Turning on my camera actually distracts me because I start worrying about how I look and I'm uncomfortable with others seeing me, but with a turned off camera I can be more comfortable, therefore I can pay attention better.
@@yasminhando theres been femicides in certain countries, like mexico, where women are killed/beaten/etc. Even before the femicides some women in some third world countries just have little to no rights or protections.
@@Daniel-oj4zx well yeah it's hard for us to feel safe in public spaces, and being constantly worried that someone might assault you is not ideal for studying... also I wouldn't even think of bringing a laptop/ipad to like,, a park
(for future reference) 1. Find a fidget activity 2. Attend live lectures 3. Turn your camera on (social accountability) 4. Participate in class 5. Watch recordings on a different speed 6. Make a designated study space 7. Take a walk before classes 8. Study outdoors 9. Go in full screen mode 10. Create distance from distractions 11. Take notes on paper 12. Use apps to block distracting sites
Honestly I may start crocheting while doing online classes because this way I can pay attention because I have a replacement stimulant . It takes all my energy just to focus and keep up with what’s going on . I need something to keep me engaged , lol
Me, living in Russia, Moscow - nothing interesting, today we can wear a tshirt with jeans. Actually, Russians are warm, like, really warm. We can wear no jacket at -10c

For taking notes on paper, I'm a perfectionist and my notes NEED to look perfect but I noticed that I can't plan my notes when the lectures are going at normal paces. What I've started doing is taking sloppy quick, gross looking notes DURING the lectures/pre-recorded sessions and once they're over and done with I take them and transfer them to a notebook where I write down the necessary things, decide what material was written under impulse and what material helps me better understand the lesson. This works really well and I am able to work smarter and just a little bit harder to make sure I'm really getting that material down. Editing my comment to clarify: When I say my notes need to be PERFECT I should have worded it differently because my definition of perfect is different from your definition. I don't have hours to spend writing my notes again and again in cute "aesthetic" notebooks and all that. I basically just wrote them over so it's at least legible (Because my in class notes are barely able to be read by even me) and I just organize them by material/content😌✨
@@sawaxbasket Personally, when they go off topic it reminds me the point, time, and examples they went over. Typing it down helps me remember the lecture and material. Personal opinion ofc.
i'm watching this before class, and honestly, I'm now happy that I'm going to be able to put some of these to use this morning! And i agree that a fidget activity is so helpful, I usually draw mindlessly on an index card, and it really helps me stay focused. Thank you so much
just a tip: its great that you've found something to help, but maybe you can draw on a whiteboard instead if possible so its more environmentally friendly
@@kianaamarnani3 oh thank you!! I honestly never thought of the paper that I was wasting by doing that. And I do have a whiteboard and a few whiteboard pens at my desk. Thank you so so much for the extremley helpfull suggestion!
You're so lucky you have an option of prerecorded lectures, because in my school you only have the option of live classes and if you miss it you miss it. But I think that's better coz the teacher can actually interact with you and make sure that you're actually paying attention
My course is almost the exact opposite, almost all of my lectures are pre-recorded and I hardly have any live sessions :( I think a mix of both is the best -- you can watch the recording back later, but you get to ask questions and interact with the lecturer real-time if you attend the lectures.
@@Sarah-oy2lr i have a mix of both, bc if somebody is in the hospital they can watch back, and still keep up, or if u miss something u can always go back
meanwhile if i text a teacher "i can't join" he completely decides to ignore that. I end up being told to read out the homework that i clearly didn't do because i didn't know it existed. Like it would be nice to at least say "do this." through priv chat. Like bruh.
As for the fidgeting activity, I've started making those tiny origami stars in lessons and then I use them as a reward for completing a piece of schoolwork and throw them in a jar. Has been working for three months so far, highly recommended!
To be honest interaction with your teacher is really helpful because if someday she compliments you you're like ohh I'm gonna do this again to get a compliment and Woah you've started to pay attention 👍🤗
In my classes in person, I was known as the "live artist" type of note-taker. All the lecturers not only had no problem with it, quite a few mentioned the studies of doing art as a memorisation technique and encouraged me to keep going. I used to draw the lecturer, other students, the desks - it became quite a great collection of the class experience that week. I would have a drawing of the lecturer's outfit that day, a quote or two that were memorable, a student paying attention, another fidgeting. To this day, I can go back to those drawings and remember exactly what the class topic was about, what was discussed, the questions and answers students had, everything. I really miss it being online. My last drawing was of the inside of a lecturers nose.
It always confuses me when some of my classmates ask how to focus when they have multiple tabs, texting our gc during class, going through social media and watching videos. Like dude idk about you but maybe closing all those tabs would benefit you
@@nantae1047 mane that sucks :( the teachers at my school would record the lessons sometimes but i dont think they ever had a policy that said students werent allowed to record.
Hey, just wanted you to know that you're one of the real, helpful studytubers out there. Your videos are never useless or redundant, and I can always learn something new. You're gonna go miles ahead of your contemporaries because of the amazing quality of your content.
mood like,, today one of our teachers told us that we have to go to school to get our final grades and I literally tried to have my mom go before work but she can't so I'll have to😭😭
I found that leaving the camera on is the best thing to do. A lot of teachers were so grateful and you just feel more put together and reminded to actually listen.
Jasmine: "I'd be very surprised if you could listen and understand everything at 2x speed" Me: * Immediately puts video to 1.75x and realizes that she was right *
Do what you feel comfortable because you have paid fees for you not for others, main thing is to learn and grow and this won't be possible if you won't listen to your soul and your body.
I did, in fact watch this at 2x speed and understood everything. I'm the type of person who can not stand being slow, always talks at a fast pace and I often have to repeat myself cuz others can't keep up. 😂😂😂
another tip i've discovered (that might be intuitive) is that i separate my school work and "distractions" to different windows/browsers. associating chrome to just school work, or even the separate window, helps minimise distractions a lot. and since I'm the kind of guy who keeps tabs open all the time, this has helped me a lot.
Something that has helped me A LOT with my online class is making a study group through Facebook! We meet a couple times a week to go over lectures, homework, and we make study guides with each other. I think a huge thing thats missing from online classes is the community you make with total strangers.
My music teacher gave us a bit of play dough in the beginning of the year to visualize how to break down notes, so I've always kept it near my desk. It's become like a stress ball to me, and I play with it in every class while I'm listening to a lecture, and it's really helped!
the first tip of getting a fidget activity not only was a perfect solution for me to finally be able to focus and listen more to my lectures (/not get distracted to the point of zoning out entirely thanks to a phone) but also was the final push i needed to remind myself of knitting and crocheting again which i was thinking about for weeks before watching but never took the time to do so this video was the perfect push i needed!! so thank you studyquill for not only helping with classes but also helping me sort of rediscover a really fun and relaxing activity (activities) :]
Ugh, anyway this is ur sign to be positive about ur looks (bc i have seen yall say that yall have anxiety about but keep going! Keep pushing and you'll finish school!).
WAIT I THOUGHT I WAS THE ONLY ONE WHO CROCHETED JUST TO HELP ME FOCUS DURING CLASS I ALWAYS FELT SO GUILTY BECAUSE I FELT LIKE I WAS NOT ACTUALLY PAYING ATTENTION BUT I FOUND THAT IT REALLY HELPS ME :O no really I really recommend this tip! its been super helpful for me!
These tips were great and will absolutely be helpful, but for me the part that helped the most was when you said that you will probably graduate college over zoom. That made me realize I’ve been treating online school as a temporary thing and not really putting my full effort into it. This statement showed me that I should invest in my own success more because it probably won’t go away anytime soon. So, thank you!
Great advice. Thanks Jasmine! Studying in an online environment can be hard at times, but if you pay attention, you’ll find that it’s really enjoyable. It makes you more independent as a learner.
I cannot stress enough how much keeping my camera on and participating in class has helped me over the past 10ish months! It's been the best way to stay engaged and focused (in my experience).
As a college educator myself, I love your ideas, and guess what, I am posting them to my students!! Yay! Thank you specially for turning camera on! That is so helpful
her: you’re probably even watching this at 2x speed me: *feeling personally attacked that she knew im watching this at 2x speed* her: although i would be impressed if you’re still grasping the information me: BEEG BRAIN >:)))
these tips helped me ALOT, the comments and studyquill has helped me improve in school and helped me focus. Im very grateful that this channel has gotten into my recommendations.
Jasmine can I just say, you had a really nice glow up like not only in your looks but also in your confidence and like... the way you talk and stuff it's really cool to have watched your videos for years haha and to see this positive change ✨✨🥰
This was REALLY helpful!! And I LOVE your hair! iT's So PrEtTy!! Btw, I have a tip that could help u remember more about tasks and deadlines, which isn't really related to the topic, but...it helped me, so I hope it could help anyone who's reading this comment too:) So for Laptop users, you can create a sticky note (in the Stickies app in MacBooks or any other sticky notes app ), and maybe colour-code them accordingly (like separate colours for Deadlines, goals, tasks, etc) and keep it on your desktop. So every time u open your device, u would see them, especially when and IF you're like me and u forget to open your bujo/planner, this is actually really helpful, when you are doing online schooling! If u think that this won’t work, then just totally ignore my comment :)
Whenever I find myself having a hard time with starting my schoolwork, I just go here. I usually just watch a whole video then bam!- I'm doing my work now. tysm!
as much as being the ONLY PERSON in your class with the camera on is AWKWARD!!!! It has helped me so much and the professors just know that you're listening
Another tip is reward yourself for doing all of that and getting through so you can tell yourself if you get through the lecture and take all your noted no distractions you can get a reward
I clicked on this video out of guilt because I was scrolling youtube while procrastinating schoolwork, and this is the video I *needed* to see! Thank you so much for sharing these tips, I definitely have some new ideas to keep myself more focused
When talking about study space, having a specific lamp, maybe a special hue will also set your mind on that focus mode. And the specific music you play will also help focus - I personally enjoy the HP Common Room Music.
I'm definitely going to try all your tips while taking my online course. That crochet thing was just amazing....Your best points were watching recordings at a different speed and go full screen to avoid distractions...Thanks a lot!
I put my phone in 'do not disturb' mode for an hour or two. Also, a tip you might not have thought of is taking breaks. Give your mind a few minutes (15-20) to just recalibrate. Thanks for the video!
I actually changed the speed of the video to 1.5 because I was squeezing this in-between my classes and when you imitated how older professors talk I had to check if I changed the speed...
