I have watched A LOT of gardening videos on RU-vid, but this series is on track to be the most comprehensive, well-produced, and clearly demonstrated set of beginner gardening videos. You address many different scenarios, suggest practical tips to employ, educate with a little bit of science, and a overall have a ton of charm. Your work on these videos is truly a gift to us gardeners.

One tip for you on the carrot seeds. Carrot seeds do not like to get dried out. So keep the soil where you put the carrot seeds moist at all times or your germination rate will be spotty. Sometimes I use either a shade cloth that I might double or triple over in thickness or landscape fabric to keep the seeds from drying out as easy (something to block the sun). Just lay the material over the seeds, sort of like what you did with the cardboard and just check on them and once you see the seeds germinating, take the fabric off, but keep it moist until all or most of the seeds have germinated.

I use egg cartons to start my seeds. As for the styrofoam ones, I poke a hole in the bottom for drainage, but I find I don't need to do that with the cardboard ones due to evaporation.

Great episode, I thought I would comment to let everyone know that you can get good results with potting mix, but really great results with a dedicated seed raising mix. Seed raising mix has smaller particles so it lets the seedlings grow a bit better than potting mix, which tends to have larger bits of bark, etc in it. More expensive, but better germination rates in my experience.

Only just recently discovered your earlier/older videos (really enjoyed the ones on olive oil & asparagus). Now thinking about restarting our vegetable gardens. Would be very interested to know more about your raised garden beds. I built one several years ago, but it had degraded so much (rot and termites), that I had to break it down this last year. During it's height of use, we had cucumbers, tomatoes, zucchini, onions, Romaine Lettuce with varying degrees of success. Tomatoes were the biggest disappointment due to heat (they didn't set) and hornworms. For the last few years, we've enjoyed much greater success growing tomatoes in containers on our west facing porch; being much easier to maintain (just outside the front door), pollinate, weed, prune, harvest and (remarkably) no hornworms! I'm currently rethinking the raised bed construction material alternatives i.e. Concrete cinder blocks, pre-made galvanized (Birdies) modular raised beds, etc. Would also appreciate knowing your general location i.e. growing zone, as we monitor the progress with your new series. We're in central Arkansas - Zone 5. Love your positive, high production value style of videos. The outtakes are fun, as well.

Hi Nicole! Loooove this episode with your son ❤️. I live in Indonesia, in the southern hemisphere just 1° south to the equator. And now I stay in Bali that just 0 - 1 meter above sea level. If we start gardening at our backyard, than absolutely we can't plant except the brassicas and nightshades. Due to our position in equator, many plants, carrots and potatoes, for instance, can't be planted just like that except you are at least on 500 meters above sea level. Backyard gardening in Indonesia of course happens with the seeds that produced for tropical hot climates. I mostly used Panah Merah Brand, from East Meet West Seed Company. I love your gardening episodes, Nicole, although I miss your HDIG episodes also. Stay healthy and safe. Kisses from Bali. Laila.

Use the cardboard rolls from toilet paper and stand them up in your tray as individual planting cells. You can even plant them out without removing the plant from the tube as the cardboard will disintegrate in the soil. I've never done this myself (am new at gardening) but saw this in a video on RU-vid. You might want to cut the tube a bit shorter.

And when planting squash/zucchini, plant the seed standing up, with the tip up. They germinate faster. If you plant squash/zucchini seeds flat/laying down, they may rot before they germinate as too much water hits the flat sides, and the termination starts at the base of squash seeds. Just an FYI.

I had just a few questions I noticed you used carboard do you think it might be helpful or worth it to spray paint it black it so warms up more? Are you going to make a video on planning for future years? I know corn needs more nitrogen and so after planting corn in a feild (assuming they didn't use companion planting) some farmers will plant beans to add nitrogen. And are you going to make a video on companion planting? Thank you so much for this series I can't wait to see all the upcoming episodes.

If you are using ordinary light bulbs you need to use cool white, or daylight temp bulbs for seedlings. Warm temp bulbs will cause the seedlings to stretch. It's best to poke holes in trays and let them drain so that water doesn't stagnate at the bottom. This will become apparent when your house becomes infested with gnats. 🌱

Thanks for this video. I just started to germinate seeds and I have tons of doubts. Can you give me some tips for seeds care when you live in the tropical weather? I mean usual temperature is 29°C to 38°C most of the time where I live.

Nelly, have you planted your seeds indoors or outdoors? Indoors, forget the heat mats -- you won't need them (this is likely obvious, sorry!). Outdoors, keep an eye on moisture -- don't let the seeds dry out in the hot sun.

Wah!! Heat pads? Sunlight indoors? Nah!! Just find anywhere on the ground that gets hit by light and scatter those pots to those sunlight spots... you only need to step over them or walk around them once in a while :) haha!! I have a North facing house as well, and we just left our seed pods in the middle of the room.

What do you do in the offseason when the weather doesn’t permits growing plants? Would you invest in some type of greenhouse

Grow year-round indoors. Always the same temperature for leafy greens. Don't take my word for it. I'm like you and just learning. Look it up on the RU-vid

You can use those grow lights any time of year. Setups can be expensive, but I use a little 4' LED hanging shop light and red solo cups. Works great

Loving the videos, but they’re a little late for us as our last frost date is tomorrow.

Perfect time to start planting summer crops like corn, tomato, peppers and such then. You can plant leafy greens and cool crops in August
