What an eye opener! This is such an efficient way to start working on jazz standards. Understanding each and every note you construct the chord with. Thank you very much. Greatly appreciated.
This is an absolutely brilliant lesson. Well paced and easy to follow. You present a very practical and efficient approach to creating a good jazz piano sound from a lead sheet. This is one of the best lessons for this on RU-vid.
classical pianist here and thanks for breaking it down. sometimes jazz pianist just say "ok play the Ab7+9 on here and Adim there" as if I know what the hell you're talking about haha. I figured out how to find the 3 and 7 easily now just need to know my keys enough to drill through all 12 keys to be comefortable to "sight read" any song in the fake book
Hi Olly, saw this and realised I was making hard work of arranging a tune. This is a methodical approach that somehow makes it easier. Once again I'm in your debt, love your work!
Thanks demonstrating a nice and melodic 3-step approach to begin playing jazz standards. Many other systems start off too complicated for intermediate players. I believe that I can teach myself your simpler method.
OMG Wow. Very practical, construction of the extensions as you worked through this lesson with us, plus the essential can-add/can’t-add rules for each chord that you dropped as we listen to you work. - I thought I heard my own voice considering where to find this-or-that tone because I’m sure I am going to construct in this same way.
Thank you! I learned a lot from this video. I'd love to see a video on comping for yourself- splitting up the chords and playing them more rhythmically.
Great tutorial a must for beginners, I have been playing for years and I wish I could have started with this lesson ,it has changed the way I am now starting to voice the chords , never been able to catch the fish but now I feel I have got the ‘hook’ to catch the fish thanks Olly hope you can post more lessons on the standards D
What a great bit of teaching Olly, you break it down in a great manner, I have been trying to get my head around this for the past year, especially when to play all the chords or how to pull the melody out, this is exactly what I needed, a great lesson. Thank you, you have made me a happy man
Really helpful video Olly and very well explained. I just got my first real book (Christmas songs :p ) and i love this step by step method. Helps make the 7th chords seem less daunting and i like the gradual build up aspect.
Thank you Olly! this step by step tutorial is awesome. A cristal clear system to approach this book. A good way to begin learning. Whats at first seems too difficult to understand becomes easier with this tutorial. Thank you again for sharing. Suscribed at once!
Oh yeah I feel you. I think about songs with a lot of changes. If you're good with your harmony then if you just making the changes, that's like a big part of the battle especially if it's fast but however on the flip side of that is good to play songs with less chanes and learn how to voice chords over a simpler possibly as slower harmonic structure
That was a great lesson on adding color tones to the already existing 3rd and & 7ths. Very useful indeed. I came upon this video quiet by accident. and am glad I did so! I have many Lead sheets and was kind of juggling with those to find the correct chord structures to sound more jazzy. Thank you. I believe this is open voicing harmony.? If you can, could you do a lesson on adding upper structures giving a jazz piece more color. Perhaps song like "Wonderful tonight' (sung by Micheal Buble) or 'I ve got you under my skin' (sung by Katherine McPhee or Carly Simon) . Much appreciated.
Thank you for your comment Ajitha! Yes you are right that these can also be referred to as open voicings. An upper structures video would be a great idea, i will try to do one on this soon
After hours and hours of private and on-line instruction I find your approach much less restrictive and uncomplicated. I have been drowning in voicing rules, exceptions to 7-3 under melody, open versus closed voicings, rootless, 251AB, major and minor!. Once the essential root, harmony (7-3), and melody are nailed, simply add the extensions that sound good with the voicings that sound good. Very clear instruction and good use of the orange keys. Good method to start a standard. Thanks.
Could you explain the modulations in the song? what is the harmonic logic? I see some II- V- I or II - V , II - V but what happen in Bm7 Bb7?? or Am7 Bbº7??
Hi Diego - for Bm7 Bb7, the Bb7 is a tritone substitution for an E7, so it is essentially functioning as a II-V. For Am7 Bbo7, The Bbo7 is acting as a passing chord to link to the Bm7 (Bbo7 can be used as a substitute for F#7, which is the V chord of Bm)
Thank you. I want to do this. I want to try this with Jazz standard Sunny. Should I always try to make the melody note the highest pitched note? Do you recommend the Real Book or Fake book as a source of song lead sheets?
Hi, thank you for the comment and glad you found it useful. Yes, the melody note should be the highest note (our ears hear the top note as the melody). I'd recommend the Hal Leonard Real Book as pictured in the thumbnail for the most accurate and up to date lead sheets, but really any book with lead sheets is ok for practising this method!
Hello Olly and thank you so much for you video. you really helped me a lot. i have a question, i found a "Chord Symbols Sheet" on the net and i started practicing from it before playing ( wanted to memorize combinations) and there's one problem, in the "Chord Symbols" guide, its using the the Fifth of the chords, but in your playing ( and almost everywhere else) you exclude the fifth. i wanted to know is that an unwritten rule? that everyone knows? Because when i add the fifth it doesn't really sound like jazz.
Hi Nima, thank you for your comment and glad you found it helpful. Yes it's common when voicing jazz chords to leave out the fifth. You can certainly include it if you wish but it's not essential to have it in. The only time I would definitely include the fifth is if it was a chord with a b5 in (for example, a minor 7 flat 5 chord). I hope that helps!
"A-7" is the American way of writing "A minor 7". The dash means minor. "A7" would be dominant7, and Amaj7 would be major7. There's different ways of notating chords
Hi - It is in G major yes, but it moves into different keys throughout the piece. For example when you have Fm7 ,Bb7 , it has moved into the key of Eb major
So useful thx a lot!. Btw i have a question for you. This playing style only for just 1 person play for? i am confused cuz u re playing also 1. degrees so bass player may gonna be upset about that? so should practise like your style and if i'm playing with a band is a good idea to play 7 instead of 1? thx a lot!
Hey! Yes these voicings are generally for solo playing, but you can simply leave off the root if playing with a bass player, so either have the 3 or the 7 as the lowest note!
