So basically the thing is- Break your figure in basic shapes and draw a light source and just see the sides of the shapes facing away from the light source and shade it

This is the only time the final step of "add deatales" has actually made sense. People really be skipping from "draw a circle" to ~add deatales~ and it's a finished masterpiece.

Does anyone have suggestions for shading without reference for people with aphantasia? Would it just be dedicated practice? I love drawing, but I have to have hundreds of references for things because I do not have an imagination/ability to visualize mentally.

Yeah, dedicated practice will definitely help. Have you studied the structure of the thing you are drawing? Knowing the structure will help construct objects without a reference. I would recommend looking at Proko's videos on structure and "how to shade a drawing." Also look at his "shading from imagination" video. I think it will be of help to you, even if you cant visualize in your mind. Have a good day!

Think of the body as a cube, we can draw cubes from every angle NOW but not in kindergarten, a little practice and the human body will be as easy to draw as a cube from various angles
