it, so take it or leave it 😊 Also, I apologize now because it is a long ramble. I think they can *potentially* be used interchangeably, but it’s going to depend a lot on your personal practice and the info you include. For me, my practice includes all kinds of tools including candles, crystals, tarot/oracle and other divination practices, astrology, and many more. However, herbalism and aromatherapy are a huge part of my practice that I am also enrolled in school for (and have over 20 years of personal interest/self-study in). So for me, the Materia Medica of the (very numerous!) herbs and oils I learn about kind of need their own place for practical purposes. If I tried to include all this info in my Grimoire with the information on all my other tools of the craft (also very numerous)- it would just be way too big. By separating them, it’s easier to manage and it’s also more practical since it is essential to my classes as well. It helps keep me focused and organized to have it all in one spot, unencumbered by many other pages that I wouldn’t necessarily need to access at the same time. I can always cross reference both tomes at the same time if needed. Also, Materia Medica includes very specific information, which she mentioned in the video. (Like the Latin binomial, common names, identifying features, photos, therapeutic actions, active constituents, indications, contraindications, where it’s grown, what parts of the plant are used, etc) (personally, I also include cultivation and harvest/preparation information, as well as spiritual correspondences and different folklore surrounding the plant) This is pretty standard and consistent with Materia Medica you find across texts, so it does inform the kind of information you would include, whereas in a Grimoire you may or may not include all that specific information, as it can be a bit more personalized. But, if you are enrolled in any herbalism courses or are prioritizing herbalism in your practice, it’s good to have an understanding of what a Materia Medica specifically is. I personally consider my Materia Medica as part of my Grimoire (personal preference, and depending on the context of the situation I may refer to it as one or the other). I just separate mine into two books, and I also label the herbal Grimoire as Materia Medica because it identifies some of the information to found within, which is helpful if this is to be passed down to future generations. However, some people may only wish to work with a few herbs, or perhaps herbs are not primary in their craft. Or maybe they choose to include only the spiritual or folkloric aspect of a plant (which alone wouldn’t technically be Materia Medica) It may make more sense to include this information within a single Grimoire. So really, I guess Materia Medica includes specific information on the herbs. It is helpful to have it as a separate tome titled as such when herbs are a primary area of study. In a Grimoire you could certainly include the Materia Medica, but you may also choose not to, and may include different information. I think you can definitely call your Materia medica a grimoire, but you wouldn’t necessarily call a grimoire Materia medica, unless it included the information specific to it, if that makes sense. Anyway- I probably made this sound way more complicated than it is, but I hope it helps somehow! Feel free to ask any questions if you want any clarification- I’m a little fuzzy-brained this am, so apologies for a literary mess lol 😊🌿🌝🧿🔮🕯️ 😅
