One thing I wish I knew when starting Guard is you should only use one kneeling guy for the heavy weapon...the loader can stand. Buy some extra heavy weapons bases and then you can build the extra heavy weapons leftover in the sprue. You can double the amount of heavy weapons squads you can build out of the box doing this. You're welcome to those who didn't know! ;)

I got 9 teams out of (3 sets of sprues) 1 box - missile launcher on the shoulder of 1 kneeling guy, mortar on the bipod frame with 1 kneeling guy, lascannon on the tripod frame (no crew but I can fit 2 normal guardsmen on the base). If you don't glue the lascannon on you can easily switch it out with the autocannon (the old lascannons didn't have the front shield so it doesn't look bad missing)

remember you dont need to glue the top of leman russ turrets down so you can change the guns for your tanks

@@B0ltActionPenis if you used cyanoacrylic super glue, you can pop the mini in rhe freezer for a day or 2, the glue will become brittle and will easily break apart.

I just cut the things on the side, so I can easily just slide them in and out without any issue, same with my sponsons I just didnt glue any if them in and they just slip in and stay there unless you shake it or throw it...(I assume anyways I've never thrown it dont worry lmao)

3x guard start collecting boxes, 1 or 2 push fit cadians and a command squad box. Gets you 3 tank commanders, 40 infantry, 2 company commanders, and a couple heavy weapons team.

One recommendation I always make to new players looking to collect is if they have any marketable skills and friends in the hobby in need of them, they can perform services for them in exchange for miniatures. For example, I’m a graphic designer, and made one of my friends a business card in exchange for some models.

As someone who just got into 40k, and decided to go with Guard, I am happy to see a video on this to get me where I need to go. Luckily, I pretty much followed most of these tips with my initial buy. I never thought I would be a couple hundred bucks into Guard just to field a 500 point list when Marines would be like 20 models if that. My FLGS does escalation leagues, so I am trying to go on the cheap by only figuring out my lists first and buying only for those before I start branching out to "Look, I need 6 Baneblades to hang around just in case"

Guard look so handsome when theyre all painted. I started a Catachan army 3 years ago (christ). My local had a plastic bag full of Catachans for sale, with 150 models for 50 USD. The reason they were so cheap is because many of them look like they were assembled by a 5 year old. Said 5 year old looks like they tried to paint them too. I'e put a lot of effort into stripping and breaking many of them apart. Since I started playing HH I kinda dropped them but when I did use them during 7th they were great fun and having so many models painted to a single scheme looked so great on the table.

For those watching this video in the future: another great place to buy third party guard models is Wargames Atlantic. Their "Death Fields" line of plastic boxes - along with the deal they have to revive Mark Mondragon's "Iron-Core" line - make for a wide variety of future soldiers, with more on the way. Everything from Vostroyans, Steel Legion, Kriegsmen, Cadians, Tempestus Scions, and even _Squats_ can be created between these various boxes. You can even kitbash a Tallarn army by combining the weapons from these boxes with their Afghan Warriors box (because Wargames Atlantic also sell a bunch of historical and fantasy kits). Altogether a great source of guard models. As an added bonus, while sites like Victoria Miniatures tend to be roughly equal in price to GW, Wargames Atlantic's plastic kits are way cheaper.

Thanks. I started my army a few months ago and have followed your videos since you started with AM vids. I really like them. A tip for others starting. Really use your Heavy Weapon Squads kit to the max. Buy extra 60mm bases and use regular troops to get extra weapons. From a box of each and extra bases I made 3 mortars, 3 auto cannons and 3 missile launchers.

How to start a DKoK army: -Step 1: Buy a few models -Step 2: Paint them, enjoy it, order a few more -Step 3: Order a few more, repeat step 1 & 2 -Step 4: Look at your 300 bucks worth of minis -Step 5: Bite the bullet and make a list for the minis you already have, realize you only have 250 points worth at most -Step 6: Find a friendly russian to buy some specifically shaped resin from him

Back in the day I had a melta-gun guardsman with 3 marks on his meltagun. 2 green for Nurgle marine kills and 1 red for Khorne. I also put an Eldar head on a pike for my standard bearer that I painted like my friend's Eldar army.

I just started a week ago with an Astra Militarum army and searched everywhere for a "How to start" since im still new to the hobby. Thats some unlucky timing, but it helps a lot to know how i should build them so thanks a lot for that man, your channrl rly helps getting into that army. :D

I like that you use both astra militarum and imperial guard. Mostly becuase I am not the biggest fan of the name change and am a fan boy for Imperial Guard. Also I think you should have brought up the Apocalypse Spearhead detachment box. It's cheaper than the Cadian Defence Force and you get a lot of tanks in it. For the price of 3 leemans you get 3 leemans a chimera, heavy weapon squad and a command squad. A SAVINGS OF OVER 80$. Which is overall a great deal considering the Defenders of Humanity rule lets Leemans cap points if in a spearhead. A great, and deadly, way to play guard if you want fewer models. Also I think it's important to say that the Chimera model can be ran as SO much other stuff since the artillery all use the same chassis. I've got 3 chimeras I usually run as Basilisks and no one has ever given me guff about it.

I used 3rd party infantry models almost exclusively for my guard army, Mantic's Warpath range has good quality "not guard" minis that are nearly half the price when comparing combo sets ($36.99 for 2 infantry squads, 2 HWTs, and a commander)

When I was a really young kid I wanted to collect Chaos Space Marines and Tyranids and wondered why anyone would want to collect Imperial Guard. Now in my mid 30s I think that the Imperial Guards are one of the coolest armies there is. I hope to start collecting them one day.

You can convert your spare Commissars into Company Commanders with simple head and weapons swaps. Also check out Wargames Atlantic for cheaper GW compatible guard kits. £25 for 24 models if I remember correctly.

Hello nerds, My dad was super in to wh40k for the aesthetic/collector side. He never played the game, doesnt know the rules, and didnt understand army building/unit selection. So i inherited his astra militarum army but as a wh40k novice i dont know what an appropriate force would look like. He’s got 2-3 of every heavy weapon team, 40-50 assorted infantry with some sgt’s, special weapons, voxers, etc. 3 sentinels, a tank, a troop transport, 2 lts, 1 cpt, 3 commissars,3 standards, 20 kaserkyns(?), and 1 lone sniper lol. Any pro tips as to how i should approach a beginners battle. I bought the AM codex with the commissar on the cover, i found my old 1st ed rulebook with the black templars on the cover, have some plastic templates, and dice. What kind of army force should i organize them in to? Its basically like finding a box of old pokemon cards and asking how to make a good fire/fighting deck or something.

it wouldn't necessarily be all that bad. not traditionally competitive as any list that has allot of anti-infantry fire power will obviously shred your poor squishy flashlight boys, but board control wise and objective wise you'll be very well off. competitively you'll be a spoiler list for elite armies, and anything that relies on allot of heavy firepower to quickly knock down expensive hard targets as obviously, those shots will be wasted squishing puny guardsmen. this is also true for anything that's banking on bringing tons of smite spam as mind bullets are best used to chip wounds off of things worth allot of point value not a random guardsman. you'll struggle to bring down allot of hard targets, like monsters and vehicles, but on the other hand sometimes volume of dice really is quite effective and will help average things out. with 300 las guns hitting a imperial knight I mean at least a few are gonna hit something important. in general assault armies will also be especially scary, as things like khorne berserkers will happily chew through all your boys and then will be attempting to consolidate into the next squad like a game of gory pinball. it'd be a very fun meme army, but it's a trick that only really works once if your playing with the same group.

Yep, started out wanting to play pure Tempestus Scions. Scrapped that idea after facing Tau, Drukhari and Aeldari and getting tabled with ease consistently. Cadian/Catachan Artillery park with cheap screens or Tallarn TC spam seem like the only viable options to handle them.

@@Y2kha For low points (1000 or under) they are viable but anything over and they simply lack the tools to get the job done. Plasma is the bread and butter of Scions and Tau can eat that with shielddrones and then blast away you plasmagunners their next turn. Craftworlds and Drukhari are a Hard Counter to plasmaguns as well with their minus to hit modifiers. I still like My Scions but now I play them together with Cadian or Tallarn detachments.

Guard are strictly a soup army now. They didn't get enough help in the PA supplement to go solo. Everyone else's power creep was increased while guard got tossed a bone. Sisters plus guard is a strong choice. Even Space Marines with guard work without their combat doctrines.

A $15 ultrasonic cleaner and some strong dollar store cleaner will strip the paint on about 10 guys in 2hrs. Well worth the investment.

I have over 100 of just flashlight guardsmen. About 35 special weapons guardsmen. 30 heros/sergeant. I still feel it's still not enough. I want to finally get some manticores and more dedicated transports. I haven't even done a proper catachan detachment. Know that you will slowly have one of each eventually model, even if you say you aren't going to. Good luck.

at time of watching this video i have just started a Imperial guard army, so far i have 1 Baneblade, 4 leman russ, (2 demolisher 2 Battle tank) 1 start collecting Scion box, 4x10 catachen units, 1 catachan command squad, 1 catachen heavy weapons squad, 1 chimera, 50 cadian shock troops, mostly still on sprues , couple of catachen chars ( Harker & Straken) couple of sentinals & few scattered troops that i havent looked at yet, what would you say i should add to this?

Add? Are you just starting or what? Thats uhhh a lot to start with. I didn't get a baneblade until I already had a sizeable army for a couple years. Of course that was 5/6th edition and the baneblade wasnt in the main book (my favorite change in 8th tbh was putting the superheavies in the main codexes)

I also bought a lot for my CSM Army (Infantry box + Battleforcr) that were my very first models ever. Was just a joke thats why i tried to make it ridoncules with the "a whole army" thing. Also right now its probably good to have a lot of models to paint until everything normalise again.

You can build a respectable 500pt army with the Start collecting + Cadian defence force packs, then you can build from there

The start collecting box you can buy at the 20% discount. The cadian defence force box sadly not... wich is a huge difrence (84£ for 2 VS 110£ for 1) and with the price difrence between a LR and a Chimera it's even worse ( about 6£) Just go for 2 stater boxes + a command team 84+17£= 101£ with only one HW Team less and 2 commisars extra.

I am planning on making my own gaurd army by buying perry miniatures napoleonic French Infantry 40 men for $40 and then 3d printing arms with lasguns. Make some beautiful napoleonic themed gaurd.

Had a baneblade kit and some infantry lying around. Decided to hate myself and went for some converted Gryphhone pattern autocannon Chimeras for a true IFV feel. Decided to be lazy and not do plasma spam because meta is boring and I'm not about to spend money on eBay for extra plasma. Ended up with 1000 points of guard in a neat little ball of mechanized rapid fire death and mediocrity. Never going to win in some opinions but it murders primaris surprisingly well.
