It’s never too late to start but it’s crucial to have understanding that you’ll have a lot of courage and patience going towards your dreams. I used to make a lot of street photos with my film cameras and compacts when I was younger, but the closer I was to my later uni years, the harder it was to really try and pursue dreams of making photography and filmmaking my profession. So I went to medical uni to make other people happy. Now I’m 25, I lost my job and everything, and my specialty is government regulation only to most of medical specialist in my country, but I’m happy and inspired to buy a new film camera and new tripod for iPhone and finally go for my dreams again. Thank you.
I understand :( life just gets in the way but I am so happy for you that you’re picking it up again, it makes me really happy to see that my videos can inspire others to do what they love
@@princyy824 still shitty, no job, no money, but finally found relics from the past - my grandpa’s 35mm Soviet film kings Zorki-4 and Kiev-4A, grandpa used to shoot a lot on them, wanna continue this tradition - and trying myself out in scripts! Later this year already have plans to film a short with a friend and some backstage shootings on film. Never give up, I suppose.
Film making is my passion. I love everything connecting with camera, art and aesthetic. Hopefully one day I can be proud of my work, but for now it’s just me my phone and talking head on my channel.
Thank you so much! I’ve been in film for 6 years but I’ve only done photojournalism and journalistic videography so I’ve been having trouble expanding into the artistic territory of media. This inspired me to look for inspo and just jump in and stop waiting! :D
my whole life i’ve thought of how cool it would be to make my own movies/shows where i can express things i wish some people would but just recently i’ve thought “wait i could do this as a job”
I’ve only studied film and screen studies for 3 years, and had an additional 3 year hiatus gap, so I have been struggling to expand and gain experience with actual filmmaking. I want to be able to start somewhere, this really helps! Thank you
Love to see how you went briefly about your filming journey. You can see your improvement drastically change! Hope you get into film school and keep inspiring others to film! :)
I've been making videos since I was 13 and the thing is: Just start. It doesn't even matter if you have a bad camera or equipment, that's not the thing to focus on. You have to get experience and no equipment will do that for you. You have an idea, go create it! The first step is starting the journey, you will figure the rest out (equipment, research, improving).
Megan, I love your images. I'm not looking to get into the film industry or anything. But -- like you -- I learn a lot by watching others and their productions. What I got from you are two things: beautiful use of light (the way your composition places objects in direct or reflected light is very inspiring); and your pace (I always fear that a slower pace will lose viewers used to the snappy online habits we all have, but with your video I see that a gentler pace, as long as it's motivated, is just as captivating). So thank you. Oh, and I made the decision to only shoot on an iPhone, to see where I can go with it, and -- well, I'm not going to oversell the phone: it's a tool like any other camera. It has its strengths (pocket-sized, wide dynamic range, fantastic stabilization, a decent Cinematic mode in the right conditions) and its weaknesses (bokeh and skin texture not as convincing as a Sony or Canon DSLR, still poor in low light even with apps to control the ISO). So I really looked at your nighttime iPhone images with interest! I love your aesthetic.
Hi Aida ! ( I hope thats your name ) thank you so much for this awesome detailed feedback i really really appreciate it !! Yes but the most important is definitely to be yourself and portray what you want to ! and yes that is definitely true but if you are just starting out the iphone is already a really good tool to try out before getting onto those professional cameras that cost a bomb !
@@megantanart Megan, I actually have access to more pro cameras if I want (a Canon C100 with various lenses for instance), but I'm preferring the iPhone for a few reasons, all of which have to do with the sort of content I do. At the end of the day, they're all tools, good for some uses, not so good for others. But I love what you do with your Sony 7III (as well as your iPhone footage)
Every single time whenver i am editting or thinking of new idea to shoot, I instantly look back this video just to refresh my mind. Thanks you, I gonna back to basic and try shoot more with my iPhone than my camera.
Megan is inspiring me a lot to start my own YT channel, i love the way you filming and color grading! i also upload one video that mostly inspired by your work! Thank you so much Megan more amazing journey to comes!!! ❤
I had this old camera which my mom used to have (I don't use it now thou), I broke my phone's camera back then and I haven't been able to use it for more than 3 years. Which led me to use my mom's old camera, I didn't realize how much I enjoyed filming a lot of random things when I was younger. Since I didn't really tried to improve my skills and it just stayed as a hobby until I recently realize how much filming and photography is part of my daily. I'm trying to slowly go to where I think I'll feel satisfied of just being myself and get into filmmaking (though I have a long way to go, considering my hesitation and indecisiveness for my career path).
Oh wow !!! That is so cool to hear, definitely ask me if you have any questions thorughout this process. I am definitely no pro but i would love to help out a fellow filmmaker
This is one of the channels that gave me the courage to start my RU-vid channel 8 months ago about self development. Now I have 764 subs and > 300 hours of watch time. I know it’s not comparable with others but I’m still proud I started because I’ve been learning so many lessons that I could haven’t learned without getting started in the 1st place.
@@megantanart Whoever you are, I don't know you personally but I can say that you're one of the non-judgmental and open-minded people who is not fixated on tangible or external factors in order to learn from someone like me. Just because someone doesn't have a piece of paper as a credential, doesn't mean that person is not entitled to share personal experiences with the hope & intention to inspire others. Keep up with whatever it is that you're doing to improve mankind or improving your life even to a slight degree each day. This is just one part of a bigger puzzle for creating my RU-vid channel about holistic health. I literally could have died back when I was 14 years old due to major depression but here I am right now replying to you, a RU-vidr, who's full of fulfillment and dedication to help others to be a better version of themselves. I ain't better than anyone else but my old self. That's all that really makes this RU-vid thing more meaningful and enjoyable. Thanks so much for your support! I am hoping that you can join me with this endless personal development journey! :)
Definitely feeling that burnout and laziness after recently completing a month long filmmaking challenge but this is inspiring me to get back to working on new creative projects. Great video!
Love this video so much. Love how you not only tell people to start with their phones but you *show* how awesome it looks. It made me smile, can be very inspiring for anyone watching. If there’s a will, there’s a way!!!
I’m not interested in learning film making but I love seeing people talking about what they love idk why but I hope everyone who is interested in learning filmmaking starts 💕
Could you make an in-depth tutorial, on how you make your films/videos, and the resources you use when making a film/editing here on youtube, it would be great!
I just found your page on RU-vid and it really is a hidden gem! I also started out in photography around the same age and am now going to school for film. You were telling your story and there were so many times I kept thinking, “same!!!” Your notes are great for anyone starting and your visuals are just a pleasure to enjoy no matter what level. Looking forward to future stuff!
I'm android user, i start to filming myself even it's not 'cinematic' and i edit on my phone, i agree to "just start"! I've ever felt not confident to start my channel, but someone say if we start something with our simple equipment, we can practice every day to get better skills. And when we have better skills, it will be easier to improve the equipment we need. So here I am, people say my videos just get better. Btw, i love your video, thanks for the tips! 🫶
This video is a gem for aspiring filmmakers starting from scratch! The realistic advice and tips shared here are incredibly valuable. It's inspiring to hear about your personal journey and how you overcame the challenges of starting without a camera. The emphasis on storytelling, learning from online resources, and utilizing smartphones as a powerful tool showcases the importance of passion and resourcefulness in filmmaking. Thank you for empowering beginners to pursue their dreams! 🎥🌟 #FilmmakingFromZero
I'm glad I came from Tiktok. Thx for the free class! I'm a writer and photographer and I'm currently in a "skill crisis"... So watching this gave me motivation to continue! Thank you so much ♡ ur work is stunning
I’ve always been in front of the camera But I’ve always loved the thought process more I put into my videos so now I’m taking the step into videography I’m gonna start at cinematic because I love the views and pictures so much and how you can tell a story without saying anything I’m starting off with a Sony ZVF-1 ! your videos have given me so inspiration to just do it.
Hi i have a few question. 1. Do you have any tutorial for the filter/color grading? 2. What fps do u use for all of your vlog/filmaking video? 3. Any software/apps you suggest for beginner?
I will be making that tut very soon ! I use 24 fps or 25 fps and i would dedinitely suggest iMovie if you are just startign out with editing its very easy, in my next video i migth introduce somemore softwares for beginners to edit !
I’m an 8th grader going into high school next year. Ive been wanting to go to a high school for film, photography and graphic design because they are just really fun and interesting imo! The thing is tho, I don’t know where to start. This video was definitely helpful !! I dont usually take photos with my phone but I definitely want to start! I have been getting inspiration from Pinterest and using the tips from the websites and video you provided!! Tysm for your help ! :)
This is a very good inspirational video for those who doesn't know how to go through this beautiful world and not die trying. All we gotta do is start, no matter that we dont have enough resources, all we gotta do is start. Very good video, i love it, good job Megan.
I don’t really have money for equipment nor is not possible I am planning to get film equipment once I got my savings personally I don’t want to get in the industry but I do want to show people what potential I have
Thank you for the information. I Start a RU-vid Chanel with 61 years old and I want to learn more from the younger people. thank you for your video. Best wishes Siri and Uwe from Germany
@@megantanart ich habe gesehen, du sprichst auch Deutsch. Wir wollen im Mai nach Seoul, wenn Du ein paar gute Tipps für Location hast. Immer gern. Liebe Grüße Siri und Uwe
Amazing video, It helped me lot!! :)) Quick tip to improve your audio a little bit--> try to use an equalizer for the audio and wipe out the low frequencies, theres a low buzzing sound when you speak and you could just get rid of it with a simple eq. Hope it helps, and thanks again for the amazing video:)
Thanks for the tip!!! I’ll definitely try this out, this was also one of my very first videos and back then I knew pretty little about audio, I think I may know a little more now but still not great at it so thanks so much 😂❤️
I like filmmaking, but the problems is I’m a bit lazy at some moment. Especially when I just bought a 1/6 figure and planning to make a video for it despite my storyboard are not complete but I still have that visual in it. And one thing that cause me lazy is because of lacking confidence.
glad i found you cuz your work is pretty much my dream😫 i hope one day im able to a achieve my dream and convey my stories all over the world like you😁
Thank you for this, I am still trying to figure out my aesthetic, and figure out what I want to put out on my channel, I hope to pursue my dreams soon to be a filmmaker!
Thank you for your time, your knowledge, and wisdom. Thank you for passing on hope and information to us beginners. I hope to see you on the big screen one day!
I’d love to see the part two on film 🎥 making and also it just came to me. I’d like to see a film on the importance of stills 📷 when getting ready to make a film 🎞️
I've been struggling on pushing forward after finishing my 3 year 3D animation course, been stuck between the process of building a portfolio and the pressure of landing a job somewhere. All that feelin of being stuck in a loop, in some kind of "limbo", sometimes makes me wonder if Ill ever be able to pursue my other passion in filmmaking. This video gives me hope. :)
I am so so glad this video can help you. Just remember, we all have these moments and it is normal to feel like that and all of us, creatives go thorugh this
I really like how you capture people emotions in your films and I love the improvement how you slowly chose your aesthetic I always wanted to do that I feel like I’m very much live in the moment type of person so capturing emotions really does have an impact on other people to persuade and lead people through emotion
you seem to have a rich history of travel & making experiences already. it's really awesome to see. i wish you all the best with your dream :) ps: grüße aus busan, südkorea :)

Hi and thank you for your video❤ I love writing but I don’t think I’m good with technical things. The point is that when I have an idea I can’t imagine any body but myself making it real…..
Thanks for the nice video and tips on how to get started. Besides the style, it was a nice surprise to see you cooking that dish (I'm from SG) and hearing German (learning some basic German). If you are overseas currently, stay safe and enjoy yourself. Have a great career!
HAHHAH thank u so much, yes I am malaysian so growing up I ate lots of spam HAHA not the healthiest but I love it. and thank u so much! I am currentyl in Germany btw
I have found your channel by chance, thank you for such content. I am a beginner and at times it looks like i can not catch up with big sharks in the ocean. It's encouraging what you do, thank you
No worries at all, we are all still learning especially myself ! I’m not a professional but I try to spread my knowledge for those who can’t afford to go to classes and universities for film for example 🥰 i Hope my videos bring u further !
You are my favorite RU-vidr, ever. Thank you so much for your style and the ways you vlog and story tell. It’s truly beautiful and inspiring. I’m taking the leap to start, as I’ve always had a love for film. I am 33 and ready to change my story. Much love from NY ❤
I'm on that journey as well. I am yet to start but iv been making small attempts with my phone. I'm in love with film making and coming across this video has been helpful. Rooting for you @CeeTheGirl
Ahaahaah hi Chris, I speak german because i came to germany to study and that was one of the requiremnets into getting into the university i am in today.
I'm 18 and have always been attracted to the film industry but have never done anything to bring me closer to that and i feel so doubtful only starting now when everyone had started at young age
18 is such a young age so please dont feel discouraged ! When I was 18, i thot it was such an old age but when I’m 21 i think to myself that 18 was such a young age. I started taking jobs and internships only when I was 19, so please don’t doubt yourself. It’s never too late really
Thanks a lot for sharing your journey and perspective! After watching this vlog i got different ideas to take and edit a vlog in better and creative ways. Am new at filmmaking as its my new hobby , i wanna make vlogs but i keep failing and sometimes i loose confidence but from now on i hope to learn a lot new and different things from you
Thank you so much for sharing all of this with us ❤ Since you asked us what we'd like to see in your next videos, it would be incredible if you could talk about music in videography - filmmaking. I really want to use specific songs I love, but except if the artist answers to me directly, I suppose I cannot use their songs on RU-vid or for bigger projects. I know about some music licensing platforms but from what I saw or should I say heard, they don't have the artists and songs I like...what can we do in these situations? I would love to be able to use musics that are let's say more movie musics, not just a background music for a vlog style video...
Heyyy thanks so much !!! I actually have a vidoe on how to use music in your films but regarding that problem, platoform like Musicbed have great up and coming artists ! You could also used Lickd if you’re thinking of buying licenses for famous songs from artists. That’s what I did for a recent vlog as well
Such a great video. I think the best thing is to just do! Try fail and learn! Thank you for this video with basic and affordable options! You can use your phone, a go pro, many photo cameras do video as well and you can buy great camera used for very little! Loved the bts!
😮 dein deutsch ist so schön...Ich bin ganz aus dem Häuschen ❤ vielen Dank für deine motivierenden Worte mit dieser zauberhaften Stimme. Liebe Grüße aus der Uckermark🎉
Hi - Thanks for inspiring me to try cinematic videos with my iphone. You have great style and lighting, and this year I'm going to try and to experiment with lighting and camera angles etc. Thanks!
hi! as a young aspiring filmmaker, this is such an inspiring video! i was just wondering what LUTs/filters (if any) you used throughout the video? (would definitely appreciate a video on color grading in the future!) :)
I would love to learn more about the practical elements of film making such as apps you use, editing 101 for beginners and such. I love this video and I thought your behind the scenes vid was great!
Ohhh I’ll probably mention more of them in my next videos but I also mention them quite a lot in my other videos on my page already if you’re interested :) and thank you !!!
Hahaha thank you :) I hope you enjoyed KL ! Fun fact : a lot of us speak fluent English because we learn it pretty intensely in schools. Cuz we were colonized by the British 😊 that’s why English is also my mother tongue !
This is amazing!! I love how in depth this video is!! this is really helpful for someone who just got their first camera for Christmas this year LOLL😅😅💖💖💖Also I was wondering if you have a tutorial for the greenish/blueish filters that’s included in this video? Like for example 0:22 0:28 5:14 5:44 5:36 4:11 they’re so beautiful and it really adds a movie feeling to the videos!! 💖💖💖
thank you i really wana get started and learning more about all this stuff i yeah i dont want to have that mindset where i think i am too late and find some things i still think i would love to do or learn and make a life out of it rn im 20 and need to get moving on something i really wana do and to make life living out of too
U don’t have to make it when Ure 20 ! i think some people overestimate 20, 20 is where u start exploring and finding ur passions so don’t pressure and don’t rush, you’re doing just fine and you’re still young !
This made me feel better of considering on starting my career in film/ photography. I’m 18 and I feel like I’m contemplating if I should pursue my career in film/photography or do it on the side but seeing your work reminded me of how much I love the industry and is truly inspiring making it into a career. Although I’m quiet stuck if I should minor in it or major. Do you have any tips where to start?
Hi Briana, thats so amazing to hear and im so glad my content can help u! Why don't you start filmmaking yourself at home, learning it on the internet and see if you're further interested in film? If yes, then why not go for it !
