How to Start Vegetable Seeds in Milk Jug Greenhouses | It never fails!

One of the most affordable ways to eat real food is to grow it yourself! I've been gardening my whole life and fell in love with milk jug greenhouses about four years ago. It's pretty much foolproof! Keep your jugs upright, airtight (leave the lids off though) and watered and let nature do the rest. This method can be used for spring and fall gardening and it's great for sowing flowers, herbs and vegetable seeds.

I saw you talk about this on Facebook and I tried it this year. Absolutely, the BEST method I've ever done! Thank you so much, I've gotten a jump start on several plants and will be doing more soon. I used leftover seeds from last year and they are sprouting beautifully! I will say that you have to use 1/2 gallon or 1 gallon jugs, I tried small water bottles and the soil dries out too fast and the seeds that did sprout are very leggy. Thanks, Rachel!

Yes you need those larger jugs and you do still need to water them.

How do you know when to transplant them? Is there a general timeframe for all plants/flowers? I'm going to plant flowers/snapdragons. Thanks for a great video.

Check the seed packet for information on when plants are ready for transplant and that’s usually pretty accurate to how long to keep them in the jugs once they sprout. In general six weeks is fairly normal. For tomatoes I transplant them when they are growing out the top of the lid. Just make sure the plants look nice and strong and are up near the top of the jug or coming out of it and you’ll be just fine!

What time of year do you start this process? I’m in zone 7b. We have pretty mild winters but sometimes we have really cold ones… it’s not consistent.
@FeastandFarmCooks
@FeastandFarmCooks 2 года назад
I start 6 to 8 weeks before my last frost date for my zone. That's the easiest way to do it. If you are somewhere very warm you can sow year round!

Okay, so I have absolutely no windows that I can put these next to, and I'm in Northern Michigan. Will these survive outside with the absolutely hormonal weather we still get? (we just got snow 4 days ago in late April)
@FeastandFarmCooks
@FeastandFarmCooks 2 года назад
They are supposed to be outside the whole time. They'll die in a window and this process works absolutely everywhere. Once they sprout, if temps drop below freezing cover with thick blankets overnight or until it warms. If it gets really cold, putting them inside briefly is fine.

I’m in Kentucky as was wondering if this will work for an early start for green bell peppers in the beginning of February for a mid summer (hopefully) harvest?
@FeastandFarmCooks
@FeastandFarmCooks 3 года назад
Tarra those peppers! I pull it off every year but have to be okay with not harvesting until late September. You can put your jugs out early and let them get a jumpstart BUT you'll be babysitting them for months because as soon as they sprout you'll have to cover them with heavy blankets every night and/or bring them in if temps drop below freezing. If you are okay with that, go for it!

@@FeastandFarmCooks this is why I was thinking of only trying a few and then in the spring my normal amount of peppers 😂 I feel like peppers always need to be babysat but I loves them sooo much 😍😍 thanks for your response and advice. Experimenting in the garden is fun 🤩 even if we are chasing the temps to save the babies

@@thatcouplerides I hear ya. I jug sow everything because I love the method so much. I just have to be content to wait for my peppers to harvest later. Happy gardening!

That's very interesting! My husband always buys plants. I said something to him yesterday about seeds. I got a no from him. This is great information though. Thanks!

Seeds can feel like a pain to start and I understand that. I have fought with them for years to grow indoors and finally this method has changed all of that!

Should you put the lids on the milk jugs. I somehow got the idea you should. Your method looks so simple. I already have nine jugs with seeds. Waiting for seeds I ordered to do more. The jugs are all ready for their new tenants! Thanks for introducing me to this great way of giving seeds a good start. 🥰
@FeastandFarmCooks

No leave the lids off. You'll still need to water them, but the lid off let's in some water when it rains and regulates the temperature just right.

What zone and what date - crucial information that is missing in your video
@FeastandFarmCooks
@FeastandFarmCooks 4 года назад
Everyone's planting zones and dates will vary. The process used here is the same but you will need to look up when your last frost date is and your zone online. I'm 6b, Kentucky.
@stevecole6485
@stevecole6485 3 года назад
It doesn’t matter what zone. If you’ve done a garden before, then you know when your last frost is relative to your climate. Jug the seeds so they have time to grow, not sticking out the top of the jug until the winter frost is over. About 3-4 weeks before your last frost. (My last frost is somewhere around Feb-14-Valentine’s Day, so I can start jugging the seeds around mid-late January) that’s the point of early sowing in jugs-frost protection, head start

Can you use white milk jugs or do they have to be frosted? Just curious.
@FeastandFarmCooks
@FeastandFarmCooks 4 года назад
Solid white won't work they just block too much light. You need "regular" ones or two liter bottles or water jugs.

Where do you place these outside. like in a full sun area?
@FeastandFarmCooks
@FeastandFarmCooks 3 года назад
For the most part yes, full sun. Unless it's super hot (80 degrees plus. Since the jugs are greenhouses it's much hotter inside.) Move to the shade if it's hotter than that.

So you don't use the lid? How about using the lid and poking a few holes around the sides?
@FeastandFarmCooks
@FeastandFarmCooks 4 года назад
No the lid isn't needed because we need rain to come in the tops. And no holes around the sides because it defeats the purpose of making a greenhouse effect. You certainly want them in the bottom for drainage, but no where else.

Why not use seed starting mix?
@FeastandFarmCooks
@FeastandFarmCooks 3 года назад
Seed starting mix is too light and doesn't contain the nutrients needed for strong plants. Because the plants live in the jugs right up until transplant they need solid nutrition and seed starting mixes fail miserably.
@Kikyostanlol
@Kikyostanlol 2 года назад
Is there a reason you can’t use seed starting mix?
@FeastandFarmCooks
@FeastandFarmCooks 2 года назад
Hey Ren--yep they are mostly perlite and very fine and powdery. They simply don't have the nutrition necessary for your plants to grow strong until they transplant. Since they stay in the jugs for 8 weeks or longer, they need more than what a seed starting mix can offer.

@FeastandFarmCooks
@FeastandFarmCooks 3 года назад
Did you use top of the line potting soil? Did you plant the seeds very shallowly? Did you seal the cut totally so they created condensation? Did you water as needed? And did you leave them outside from start to finish? It's easy to over think the process and end up doing something that stops the process. I'll be happy to help you trouble shoot if needed.
