I am by no means a *drummer*, I'm a guitarists first and foremost but I've learned how to drum mainly by just air-drumming or tapping along to songs on my legs, I haven't been behind a kit very many times at all. The biggest difficulty at first imo is learning to separate all your limbs from one another, allowing you to then go on to learning effectively.

at work there is a hole in the shop counter about 3 inches wide. I taped over it because shit kept falling in it and then started tapping the tape with pens and then plastic rods from toy windmills. It became my snare drum. now I rearrange the shop to make sure products that sound good when I hit them with my windmills are near each other. I now have a kit at work that consists of 3 different sizes of fudge boxes, two body boards and a metal cage full of frisbees. rock n roll mofos. but by night i play guitars and synthesizers...

i experimented drumming without a kit for years, without even thinking of it, always tapping the wheel when in traffic jams, at work or whatever. i've been playing guitar for 19 years, but never tried drums. When i finally bought my electronic kit, the most basic technique was already there in 5 minutes and i could already jam to simple songs with a bigass smile on my face ^^ So yeah, you really don't need anything to start at all. can't buy coordination and tempo at the shop! Great advices, that really do work

I started playing after watching one of your videos (i think it was "how to practice drums" or something). If it wasn't for you i probably wouldn't have started. Just wanted to thank you man :D

Listening to and learning your drum parts from dorje and toska has made me really improve since I first found you, transposing it to a single pedal was hard work at the time😂thanks for the challenges dude, keep it up

This video is really interesting, I started playing on a Guitar hero drumset 8 years ago, and I just upgraded from there, I've never owned a practice pad though.

I love how optimistic and positive you look/sound, it really cheers me up. I'm definitely trying to get an E-drum kit one of these days,but I wonder if 19 years old isn't already too old to build a proper technique (I've been air drumming since I'm 14)

Mephiston thanks for the answers man. Little update: I bought an E-drum kit two weeks ago. I started to practice with the help of RU-vid. I'm doing great. I can almost play One, I'm also trying more subtle tracks to train my hi hat game a little bit. I really have trouble improving my hitting speed though. My snare stands pretty low but I don't think it's the cause.

+TMmodify That's awesome dude, the fun part about starting out with anything new is making do with what you got, then doing what you can to improve it. Check out ben's practice pad routine for his warm-up, as it should help you work on your speed and consistency. Also, look around and find some videos on drum rudiments, since they're pretty much the drum stroke fundamentals and will help you with your stroke consistency on any drum surface, and pay attention to singles, doubles, rolls and paradiddles. I know vic firth do a poster you can buy in a pack to put on your wall (i made my own, though). Keep up the good work, and have fun!

my father does worship at my church and owns many many instruments including drums. I can play them all but drums; I've always wanted to learn to play them and I used to try but it's just that I want to play songs accurately immediately and it's hard for me to take my time to listen to a song and learn it over time like with other instruments.

Hey Ben, ive been drumming for about 11 months - self taught, and i am getting a new kit Mapex kit and leaving my beloved starter kit behind and to celebrate i wanna cover All by your amazing band and put it on facebook for all my friends and family to see because they have been asking about my progress, anyways i have gotten half the song perfect but you defiantly stepped up the difficulty past the second half of the song and i am having trouble, there are absolutely no covers on RU-vid and you've made covers of your own songs but not All yet and i would love it if you could help a brother out haha Anyways, you've got yourself a new sub and another person buying your album the day it releases!

Great tips really great tips. I think you forgot one thing, or one thing I want to add: you can start playing on your body too! your stomach and your legs and your feet they can all make different sounds that mimic a drum set and that's still real practice!

Your sound has a slight reverb which is probably to do with the room and not enough sound dampening.. but I like that. Like a slightly muffled tom. Lol. Sounds great.

As a practice pad costs just as much as a snare would (at least here) i'll continue with the mouse pad/a ball :D

Ahoy Ben! Great vid and advice! I started on Planter's Peanut cans with my fingers in 1981! Yes, I'm quite old!!! I thought the mic sounded good also! I've never seen quite an electronic kit like yours. Did you build it yourself essentially? I'd sure like to know what it is. Thanks!

Hey Ben, just wanted to know. is it better to get a cymbal pack or individualy buy each cymbal? especially if you want cymbals from different series. because I am also a Sabian guy and have a setup in mind but it is so much cheaper to just pick up a set.

Ben, I know it's an old video, but as a guitarist I watch a ton of your videos and even though I don't play drums, they're fascinating. I'm debating on whether or not I should pick it up, part of me feels like it will help me understand how everything fits together in a band (if I ever get in one), the other says don't bother because I'll probably never be able to find other musicians. what's your take?
@Mephiston
@Mephiston 7 лет назад
the whole point of the video is that it doesnt cost you anything to start tapping on your desk with your fingers, and that's a good place to start. You'll never know if it helps unless you give it a go, so fire it up and see how you feel.

Ben Minal Awesome, that sounds really useful! I've been trying to put together a recording setup on a very tight budget recently, and have found it really difficult to find a step by step guide on how to actually set one up and use it! I never know what gear to buy or what the best way of recording various instruments is

@Mephiston
@Mephiston 7 лет назад
Rockband/guitar hero drums are as good for learning drums as they are for learning guitar; it's a good approximation for starters, but its very cramped and can form bad habits before long. Expect that you'll be spending time re-adjusting your posture and everything once you get an actual kit.
@RENX5
@RENX5 7 лет назад
+Mephiston Agreed. I learned the basics of drumming with the first Rock Band, I can say that it helps a lot with your coordination and it's perfect to learn patterns, it gets you to know how does drumming works, BUT when I switched to an actual drum set I wasn't dynamic at all and didn't have a proper wrist technique so... Yeah, I'd say that getting Rock Band is a good idea as long as you're aware of the basic techniques.
@Mephiston

Watching youtube videos like Ben's also helps, because you can slow them down and pause them to examine technique, too.
