A great business analyst understands the value of user stories in any agile software development project. Writing good user stories is a sought after and much-needed skill that can make collaboration between different stakeholders in a project much more cohesive. But what are user stories? In short, user stories are a way of capturing requirements that are commonly used on agile software development teams. Understanding the benefits of user stories, how they fit into the BA workflow, and how agile development and user stories relate, can set you apart from other BAs and save stress and frustrations later in a project.
So how do you write a user story? The cornerstone of a user story is a single statement in the following syntax: “As a [user], I can [do something] so that [perceived benefit].” When working with gathering agile requirements and user stories, you’ll find it much easier to communicate with different stakeholders when having all your user stories follow this syntax. In this video, we’ll cover an example of a user story, the acceptance criteria for user stories, and how wireframes with user stories can be beneficial. By the end of this video, and with the template we’re giving away, you’ll start to understand how to use user stories as a business analyst, and how to write user stories so you can utilize them in your next project.

Hi Laura, Could you create a BRD when capturing the requirements and then build user stories from this? .....If you was assigned a new project and your gathering the requirements would you document this before building the user stories? Thanks :)

We would advise starting with a Scope Statement instead of a BRD, and then defining your business processes / use cases, and using those to break-down into user stories. A traditional BRD faces many of the same challenges as a product backlog / user story list, as it's difficult to analyze the flow in the long list of requirements. You can find out more about the BA process in this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-cHJkPdBuF4E.html&t
