The timing of this of crazy for me! I just started looking into the game and watching lore and battle reports. Thanks for covering all of the information!
My gaming store is pushing this and has 20 new players. . . I like the City States, beast men and Spartans. . . But GW shut down my beast men. . . Aside from that I play Tzeentch Daemons and Thousand Sons so flames and magic with demonic monsters. . . I liked the starter. . . Got mine for $109. . .but I didn't want the duel army box of old. . . Then the Sorcerer Kings were released. . . Magic flames . . . And I'm like perfect but a little hesitant until. . . Starter box City States vs Sorcerer Kings. . . I now have my two Conquest armies, let's go.
Thanks for an informative and useful review. Most of those new starter sets seem very useful for someone just starting any of the factions. The calculations start to become more complex if one already has all that one wants of one of the units in a set. But more plastic sprues is always better !
That is absolutely true! They are great to start, but when you start to have some of the units already (especially the expensive ones) then it becomes a much harder purchage
Thanks for your kind words! All these factions are good, but for a first faction the Old Dominion is probably the easiest to play. Though follow your heart and the miniatures you prefer! 🙂
Thanks! It is very good to start the faction in one click, but the discounts are less crazy than on the new starter set, and it locks you in a specific build. It is a good, balanced army, so it might be the best way to instantly get a varied 2000pts army, but it is not an auto-buy. If you like all the units inside sure, jump on it, but if for exemple you don't want the Eidôlon and the Inquisitors, then it is not such a great deal anymore.
Tanks a lot for this update. I started into Conquest last year and took the Old Dominion. You forgot the 12 Kheres/Moroi in the new starter set. Personally i liked the old set more, because it is what brought me into the faction - undead Legionnaires. The new set is for the final creed / cultist / mage sub faction. Actually it is quite a meta set because the Kheres and golems are considered quite good right now. But, i dont now - 6 Golems in one Starter a bit excessive for my taste. Actually i might be just a bit sad because i have no use for the new set since i already have the Archimandrite and some Bone Golems. But i dont like some of the other new startes as well - 100 Kingdoms is highly focussed on the shiny new knights, but i liked the core army approach from the 2023 set better. That said, some of the new sets arce actually great - Dweghom and City states for example.
You are absolutely right, I did account for the Moroi in the discount but I did not talk about them. And yes, the big question around the Old Dominion starter is whether you already have Bone Golems are not. About having focused Starters, it is a matter of preferences of course. I personnaly prefer thematic starters than the generalist ones such as the City-States
Just got into Conquest a couple weeks ago, me & about 5 other guys at my LGS love it and are pretty much doing Conquest full time now over the other 2 "big name" games, haha. As soon as I saw Old Dominion, knew that was the faction for me & my undead heart. So far I've almost painted my way through the old dominion half of the "old dominion vs wadruhn" first blood box I split with a friend (plus a box of Buccephaloi I bought standalone)...im currently waiting anxiously for my 5th anniversary box to arrive with the rest of my force 😊
Thank you very much for your Video. Listend to it while painting. Looking forward to start in Conqest, but i'm not sure which faction. Your video helped me to diced. (at the moment thinking between Whadrun and Socerer Kings -- i'm just a style player for the miniatures^^)
Thank you for this. This is a great breakdown and I really appreciate it. I'm all so curious what you think about the army boxes. The full 2000 point sets. Seeing as how I know nothing about the game I'm curious if those are good deals and those are units that you actually want to have. Money-wise it seems like the discount isn't as great but if it's everything all at once there's something to be said for that.
Thanks for the kind words! I’m not a huge fan of the 2k army-boxes. The savings are not as good (!) even though you invest more, and while the lists are fine, it locks you in a specific playstyle or subfaction, and you still miss some more. I’d recommend to get one or two Stafters (old, new, 2-players etc.) rather than those army sets. The only thing is that if you want to save yourself some thinking and just one-click buy an army, it works. Otherwise, always buy what you need/want after you’ve gotten yourself some starter(s)
like several others i've been looking into conquest for a few months now. Probably would have started if i can find a decent community around me that plays. i've been looking at 100 cities, old dominion, maybe dweghoms. I'm glad you talked about doubling of boxes or getting old and new starters. Is theme really important when building lists? couldn't you legally do a mixed arms ?
How old is my starter box?! I got into spires last weekend with a discount box that had six force-grown drones instead of the brutes and bound. I rarely play hordes but figured I'd go outside my comfort zone.
just got into my first game but haven't bought any yet. I saw a game where a beast I think from the Dweghoms 5th anniv starter just dominated the game. how does one counter that?
Large monsters are strong for sure, but not without weakness. They don’t degrade, so sending small units one by one won’t do. You need to weaken them with shots if you can (they are large so easy to shoot at), and then punch them *hard* before they get a chance to activate two times in combat in a row.
