My long term storage is vacuum sealing the wheat in 1 pound portions them freezing them. After 24 hours in the freezer they go into buckets. I belong to a coop that orders 4 times a year and we share the shipping cost. I generally buy 40 pounds of hard red winter wheat and 20 pounds of rye. I use a mockmill 200 and highly recommend it.
I used to make all the bread 🍞 we eat, then I stopped ✋️, because they said it was bad to eat. Thanks to you 😊 🙏 I found Sue Becker, and now I am now baking bread 🍞 again 😀 😋. Thank you for all you do for us 😀 😊
I'm new to milling grains for baking...my Dad had a big mill he used to use to make stock feed...so, I love the intentionality of making things from scratch, canning, preserving. Just ordered a Kitchenaid Grain Mill, since we're empty nesters now. I ordered a small amount of hard red & white berries from Palouse to get my feet wet... Thanks so much for all your informative videos! They are practical, informative, & very straightforward. Just the way I like it! Thanks A'Bunch!
I'm definitely new to all of this! I have recently been looking into having a small farm and garden for my family. Canning and making my own bread is something I have wanted to do for a while. I'm glad you started this channel, it will definitely be useful to me!! :)
Thank you so much for the comment! And good for you for having such wonderful goals. We have had a homestead now for almost 7 years (Two different locations) in Florida, and it is certainly a journey! With everything that happened in 2020, I have never been more thankful for this lifestyle that we have chosen. I am so passionate about others being more self-sufficient in as many areas as possible even if that just means growing herbs in your window apartment lol
Thank you for taking the time to share. It is nice that you ask for our feedback., lots of ppl on line posting videos have their comments OFF, disabled., . . .
I am just beginning to hear and learn about milling. I emailed you with a question and you have responded. Thank you so much! This is one amazing subject that I want to learn more about. I have subscribed to your channel, watched your interview with Elizabeth at Farm Fresh Wheat, watched Bread Beckers, so you can see how interested I am in receiving some wheat berries. Thank you for sharing all of you information.
I am new to milling. I have been watching your channel and just received my wheat. I also have a Kitchen Aid mixer so got the grain mill attachment. I am looking forward to making my 1st loaves this weekend. I want to bake healthier foods for family and friends.
Getting 1 or 2 bucket wrenches, about $3/a piece, is a great way to save your frustration and nails/fingers with opening bucket lids. In an emergency you also don't want to be getting upset at something like opening a bucket lid, you'll have other frustrations. I typically keep one on top of one of the buckets which are in long term storage and one in a drawer in the garage, near the food buckets.
@Giselle Burningham happy to hear this. Keep one secured with duct tape on top of the most visible bucket of food thats in eyesight and within reach and the other one keep in a drawer with your tools/garage to open all sorts of other buckets. This has helped many times with buckets of wet plaster, paint, etc
By far this answered most all of my questions! I am so pleased with this video. I feel like now I can move into this new more self sufficient lifestyle confidently. Thank you for sharing your knowledge!🙂
Been looking to start a small prepper pantry for the zombie apocalypse lolol or inflation or pandemic- too late. But what to buy and where to get it has stopped me in the past. This is the information I needed thanks
I came across Sue Beckers bread video. I was looking for homemade bread recipes and the rest is history. I have found you too. I have been milling for 2 months now. Learning from both of you guys. 🥰🥰🥰🥰 love it. P.S. I’m also in Florida ( central fl that is) 🥰
When I went to buy my Bosch Universal Mixer in 2020 I went to Breadbeckers and Pleasant Hill Grains but like EVERYONE at the time they were sold out and didn’t know when it could come back in stock. Took me forever to find one and even then I had to wait about 2 months for it to get to me.
Yay! That’s awesome! Glad this video has helped. Look for one tomorrow coming out that talks about all the different grains, what to use them for, the combinations I like, etc 😄 It’s definitely info I wish I had when I first started milling. Since you’re already a seasoned pro baker, you’re light years ahead of where I was so you should do great!
I looked at the Bosch but got a Kitchenaid 6qt Professional 16+yrs ago. Azure Standard is awesome!! They've expanded their products so much since the first time I heard of them 20yrs ago when I lived in the PNW!!
Ah so happy you've known Azure for that long! I only heard about this around 7 years ago and they weren't even delivering to Florida then. So happy they are now!
It’s so funny, before I found your channel and started investigating all of this milling your own grain business I found Azure and I’m getting my first order next week. Very cool system that they have. Also, before I found Azure, I found that several of the natural stores around where I live carry wheat berries in bulk. They were willing to sell me 25 or 50 pound bags and said they would special order it for me and they didn’t have it in stock so that might be an option for people also. When I looked into ordering grains online it was costing me as much for shipping as for the grains. Have a great day! I’m going to be using mylar bags with oxygen absorbers and 5 gallon buckets to store my grains. 😊
I love making bread. I am interested in storing and using wheatberries. I do not have a mill yet because this is new to me. Thanks for your information. The rice in mylar bags is going in the freezer tonight!
I am new at it but I’m not. I grew up cranking that mill handle! Now I’ve been gifted a small mill and I have done a few batches, it’s too expensive to buy in small batches so I was looking for a place to buy 25 pounds. Which sounds a whole lot for one person and a cat! Wonderful video, I just happened to stumble on you today. I’m glad I did. Looking forward to future videos
I'm new to all this as well, With Covid and such and all the empty grocery stores it makes sense to me, plus my fiancé and I have always dreamed of owning a small 10 to 20 acer farm and being able to grow our own food and buy in bulk etc., so figured I get a jump start on it now so out to learn as much as I can.
Absolutely love my Bosh, I bought mine 5 years ago with my Komo mill. Both are great machines, they have been gathering dust for awhile due to lack of good tested recipes. Thank you for starting your channel and sharing your information! Yes I am binge watching your videos! Azure is my go to for grains and much more.
Thank you so much for your comment! Having my Bosch makes things so much easier for me with a large family. So glad these videos are giving you inspiration to try things out in the kitchen!!
I just found your channel as I am trying to learn more about using my stored grains ( mostly wheat). The funny part is, I grew up on a wheat farm and I realized I don’t know much about it beside growing and harvesting it. Lol
Hi, newbie here! I've been binge-watching yours and so many prepper videos, and I wanted to say first that I really appreciate how concise and clear yours are. I do have a couple of questions, though, on storing the grains, if you happen to swing back through and see this--I realize this is an older video, but... I have a 25 lb bag of soft white wheat berries (my first!), which I stuck in the freezer (in its original paper-type bag) before hearing that we don't need to do that for wheat. Now I'm concerned that I've introduced moisture/condensation into it. Before putting it into long-term storage, should I spread it out on (a million) cookie sheets or something to let it dry out? Is that a thing? Also, I have seen a lot of other preppers pour the wheat berries into 5 gallon mylar bags inside the buckets, add oxygen absorbers, then heat-seal the mylar, then put the gamma lids on the buckets. Your process appeals to me because it's so streamlined, but is there an argument/need for using the mylar and oxygen absorbers? I live in WA state if that makes a difference. Thanks so much for your time and for all the hard work you're doing teaching people what to do on these topics. I have absolutely no idea what I'm doing and have been a bit panicked. The last few years taught me one important lesson, and that's that my hubby and I are completely useless in a zombie-apocalypse situation, so we're trying desperately to catch up now! I feel a little calmer after watching your videos. :)
I ordered wheat berries from my local feed store. Non GMO. They were seed berries ...the wheat needs to be cleaned but well worth the price. Thank you for you information.
Have you learned about the kitchen aid milling attachment. That’s what I have with a new electric sifter to get the grains out if I want. I could use help here ? I bought white seed grains. If that’s what they are called. But never used them. Will they still be good.? 2 years old.
The freezing the corn is a great step for practically all grains purchased meant for longterm. Its not worth the risk in 10 years opening a container and seeing its half eaten! If i get bulk grains in the winter I put them in animal proof plastic bins and sit them outside for a few days to freeze and kill off any tiny hitch hikers. In the warmer months ill borrow space in my floor freezer and place the bags straight in there, and allow to be frozen for a few days. I give the bags time to thaw and adjust to the room before packing into longterm containers to prevent packing grains with condensation inside the container / mylar bag. Will also use desiccant packets and home made ones from cat litter and old stocking in the larger long term bins and bags.
There's nothing wrong with going the extra mile. Better safe than sorry. But with wheat berries, they don't need to be frozen before hand. Corn and rice yes. Wheat berries no. I have actually done a video dedicated to storing grains. You can check it out here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-cKWXYSNoQ_Y.html
I’m still very new to all this so I’m sorry if you’ve already answered these questions and I haven’t seen them yet: - I see you’re in Florida like me. How do you recommend storing grains long term if you don’t have space in your house and you don’t have a basement. Surely the garage isn’t a good place since it gets so hot? - How long does a bag of wheat berries last in the kitchen? I just ordered my first 5 lb bag to try out but I’m not quite sure when I’ll get to actually making my first loaf because I need to order a few other supplies. But I keep reading that the berries are getting harder to come by so I wanted to grab myself some while I could! How long will they keep in my pantry?
Ha! How cool! A few years ago at a church we were attending, a new family started coming. I then found out later she was a drop coordinator for Azure in our area! Small world :-)
My struggle is that we’re on SNAP. But recently, it’s not making the whole month anyways. So it might be time to use Azure Standard to get our bulk foods 🥰
It's a manual Corn Grinder Flour Maker Wheat Grain Nut Mill Grinder Kitchen Tool from Alimart for 44.99. Works just fine for all types of grains an I have had no trouble with it.
I never knew about the freezer part- I stored about 75 lbs rice in Mylar bags, two five gallon buckets, humidity packets and gamma lids? It’s been 5 years...
It's possible it is fine, but I would check on it as scary as that may sound ha I believe if you use oxygen absorbers it does the same thing - prevents bugs from hatching!
First time watching this video due to having milled soft white wheat in a vacuum sealed container on the counter for weeks . It doesn’t smell at all . I don’t know if it is safe to use
I've actually never heard of that company before. That's great you have a hand mill! Which one did you buy? I'm still trying to figure out which one to get myself.

What grain do you start with if you are just getting started with grains.. For breads and hot cereal.. if you have a video list the name of it and I can search for it..
For bread, start simple. You need a hard red or hard white wheat for your yeast breads. Soft white wheat for your bake goods. For a hot cereal, we consume a lot of oatmeal around here. My favorite oats are quick cut oats because they cook faster. I did do a video about the different grains, what they do, and my favorite combinations. You can check it out here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-5xwJXgWvH10.html I don't cover ALL grains because there are just so many. But these are the most well known :-)
There is a church that may be getting a 2000lb bunch of grains from azure in order to help people when there is a food shortage. How can they store the grains? The little 5 gallon buckets aren't too economical for such a huge amount. Will big barrels work if it is stored in a warehouse?
What about just getting normal tote containers from Walmart? Like the ones used for storing clothes? As long as the bugs can't get in the lid, I think it would be fine right if it was stored in a wear house?
Two things to keep in mind: food containers with food lids to keep moisture and pests out. So whatever large containers that are food safe and will keep those items out will work. And that’s awesome they’re doing this!!!

How do you remove ergot from wheat/rye? Does Winnowing work? Can you still use the wheat berries if ergot was in it? Thanks for any input! Poisoning loved ones from my bread would Not be good😲🥺 We have been enjoying you videos 👍
You mean what kind of wheat? It depends on what you would like to make. You might find this playlist helpful: ru-vid.com/group/PLVw-QuPI1UHmTJxZcT-Mt37N9ogK2UHk8
This is great info! Thanks!! I'm inspired to get my mill out. Haven't used it in years. I have some grains that are around 8 years old. They were frozen and stored well, with the screw lid 5 gal bucket, do you know how long things like that stay good, or how can i tell if its still good? Thank you!
Wheat berries, so long as they’re stored well away from moisture and pests, store indefinitely 😄 They have found wheat berries in Egyptians tombs, took them and planted them and they grew! And until they are cracked open, all the nutritional value is still inside. So thrilled this has inspired you to get to milling your own grains!
The comment on the grain that I was buying, which is organic said best use within six months. Then that made me sorry that I bought so much at once. But you’re saying that you can keep them for much longer.
I don't understand. You want whole wheat that isn't like whole wheat? I think maybe you've had some poorly prepared whole wheat in the past and didn't enjoy it, but you know it's good for you. Is that right? If so, you've GOT to try my recipes. I didn't like a lot of the recipes out there either, so I worked on them for over a decade. Now, I can't keep my kids off of my breads! And you know if a kid will eat it, it's TASTY!
Excuse me, but YOU CAN GET BULK GRAIN AT WALMART. I just got 25lbs. of Red Wheat delivered after buying it online. Look for grain delivered, not picked up. You can also get it at Amazon.
Wheat berries will last pretty much forever so long as they are free from moisture and pests. I did a video after this all about how to store grains! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-cKWXYSNoQ_Y.html
I would like to store my white rice in mylar bag but I have a question that when I will open the bag the taste and smell of it would be the same or different, and how long would it last after opening? please any of you help me.
I actually did a video about storing grains! You can check it out here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-cKWXYSNoQ_Y.html As far as the taste, mylar bags are there to preserve the taste. However, with grains, this usually isn't an issue. :-)
How about a “plan C?” Azure doesn’t have a drop out point anywhere near me… and the postage costs more than what the grain costs. I’m in the NorthEast so you’re second suggestion isn’t good either.
I haven't tried this company out because I do not live in the Northeast, but I just came across this grain CSA that's in the NE USA! See if this works out for you! localgrain.org/
I get confused about which wheat berries to buy, because I have seen different ones. I want to plant some as apparently they are good for the soil and then I can use them for cooking. Also if I plant them, how to know when they are ready to harvest.
I have never personally planted wheat berries, but do know that the turnout of the wheat will be based on where you live. As far as knowing what wheat berries to buy, I did a video about that! You can check it out here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-5xwJXgWvH10.html
you are awesome, love that you include God in your videos.. I also order from Azure Standard and I live in Southern Oregon . Have ordered from them for years now, there awesome people. I saw in one of your videos you are selling a book, can you email me that please. Thank you
